New Terminator Movie: Status, Release Date and Cast

No new Terminator movie has been announced: no studio has greenlit a seventh film, and none has a director, cast, title or release date. A studio announcement would come first, and none has been made.

The most recent film is Terminator: Dark Fate (2019), directed by Tim Miller. Fans search for the seventh film as "Terminator 7", but that is a search name and not a title.

The one sourced fact is a statement from the director of the first two films. In December 2025, James Cameron said he is working on a new Terminator, without Arnold Schwarzenegger, and gave no timeline (The A.V. Club). No studio, Paramount Pictures included, has announced the project.

His comment is short. In December 2025 he told The A.V. Club that he is working on it and that it is time for a new generation of characters, and he gave no timeline. No writer, director, studio, cast, title or release date has been confirmed, and no trade update from 2026 has appeared. A studio announcement would come first, and none has been made.

How the last films set expectations. Cameron directed The Terminator (1984, $6.4 million budget) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991, $102 million budget). Every film since has had a different director: Jonathan Mostow on Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, McG on Terminator Salvation, Alan Taylor on Terminator Genisys and Tim Miller on Terminator: Dark Fate. Cameron's return as an active writer is therefore the first involvement of that kind since Terminator 2, though whether he would direct is not known.

The box office record. Terminator: Dark Fate grossed $261 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, on a $185 million budget. Terminator Genisys made about $440 million worldwide on $155 million, Terminator 3 about $433 million on $200 million, and Terminator Salvation about $371 million on $200 million. Dark Fate had the lowest worldwide gross of the four and the lowest domestic total of any film after Terminator 3. That context is a matter of record, but no source ties it to any decision about a seventh film.

The Sarah Connor question. Dark Fate reunited Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger on screen for the first time in 28 years, as Fox News noted in its report on the Madrid shoot that stood in for Mexico City. With Schwarzenegger ruled out by Cameron, one of that film's two leads is not part of the plan as reported.

Television. Terminator Zero, the Netflix anime, was cancelled after one season, per Variety in February 2026. Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger were credited as executive producers on it, but the report says nothing about a film.
