What Are the Monsterverse Movies?

The Monsterverse is a shared film universe in which Godzilla, Kong and other giant creatures called Titans exist in one continuity, and it currently has five films. All five are main saga entries, so the franchise has five films and no theatrical spin-offs. A live action series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, shares the same continuity and gets its own paragraph further down. The first film, Godzilla (2014), directed by Gareth Edwards, reached US theaters on May 16, 2014, and the most recent, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), directed by Adam Wingard, followed on March 29, 2024. If you want the exact count and the reasoning behind it, the page on how many Monsterverse movies are there covers it.

Monarch, the secretive organization that studies Titans, is the thread that holds the Monsterverse together. In Kong: Skull Island (2017), directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, a Monarch man named Bill Randa persuades the government to fund a survey of a newly found island in 1973. By Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), directed by Michael Dougherty, the Titans have been known to the world for five years, and Monarch scientists are tracking a newly hatched Mothra. In Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), also directed by Wingard, Kong lives under Monarch's watch inside a large dome on Skull Island. A Titan veterinarian called Trapper turns up in The New Empire, which tells you how normal the job market for monster work has become.

The full Monsterverse movies list, in release order, looks like this (the composers get more room on the Monsterverse soundtrack page):

  • Godzilla (2014), directed by Gareth Edwards, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche and Bryan Cranston. The runtime is 123 minutes and the score is by Alexandre Desplat.
  • Kong: Skull Island (2017), directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, with Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman and Brie Larson. The runtime is 118 minutes and the score is by Henry Jackman.
  • Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), directed by Michael Dougherty, with Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown and Ken Watanabe. The runtime is 132 minutes and the score is by Bear McCreary.
  • Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), directed by Adam Wingard, with Alexander Skarsgård, Rebecca Hall, Kaylee Hottle and Brian Tyree Henry, while Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler return from King of the Monsters. The runtime is 114 minutes and the score is by Tom Holkenborg.
  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), directed by Adam Wingard, with Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens and Kaylee Hottle. The runtime is 115 minutes and the score is by Tom Holkenborg.

The Monsterverse films used different methods to create their Titans, from inflatable greenscreens in Godzilla (2014) to motion capture in Kong: Skull Island. According to American Cinematographer, Godzilla (2014) shot in Vancouver and Oahu and never had a physically built Godzilla. Kong in Skull Island is credited to motion capture services from Toby Kebbell and Terry Notary. In King of the Monsters, a sound device called the Orca drives the plot, because it can calm a Titan such as Mothra and so makes whoever holds it dangerous. Godzilla vs. Kong filmed on Oahu and at Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland, according to Star Advertiser and Ausfilm.

The highest grosser of the five Monsterverse films is The New Empire at $572 million worldwide, with Kong: Skull Island close behind at $569 million. Budgets run from $135 million for The New Empire to $185 million for Skull Island, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters sits in between at $170 million. The Monsterverse box office page lays out every film.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is the Monsterverse live action series on Apple TV+ (branded Apple TV from 2025), created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction. Season 1 premiered on November 17, 2023 with 10 episodes, and season 2 ran from February 27 to May 1, 2026, also with 10 episodes. Toho, which owns Godzilla, licensed the character to Legendary Entertainment for the show, and John Goodman appears as the older Bill Randa, tying it to Skull Island. Apple has not formally renewed Monarch: Legacy of Monsters for a third season as of October 29, 2026, though TVLine reported talks were under way. The Monarch: Legacy of Monsters page tracks it, and the Monsterverse timeline shows where the series sits against the films.

Monsterverse Movies in Order

The Monsterverse movies can be watched in release order or in chronological order, and the two lists differ only in the first two films. Release order is Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024).

Chronological order swaps the first pair, so Kong: Skull Island comes first and Godzilla (2014) second, and the other three stay where they are. The reason is the calendar inside the stories. Skull Island opens in 1944 with two pilots crashing on a South Pacific island, and its main expedition happens in 1973. Godzilla (2014) begins in 1999 with a disaster at the Janjira nuclear plant in Japan, then jumps fifteen years ahead. Kong: Skull Island is therefore the earlier story, even though it arrived three years later in theaters.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is not a numbered film, so it appears in the watch order as a context line. Season 1 takes place in the aftermath of the San Francisco battle from Godzilla (2014), with scenes in the 1950s, so it slots in right after that film in chronological order. Season 2 is set in 2017, with flashbacks to the 1950s, 1960s and 1982, which makes it the later of the two seasons.

The full guide, with a line of context for every film, is on Monsterverse movies in order.

What Is the Next Monsterverse Movie?

The next Monsterverse movie is Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, set for release in US theaters on March 26, 2027. Warner Bros. is distributing, the film is directed by Grant Sputore and written by Dave Callaham, and Toho distributes in Japan.

Variety reported on May 9, 2025 that the sequel had been titled Supernova as it began production for the March 26, 2027 date, and the studio page from Legendary Entertainment lists the same day. The date has not moved since it was set in June 2024. Filming wrapped in 2025 and the film is in post production. No UK or Australian release date has been found yet, so those markets stay unlisted until a studio or distributor announces one.

No new Monsterverse film is dated for 2026. The most recent film is still The New Empire from March 2024, and the one live action release of 2026 in this universe was season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which ran from February 27 to May 1.

Cast, rumors with their sources and the full list of date changes are tracked on Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, and the video side is on the Godzilla x Kong: Supernova trailer page.
