What Are the Fast and Furious Movies?

The Fast and Furious movies are a Universal action franchise of 10 main films and 1 spin-off, released from 2001 to 2023, about street racers, thieves and agents who grow from Los Angeles car culture into a global ensemble. The series opens with The Fast and the Furious (2001), directed by Rob Cohen, in which undercover cop Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) works his way into the circle of racer Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel). Later films add heists, international locations and a widening family of allies and rivals.

2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) was directed by John Singleton. Justin Lin then directed The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five (2011) and Fast & Furious 6 (2013), and returned for F9 (2021). James Wan directed Furious 7 (2015), F. Gary Gray directed The Fate of the Furious (2017), and Louis Leterrier directed Fast X (2023). Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019), directed by David Leitch, is the one spin-off.

Two short films, The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious and Los Bandoleros, fill story gaps but are not counted as features. For the full list with release dates, see our how many Fast and Furious movies are there page.

The budgets show how the scale changed. The Fast and the Furious cost $38 million and grossed $213 million worldwide, and 2 Fast 2 Furious carried a $76 million budget. Fast Five raised that to $125 million, grossed $644 million worldwide, and built its plot around a heist on a moving train in Rio de Janeiro, with Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) arriving as the agent hunting Dom and Brian. Furious 7 grossed $1.5 billion worldwide on a $190 million budget, the highest gross in the series. Fast X had the largest budget at $340 million, according to The Numbers.

The first film is based on the Vibe article Racer X by Kenneth Li, according to History.com. Its story stays small: a truck hijacking ring, an L.A. street racing scene and a cop whose loyalties split. Compare The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, which swaps the core crew for a new lead, Sean Boswell (Lucas Black), and grossed $157.8 million worldwide, the lowest of the main films. It still matters, because it introduces Han Lue (Sung Kang). Fast & Furious (2009) used the same $85 million budget as Tokyo Drift and grossed $360 million by reuniting Dom, Brian, Letty and Mia.

Some production details are on record too. Fast Five's Rio scenes were shot in Puerto Rico before production moved to Atlanta, according to Omelete. Fast & Furious 6 reached UK screens on May 17, 2013, a week before its US release on May 24, and TheWrap reported its worldwide premiere in London.

What Is the Order of the Fast and Furious Movies?

The Fast and the Furious movies in release order run from The Fast and the Furious (2001) to Fast X (2023), with Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) in ninth place. Our Fast and Furious movies in order page explains both lists in more detail, and both are printed in full below.

Release order:

  1. The Fast and the Furious (2001)
  2. 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
  3. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
  4. Fast & Furious (2009)
  5. Fast Five (2011)
  6. Fast & Furious 6 (2013)
  7. Furious 7 (2015)
  8. The Fate of the Furious (2017)
  9. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
  10. F9 (2021)
  11. Fast X (2023)

Chronological order:

  1. The Fast and the Furious (2001)
  2. 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
  3. Fast & Furious (2009)
  4. Fast Five (2011)
  5. Fast & Furious 6 (2013)
  6. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
  7. Furious 7 (2015)
  8. The Fate of the Furious (2017)
  9. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
  10. F9 (2021)
  11. Fast X (2023)

The difference that matters is Tokyo Drift, which moves from third to sixth, after Fast & Furious 6 and before Furious 7. The spin-off is ninth in both lists, and F9 and Fast X stay tenth and eleventh. The short films slot in as context lines, with The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious after the first film and Los Bandoleros after 2 Fast 2 Furious.

The reason for the Tokyo Drift move is that its Han Lue story sits late in the timeline, so the chronological list places it just before Furious 7, where Deckard Shaw's revenge reaches Tokyo. The shorts do real setup work: Los Bandoleros, written and directed by Vin Diesel and running about 20 minutes, plans the gasoline tanker hijacking that opens Fast & Furious, and The Turbo Charged Prelude follows Brian O'Conner leaving Los Angeles and racing his way east before 2 Fast 2 Furious starts in Miami.

What Is the Next Fast and Furious Movie?

Fast Forever is the next Fast and Furious movie, and Universal has set its release for Friday, March 17, 2028. Variety and TheWrap both reported the date on January 30, 2026. The film was known earlier as Fast X: Part 2, and its date has moved from April 2027. Its status is announced, and cameras are not yet rolling.

The confirmed production word comes from the star. Vin Diesel told Variety Australia on August 18, 2026 that shooting starts in December 2026. No director has been officially named, and TheWrap's report on the dating named none either. That matters because Fast X, the last film, was directed by Louis Leterrier and carried a $340 million budget, so the next installment follows the most expensive entry in the series.

A separate report is a rumor. The Insneider, relayed by Film Stories on October 8, 2026, claimed there is no finished script, that Leterrier is no longer directing, and that filming may not start until early 2028. None of it is confirmed. The March 17, 2028 date is the studio's official date; the production reports remain unconfirmed.

Dates, status and sources are tracked on our Fast Forever page.

Who Are the Main Characters in Fast and Furious?

Fast and Furious characters

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker), Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez) and Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) are the central characters of Fast and Furious, and all four debut in The Fast and the Furious (2001). Dom runs the crew, Brian arrives as an undercover cop, Mia is Dom's sister, and Letty is a member of the crew. Our Fast and Furious characters page covers all of them.

The cast grows by debut film. 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) adds Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson), Brian's childhood friend, and Tej Parker (Ludacris). Han Lue (Sung Kang) first turns up in the short Los Bandoleros and then in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006). Fast & Furious (2009) brings in Gisele Yashar (Gal Gadot), and Fast Five (2011) brings in Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), the federal agent sent after Dom and Brian. Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) debuts in Furious 7 (2015).

The villains change with each era: Cipher (Charlize Theron) in The Fate of the Furious (2017), Jakob Toretto (John Cena) in F9 (2021), and Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) in Fast X (2023). Jakob and Dante both tie back to Dom's family, which is a different design from the early films, where the threat is a hijacking ring or a drug lord.

Profiles: Dominic Toretto, Brian O'Conner, Letty Ortiz, Mia Toretto, Roman Pearce, Tej Parker, Han Lue, Luke Hobbs, Deckard Shaw, Gisele Yashar, Cipher, Dante Reyes and Jakob Toretto.
