James Bond Movies: What the Series Is and How Many Films There Are
The James Bond franchise has 27 films: 25 official EON Productions films and 2 non EON films. It is a spy series built around MI6 agent James Bond, the saga opens with Dr. No (1962), directed by Terence Young, and the latest entry is No Time to Die (2021), directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga.
Six actors have played Bond in the official series. Sean Connery made six EON films from Dr. No to Diamonds Are Forever, George Lazenby made one with On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Roger Moore made seven from Live and Let Die to A View to a Kill, Timothy Dalton made two, Pierce Brosnan made four from GoldenEye to Die Another Day, and Daniel Craig made five from Casino Royale (2006), directed by Martin Campbell, to No Time to Die. Connery also led Never Say Never Again, which sits outside the EON run.
The two non EON films are separate from the official series. Casino Royale (1967) was made as a spoof by producer Charles K. Feldman, who owned the rights to Ian Fleming's novel, and it uses five credited directors. Never Say Never Again (1983), directed by Irvin Kershner, was made independently by Jack Schwartzman's Taliafilm, with Kevin McClory as executive producer, as a retelling of the Thunderball story.
The series also has a long record of practical stunts. Thunderball won the Oscar for Special Visual Effects at the 38th Academy Awards on 18 April 1966, with John Stears credited. The Man with the Golden Gun staged the first astro spiral stunt on film, according to Guinness World Records, using an AMC Hornet X. Spectre set a record for the biggest stunt explosion, filmed in Erfoud.
The music is just as recognizable. Dr. No carries the James Bond Theme, performed by the John Barry Orchestra and composed by Monty Norman. Shirley Bassey sang the title song for Goldfinger, and Adele won the Oscar for Best Original Song for Skyfall on 24 February 2013, the first Bond theme to take that award. The James Bond theme songs page covers the title tracks, and the James Bond soundtrack page covers the composers.
The money has grown with the budgets. Dr. No cost about $1 million and grossed $59.6 million worldwide, while No Time to Die cost $250 million and grossed $759 million. The biggest earner is Skyfall (2012), directed by Sam Mendes, which took $1.11 billion worldwide on a $200 million budget. The James Bond box office page has the figures film by film, and the James Bond movies ranked page covers our opinions. Cast and crew sit on the James Bond cast page, and the full list of Bond films holds the count and the film grid.

James Bond Movies List: Release Order and Watch Order
The James Bond movies in order are the 25 EON films from Dr. No (1962) to No Time to Die (2021), followed by the two non EON films, Casino Royale (1967) and Never Say Never Again (1983). Next James Bond Movie: Who Is Replacing Daniel Craig?
No actor has been announced as the next James Bond: Bond 26 is untitled, in development, and has no release date. Denis Villeneuve is directing, which was announced in June 2025, Steven Knight is writing, and Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing. Nina Gold is reportedly the casting director: Variety first reported her hiring, and the studio statement did not confirm it. The full status is on the next James Bond movie page, and the Bond 26 trailer page will carry any footage once it exists.
The studio confirmed on 14 May 2026 that the search for the next James Bond was underway. On 12 September 2026, Steven Knight said the first draft of the screenplay was finished, as reported by Variety. Amy Pascal has indicated that the film will shoot in the UK, according to Screen Daily in March 2026.
The casting reports are rumors, and they are labeled that way. TheWrap reported on 22 October 2026, citing insiders, that Jack Lowden, Callum Turner and Josh O'Connor were among four actors in the final screen tests, which were reported to begin around 23 October 2026 in London. No outcome has been reported since that date passed. The same report said Jacob Elordi was no longer in the running. Amazon MGM declined to comment, and RTE noted that the studio has confirmed none of the names. Separately, Variety's September article on Knight's script mentions Gary Oldman saying the choice has already been made and that he hopes it is Jack Lowden. That remark is unconfirmed.
Claims that any actor has already been cast remain unconfirmed, and no studio source has given a shoot or release date.

James Bond charactersThe main James Bond characters are Bond himself, his MI6 colleagues M, Q (the quartermaster) and Miss Moneypenny, his CIA ally Felix Leiter, and a rotating set of villains, among them Ernst Stavro Blofeld. M is played by Bernard Lee in the early films, Robert Brown from Octopussy to Licence to Kill, Judi Dench from GoldenEye to Skyfall, and Ralph Fiennes in Spectre and No Time to Die. Desmond Llewelyn played Q for 17 appearances before his death on 19 December 1999, John Cleese played R and then Q, and Ben Whishaw took over in Skyfall.
