Mothra MonsterVerse: Who She Is and What Happens to Her

Mothra is a giant winged Titan in the MonsterVerse who hatches as a larva in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and acts as an ally to humans, Godzilla and Kong. She is first seen as cave painting imagery in Kong: Skull Island (2017), directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and first alive on screen in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), directed by Michael Dougherty. In the Kong: Skull Island post credit scene, Monarch shows Conrad and Weaver classified footage of cave paintings that include Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah.

She belongs to the shared universe of Godzilla and Kong films from Legendary Pictures, the same series that pits Godzilla against Kong, the giant ape of Skull Island, and later against the machine Mechagodzilla.

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, scientist Emma Russell and her daughter Madison watch a Mothra larva hatch at a remote Monarch outpost, and Emma calms it with the Orca, a device that can communicate with Titans. The larva then escapes and builds a cocoon. She is shown first as a larva, then in a cocoon, then as the winged Titan.

She returns in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), directed by Adam Wingard, where she is worshipped by the Iwi. If you are new to the series, those two films are the ones that matter most for her, and the Skull Island scene is a short but useful hint of what was coming.

Mothra's story runs from a larva hatching and a sacrificial death in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) to a return that calms Godzilla in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). In the first film, mercenaries led by Alan Jonah raid the Monarch base, kidnap Emma and Madison, and leave the larva to escape and spin her cocoon. Later, with King Ghidorah rampaging through Boston, Mothra defeats Rodan and joins the fight beside Godzilla in the city.

The turning point is her sacrifice. Mothra gives up her life to pass her energy to Godzilla, which lets him unleash a stronger blast and kill King Ghidorah. Ishiro Serizawa has already given his life in the same film by setting off a nuclear device that restores Godzilla's strength, so Mothra's sacrifice is the second one that the final fight depends on. The film closes with Titans spreading across the planet and hints of a possible second Mothra egg.

Between those two films comes Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). Mothra is not one of the Titans in its plot, which centers on Kong, Godzilla and Mechagodzilla, a giant machine piloted through a link to the severed head of King Ghidorah. Kong destroys Mechagodzilla with an axe that Godzilla powers up with his atomic breath.

In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Monarch detects a signal that turns out to be a distress call from the Iwi. Monarch scientist Ilene Andrews, Jia, the podcaster Bernie Hayes and the Titan veterinarian Trapper travel to investigate. Jia awakens Mothra, who is worshipped by the Iwi, and Mothra arrives when Godzilla, soaking up radiation, has a short fight with Kong. She calms Godzilla, and the three Titans go to Hollow Earth to face the forces of the Skar King. TheWrap reports Mothra was removed from the film's marketing.

Yes, Mothra is friendly toward Godzilla, Kong and the humans who protect her, and she is Godzilla's ally, not his wife. What the films show is an alliance. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) she hands her energy to Godzilla, and in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) she steps in to calm him after his short fight with Kong. That answers why Godzilla and Mothra are together on screen: they are on the same side against King Ghidorah and, later, the Skar King.

Her link to Kong is also one of alliance. In The New Empire the three Titans go to Hollow Earth together to face the Skar King's forces. Kong and Godzilla have fought each other before, in Godzilla vs. Kong, where they part ways after Mechagodzilla is destroyed. In The New Empire, Mothra is the one who ends their short fight.

Her human bonds matter just as much. Emma Russell calms the larva with the Orca, and Madison Russell and her father Mark Russell are caught up in the same crisis. In The New Empire, Jia is the one who awakens her, the Iwi worship her, and Jia decides to stay with the Iwi at the end of the film.

Mothra fights Rodan and King Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The films never give her the title Queen of the Monsters, since that title does not appear for her, and they never show a baby for her and Godzilla.

Yes, a Mothra is alive as of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), though the Mothra of Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) dies after giving Godzilla her energy. In the 2019 film she sacrifices herself so that Godzilla can unleash the blast that destroys Ghidorah, while the surviving Titans, Rodan among them, bow to Godzilla.

In The New Empire she is active again. After the Skar King and Shimo are beaten, Godzilla melts the ice with his atomic breath and goes back to rest in the Colosseum in Rome, and Jia decides to stay with the Iwi. Mothra then restores the barrier that protects them. The films do not say whether this is the same individual or a new one, though the 2019 ending hinted at a possible second egg, which is the closest thing to an explanation.

Legendary lists Godzilla x Kong: Supernova for March 26, 2027 with Warner Bros. distributing, and Toho distributes it in Japan. Whether Mothra appears in it has not been confirmed, so any further appearance remains an open question. For the wider cast of creatures, see MonsterVerse Titans.

My pick for Mothra's best moment is the larva hatching in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), calmed by Emma Russell with the Orca. It works because the creature is small before it is large, and it sets the rule that sound can steer a Titan. In my opinion, that quiet opening scene is stronger than the loud battles that follow it.

My second pick is her sacrifice. Handing her energy to Godzilla is the film's clearest statement that the Titans can act as allies, and it gives Godzilla's final blast a cost, much like a team captain taking the hit so the striker can score.

Third is the calming of Godzilla in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). The scene shows what the franchise can do when a Titan solves a problem without a fight, and I would like to see a fuller look at her in a future film. All three are matters of taste, so if you prefer the big set pieces, the Boston battle is the place to start.
