Monsterverse Characters: The Titans and the HumansSpoilers

The main figures of the Monsterverse are the Titans, the giant creatures led by Godzilla and Kong, and the humans who study, hunt or befriend them, most tied to the organization Monarch. The five films are Godzilla (2014), directed by Gareth Edwards, Kong: Skull Island, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, directed by Michael Dougherty, and Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, both directed by Adam Wingard. Deaths and endings come up throughout, so the whole overview is spoiler territory. For the bigger picture first, start with the Monsterverse movies hub and the Monsterverse movies in order guide.

Who Are the Monsterverse Monsters and Titans?

The main monsters are the Titans Godzilla, Kong, Mothra, King Ghidorah and Rodan, plus the machine Mechagodzilla. Villains and lesser creatures such as the MUTOs, the Skullcrawlers, the Skar King and Shimo round out the list, and the biggest names have their own pages.

  • Godzilla: an ancient predator that Monarch's Dr. Ishiro Serizawa and Dr. Vivienne Graham explain to Ford Brody in Godzilla (2014), and the Titan the others bow to as king in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. See Godzilla.
  • Kong: the giant ape who guards Skull Island from the Skullcrawlers in Kong: Skull Island, later moves to Hollow Earth and becomes the leader of his tribe in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. See Kong.
  • Mothra: hatches as a larva in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, gives up her life to pass energy to Godzilla, and is worshipped by the Iwi in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. See Mothra.
  • King Ghidorah: the three-headed Titan Monarch first knew as Monster Zero, freed in Antarctica by Emma Russell in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. See King Ghidorah.
  • Rodan: one of the Titans Emma releases in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, beaten by Monster Zero and by Mothra, and later one of the Titans that bows to Godzilla.
  • Mechagodzilla: a giant machine built by Apex Cybernetics in Godzilla vs. Kong and piloted through a link to the severed head of King Ghidorah. See Mechagodzilla.
  • The MUTOs: a winged male and a larger female, the natural prey of Godzilla, who wreck Hawaii, Las Vegas and San Francisco in Godzilla (2014).
  • The Skullcrawlers: the savage reptilian creatures of Kong: Skull Island, including the giant one that rises from the lake.
  • Skar King: the tyrannical ruler of a hidden tribe of apes in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, who uses a crystal to force Shimo to obey him. See Skar King.
  • Shimo: the ice-breathing Titan under the Skar King's control in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, whose power starts a new ice age in Rio de Janeiro. See Shimo.

Suko, a young ape in the hidden tribe, is a character rather than a Titan. In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire he destroys the control crystal with Kong's axe. For the wider Titan roster, see the Monsterverse Titans guide.

Who Are the Main Human Characters?

The main humans are the Monarch scientists and the families caught up in the Titan fights, and several of them carry across more than one film. Actor names follow the TMDB credits.

  • Dr. Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe): the Monarch scientist who appears in Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and who gives his life in the second one. See Dr. Ishiro Serizawa.

  • Elle Brody (Elizabeth Olsen): Ford's wife in Godzilla (2014), waiting in the city with their son Sam.
  • Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston): Ford's father in Godzilla (2014), an engineer obsessed with finding the real cause of the Janjira disaster.
  • Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler): Emma's ex-husband in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, who blames Godzilla for the death of their son and is recruited by Monarch. See Mark Russell.

  • Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall): the Monarch scientist who follows Kong into Hollow Earth in Godzilla vs. Kong and returns in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. She is not the same person as Dr. Ilene Chen (Zhang Ziyi), a different scientist in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. See Dr. Ilene Andrews.
  • Jia (Kaylee Hottle): the deaf orphan who communicates with Kong through sign language in Godzilla vs. Kong and is the last known member of the Iwi tribe in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. See Jia.
  • Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry): the podcaster who investigates Apex in Godzilla vs. Kong and joins the Hollow Earth trip in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. See Bernie Hayes.
  • Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård): the Hollow Earth theorist Apex hires in Godzilla vs. Kong to lead the search for a power source.
  • Trapper (Dan Stevens): the Titan veterinarian in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire who gives Kong a prototype glove that restores his strength.

Who Are the Villains and Antagonists?

Spoiler warning: deaths and how they happen are described here.

The villains are Alan Jonah, Walter Simmons and Lt. Col. Preston Packard among the humans, and King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, the Skar King and the giant Skullcrawler among the monsters. Alan Jonah (Charles Dance) is the mercenary leader who kidnaps Emma and Madison in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Walter Simmons (Demián Bichir) is the Apex Cybernetics boss in Godzilla vs. Kong who decides humans need a way to stop the Titans and ends up killed by Mechagodzilla. Lt. Col. Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) is the soldier in Kong: Skull Island who becomes obsessed with killing Kong and dies at Kong's hands.

On the monster side, all four end up destroyed. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a powered-up Godzilla kills King Ghidorah with an atomic pulse. In Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla powers up an axe made from one of his dorsal plates with his atomic breath, and Kong uses it to destroy Mechagodzilla. In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kong shatters the frozen Skar King after Shimo turns on him. In Kong: Skull Island, Kong, with human help, kills the giant Skullcrawler.

Who Are the Female Characters in the Monsterverse?

The female roles include Elle Brody (Elizabeth Olsen), Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga), Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown), Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) and Jia (Kaylee Hottle), plus the female MUTO. Each of them, with the actor and film:

  • Elle Brody (Elizabeth Olsen): Godzilla (2014).
  • Sandra Brody (Juliette Binoche): Godzilla (2014).
  • Dr. Vivienne Graham (Sally Hawkins): Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
  • The female MUTO: the larger of the pair in Godzilla (2014).
  • Mason Weaver (Brie Larson): Kong: Skull Island.
  • Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga): Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
  • Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown): Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong.
  • Dr. Ilene Chen (Zhang Ziyi): Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
  • Colonel Diane Foster (Aisha Hinds): Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
  • Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall): Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
  • Jia (Kaylee Hottle): Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
  • Maia Simmons (Eiza González): Godzilla vs. Kong.
  • The Iwi Queen (Fala Chen): Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Is Godzilla a Girl in the Monsterverse?

No, Godzilla is male in the Monsterverse; the films call the creature "he" and "his". The female Titan in Godzilla (2014) is the larger MUTO, not Godzilla.

How Do the Characters Change From Film to Film?

The clearest change across the five films is who carries the story: humans lead in the first film, and the Titans take over by the last. What follows is analysis, and the judgments are opinion.

In Godzilla (2014), the human line runs through Joe and Ford Brody. Joe dies in the chaos after the winged MUTO hatches from the cocoon feeding on the Janjira reactors, and Ford carries the film from there, from the parachute jump into San Francisco to the boat that takes the warhead out into the bay. Godzilla himself arrives late and is explained, by Serizawa and Graham, before he is seen fighting. In my opinion, that delay makes him a force of nature rather than a character. Cinematographer and camera details from the American Society of Cinematographers article on the film note that Godzilla was not built physically, and that filming took place in Vancouver and Oahu, with the HALO jump photographed for the strike team. That helps explain why the monster reads as distant while the people are shot up close.

Kong: Skull Island reverses the approach. Kong attacks in the first act, right after the seismic charges, and the film spends its time on how each human reacts. Packard's grief turns into revenge, while Conrad, Weaver and Marlow see that Kong is gentle toward those who do not threaten him. The credits list Toby Kebbell and Terry Notary under Kong Mo-Cap Services, so the ape's movement is tied to named performers. Compared with Godzilla (2014), Kong is on screen early, and his behavior is the argument of the film. The post-credits scene, with Brooks and San bringing Conrad and Weaver into Monarch and cave images of Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah, is the first time the two creature lines are joined.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters widens the cast of Titans and puts a family at the center. Emma's Orca and her belief that waking the Titans will heal the planet drive the plot, and Madison is the one who turns against it, taking the Orca to Boston and drawing Ghidorah to Fenway Park. Serizawa's death, setting off a nuclear device to restore Godzilla's strength, is the film's clearest echo of the first film's warhead. Mothra's sacrifice, passing her energy to Godzilla, makes the Titans active characters. Production design for the film, covered in a Motion Picture Association piece on its production designer, was built around sets in Atlanta and Mexico City, which gave the Monarch bases and the Antarctic site a physical presence the first film's monsters did not have.

Godzilla vs. Kong is, in my opinion, the film where the Titans become full characters. Jia's sign language with Kong gives him a relationship the earlier films only hinted at, and the Hong Kong fight is staged as a duel with a winner, where Godzilla gets the better of Kong. Walter Simmons is a different kind of villain from Packard or Jonah: Packard acts from revenge and Jonah from the mercenary plan, but Simmons argues, in the film's own terms, that humans need a way to stop the Titans. That makes him the most reasoned of the three, even though Mechagodzilla kills him. The axe made from a Godzilla dorsal plate is the film's hinge: it is the one object both Titans use.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire pushes Kong to the front. He is alone in Hollow Earth, searching for others of his species, and finds Suko and a tribe, which gives him the family and community the earlier films withheld. Godzilla, by contrast, patrols the surface, kills the Titan that attacks Rome and ends the film resting in the Colosseum. Mothra returns after King of the Monsters, this time worshipped by the Iwi, and TheWrap reported that she was removed from the film's marketing. Jia choosing to stay with the Iwi closes an arc that began with her sign language scenes in Godzilla vs. Kong. Compared with the first film, the balance has fully flipped, since the humans mostly support the Titans' story.

Some performers tie the series together. Ken Watanabe plays Serizawa in two films, Sally Hawkins plays Graham in the same two, and David Strathairn plays Admiral William Stenz in both Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Millie Bobby Brown plays Madison in two films and Kyle Chandler plays Mark in two. Kaylee Hottle, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry carry the Wingard films. Wingard directed both of those films, and the composer Tom Holkenborg scored them, which is part of why the last two feel more consistent with each other than with the earlier three, which had Alexandre Desplat, Henry Jackman and Bear McCreary on music.

Who Are the Other Supporting Characters?

Other supporting characters include Hank Marlow (John C. Reilly), Bill Randa (John Goodman), Josh Valentine (Julian Dennison) and Ren Serizawa (Shun Oguri). Hank Marlow, for example, is the pilot stranded on Skull Island for nearly 30 years in Kong: Skull Island. Full credits by film are in the Monsterverse cast and crew guide.

The next film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is slated for a US release on March 26, 2027, according to Legendary Entertainment.
