Tess Ocean: Who Plays Her and What Happens to Her

Tess Ocean is the former wife of Danny Ocean and the woman Terry Benedict is dating at the start of Ocean's Eleven (2001), directed by Steven Soderbergh. Julia Roberts plays her and is billed fifth, behind George Clooney as Danny, Brad Pitt as Rusty Ryan, Andy Garcia as Benedict and Matt Damon as Linus Caldwell. In Ocean's Twelve (2004) she moves up to second billing, and her credited name in both films is Tess Ocean.

The character matters because of where she sits in the plan. Danny walks out of a New Jersey prison and goes straight to a scheme to rob a vault shared by three Las Vegas casinos, all owned by Benedict. The heist is a business problem for a crew of specialists, but Tess turns it into a personal one, since the man being robbed is the man now with Danny's former wife.

The 1960 original, directed by Lewis Milestone, has no Tess. Danny Ocean there is played by Frank Sinatra, and the character credited as Danny's wife is Beatrice Ocean, played by Angie Dickinson. The 2001 film is the version that gives the series its Tess.

She appears in Ocean's Eleven and Ocean's Twelve, and the page for Danny Ocean covers the other half of the relationship.

Tess moves from the prize Benedict holds over Danny in Ocean's Eleven to an active member of the scheme in Ocean's Twelve. In Ocean's Eleven she is mostly the reason the job carries weight: Danny and Rusty Ryan build a crew of eleven, rehearse in a replica of the vault, and time the job to a big boxing match night, while Benedict believes his security is untouched.

The ending of Ocean's Eleven is where she pays off. Benedict traces the robbery to Danny and has him jailed on a parole violation, but the crew had already swapped the cash, so searching them gets him nothing. When Danny is later released, Rusty and Tess pick him up, and Danny and Tess are back together. The film then closes on the gang in front of the Bellagio fountain.

Ocean's Twelve, also directed by Soderbergh, opens with Benedict finding all eleven of the crew and demanding his money back, with interest, in two weeks. Danny's wife joins the plan in Europe, and she poses as the actress Julia Roberts as part of the scheme, a joke that turns the performer's own name into a disguise. The crew chases a bet over a Fabergé egg with François Toulour (the Night Fox), while Europol's Isabel Lahiri closes in. Most of the crew ends up in custody before Danny reveals that the real egg was swapped earlier.

Tess is tied most closely to Danny Ocean, played by George Clooney, and the films treat them as a couple who are separated at the start of Ocean's Eleven and together by the end. She is Danny's ex wife in the first film and his wife in the second, which matches the arc of the pair getting back together.

Her second connection is Terry Benedict, played by Andy Garcia. He is dating her in Ocean's Eleven and owns the casinos Danny targets, so the heist doubles as a rivalry. He returns in Ocean's Twelve as the man who hunts the crew for his money, and he appears again in Ocean's Thirteen, where he is drawn back in as a source of funding for the crew.

She also sits beside Rusty Ryan, played by Brad Pitt, who is Danny's partner on the job. At the close of Ocean's Eleven it is Rusty and Tess who pick Danny up after his release. In Ocean's Twelve she works alongside the full ensemble, including Linus Caldwell, Basher Tarr, Frank Catton and Reuben Tishkoff, rather than standing apart from the crew.

Outside the Soderbergh films, Danny's sister is Debbie Ocean in Ocean's Eight, and that film refers to Danny as late. Tess Ocean does not appear in Ocean's Eight (2018).

Tess Ocean ends the series alive, free and back with Danny Ocean at the close of Ocean's Twelve. Neither film shows her dying or leaving Danny. In Ocean's Eleven she drives away with Danny and Rusty after his release. In Ocean's Twelve the crew leaves custody once Danny shows that the real egg was swapped earlier with help from Toulour's mentor, Gaspar LeMarc, and Toulour then pays Benedict, which settles the debt.

After that, she is absent from the later films in the series. Julia Roberts is not among the fifteen credited cast listed for Ocean's Thirteen (2007), and Tess does not appear in the plot of that film, which follows the crew's revenge on Willy Bank for cheating Reuben Tishkoff. Ocean's Eight (2018) has an entirely new lead cast built around Debbie Ocean, played by Sandra Bullock, and Tess is not listed there either.

The films give no on-screen explanation for her absence from Ocean's Thirteen. The story it tells is a revenge plot in Las Vegas that simply does not call for her.

Tess Ocean's best moment is the pickup outside after Danny's release in Ocean's Eleven, followed by her posing as Julia Roberts in Ocean's Twelve. In my opinion, the best thing Tess does overall is make the heist cost something. A vault job is a mechanism, and mechanisms need a load on them. The fact that Benedict is dating Danny's former wife adds friction to every step of the plan, from the replica vault rehearsal to the blackout on boxing match night, and it gives the final reveal a person to land on.

1. The pickup outside after Danny's release. Benedict gets no cash and no proof, and the film pays that off by having Rusty and Tess be the ones who pick Danny up. It could be argued that this is the cleanest ending in the series, because the money is safe and the couple is back together in the same short scene.

1. Posing as Julia Roberts in Ocean's Twelve. Tess poses as the actress Julia Roberts as part of the crew's plan. As a piece of stunt casting it is the most playful idea in the sequel. Perhaps it also shows the series at its loosest, since the cover story is a joke built on the performer's own name.

If you are new to the series, start with Ocean's Eleven and then watch Ocean's Twelve to see everything Tess does. The Ocean's cast and crew page lists the rest of the ensemble.
