Rusty Ryan: Who He Is and Who Plays Him

Rusty Ryan is Danny Ocean's right-hand man, and Brad Pitt plays him in all three Soderbergh films. Rusty helps Danny recruit and run the specialist crew on each job. He first appears in Ocean's Eleven (2001), directed by Steven Soderbergh, where the newly paroled Danny plans to rob a Las Vegas vault shared by three casinos owned by Terry Benedict, who is now dating Danny's ex-wife Tess.

Pitt returns as Rusty in Ocean's Twelve (2004) and Ocean's Thirteen (2007), and Soderbergh directs both. The three films reached US theaters on December 7, 2001, December 10, 2004 and June 8, 2007. Rusty is billed second in Ocean's Eleven (2001), third in Ocean's Twelve (2004) and second again in Ocean's Thirteen (2007), which tells you how central he is to Danny's crews. He does not appear among the top billed cast of Ocean's Eleven (1960) or of Ocean's Eight (2018), so he belongs to the Soderbergh trilogy only.

The credits list the character only as Rusty Ryan, and no alternate name is credited.

Rusty co-plans the vault job in Ocean's Eleven (2001), is tied to Europol detective Isabel Lahiri in Ocean's Twelve (2004), and rejoins Danny to ruin Willy Bank in Ocean's Thirteen (2007). In the first film, Danny Ocean walks out of prison on parole, and he and Rusty gather a crew of specialists with backing from the retired casino owner Reuben Tishkoff. The team builds a replica of the vault so they can rehearse, while Linus Caldwell, the pickpocket, gets close to Benedict. On the night of the boxing match, an electromagnetic pulse knocks out power across the city, crew members disguised as a SWAT team bag the cash, and a looped recording keeps Benedict's security staff watching a vault that seems guarded. Benedict traces the job to Danny and has him jailed for violating parole, but the crew had already swapped the cash, so he has no proof. When Danny is let out, Rusty and Tess Ocean pick him up, and the three drive away.

Ocean's Twelve changes the pressure. Benedict finds all eleven crew members and demands his money back, with interest, in two weeks. The crew moves to Europe to pull new jobs, but their first plans fall apart, starting with an Amsterdam heist that goes wrong. Isabel Lahiri, who has a past with Rusty, starts closing in on them, and a rival master thief, François Toulour (the Night Fox), is a step ahead. Most of the crew ends up in custody before Danny shows they had already swapped the real Fabergé egg.

In Ocean's Thirteen, Willy Bank cheats Reuben Tishkoff out of a Las Vegas casino deal and Reuben ends up gravely ill. Danny gathers his old crew, Rusty included, to ruin Bank's grand opening. The plan involves rigging the casino's tables and slot machines so that players win big, and beating its cheat detection system.

Rusty is closest to Danny Ocean, played by George Clooney, and the two work as a pair at the head of every crew. In Ocean's Eleven (2001) they recruit the team together, and Danny's wife is Tess Ocean, who stands with them at the end of that film. For the other half of the partnership, see Danny Ocean.

His most personal link is Isabel Lahiri, a Europol detective played by Catherine Zeta-Jones in Ocean's Twelve (2004). She has a past with Rusty, though published synopses do not say what that past was.

Among the crew, Linus Caldwell, played by Matt Damon, is the pickpocket in Ocean's Eleven (2001). Reuben Tishkoff, played by Elliott Gould, is the retired casino owner who backs the first job. The rest of the ensemble includes Basher Tarr (Don Cheadle), Frank Catton (Bernie Mac), Livingston Dell (Eddie Jemison), Saul Bloom (Carl Reiner) and Yen (Shaobo Qin), each a member of Danny's crew.

On the other side stands Terry Benedict, the casino owner played by Andy Garcia, who is the mark in Ocean's Eleven (2001) and the creditor in Ocean's Twelve (2004).

Rusty Ryan survives every film he appears in and finishes the series free alongside the crew. At the end of Ocean's Eleven (2001), he and Tess Ocean pick up Danny, and the film closes on the gang gathered in front of the Bellagio fountain. In Ocean's Twelve (2004), the crew is freed once Danny reveals the egg swap, François Toulour loses the bet and pays Benedict, and Reuben delivers the money with a promise of no more jobs against Benedict's casinos. Ocean's Thirteen (2007) ends with Bank's opening ruined, Reuben set up with a casino of his own, and the crew left free and wealthy.

Rusty and Isabel Lahiri do not reunite on screen in Ocean's Thirteen (2007). Catherine Zeta-Jones is not among the top 15 credited cast of that film, which is built around the revenge on Bank.

Rusty is also not among the top 15 billed cast of Ocean's Eight (2018), which follows Debbie Ocean after Danny's death. Warner Bros. has dated an untitled Ocean's Eleven prequel for June 25, 2027, according to Variety Australia, and Motorsport.com reports that Bradley Cooper has filmed 1962 Monaco Grand Prix scenes for it.

The best Rusty Ryan moment is the replica vault rehearsal in Ocean's Eleven. In my opinion, it is where his role as Danny's co-planner shows most clearly, because the crew he helped assemble builds a copy of the vault so they can practice the job. It makes the later blackout, the SWAT disguises and the looped security recording feel earned rather than lucky.

Second, I would pick the reveal in Ocean's Twelve that the real Fabergé egg had been swapped long before the Night Fox made his move. Rusty is part of the crew that looks beaten while the work is already done, and I think it is the cleverest bit of mechanics in the trilogy.

Third comes the rigged casino in Ocean's Thirteen, where Rusty and the crew have to beat a cheat detection system and make the house lose its expected profit. When their drilling equipment fails and they turn to Benedict for money, the plan bends without breaking. That is Rusty's real appeal for me: the jobs go wrong, and the crew he works beside finishes them anyway.
