Otto Octavius Spider Man: Doc Ock Across the Films
Otto Octavius, the Spider-Man villain known as Doc Ock, is played by Alfred Molina in Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), while Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) credits a separate animated Doc Ock voiced by Kathryn Hahn. He is credited in four films in all, the fourth being Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). He is a fusion scientist whose four mechanical arms take over his mind, and he does not become Spider-Man in any of the four films.

Who Is Otto Octavius in the Spider-Man Movies?
Otto Octavius is a fusion scientist who becomes the villain Doc Ock, and he is credited in four Spider-Man films. The credits use slightly different names: Spider-Man 2 lists him as Doc Ock / Otto Octavius, Spider-Man: No Way Home lists Dr. Otto Octavius / Doc Ock, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse lists Doc Ock (voice). Fans also say Doctor Octopus or Dr. Octopus, and those names point to the same character.
Otto Octavius appears in Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). Sam Raimi directed the first of them, where Alfred Molina plays him. The animated Into the Spider-Verse, directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, gives the role to Kathryn Hahn as a voice, and that Doc Ock belongs to the animated universe rather than to Molina's. Jon Watts directed No Way Home, which brings Molina back. Across the Spider-Verse, directed by Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson and Joaquim Dos Santos, also credits the character, further down its cast list.
In Spider-Man 2, Otto starts as a respected scientist rather than a villain. Peter Parker admires him, and Harry Osborn, who now runs Oscorp, funds his fusion research. His wife, Rosalie Octavius (Donna Murphy), is at his side until a public demonstration goes wrong. The reactor fails, Rosalie is killed, and four mechanical arms fuse to his body, which is the look that defines Doc Ock on screen.

Why Did Doctor Octopus Turn Evil in Spider-Man 2?Spoilers
Otto Octavius turns evil because the accident fuses four AI driven mechanical arms to his spine, and the arms take over his mind. The reactor goes out of control during the demonstration, his wife Rosalie dies, and the arms push him to start robbing banks so he can rebuild the reactor. In other words, the cause is the arms rather than a change of heart in the man himself.
In Spider-Man 2, Doc Ock beats Spider-Man in their first fight, and Peter's powers then begin to fail, so he gives up the costume for a while. Harry Osborn then offers to trade Spider-Man to Doc Ock in return for the reactor materials, because Harry blames Spider-Man for his father's death. Doc Ock kidnaps Mary Jane Watson, and the two men fight across a speeding elevated train. Peter saves the passengers, collapses from the effort, and is carried to safety by them. Otto learns Peter is Spider-Man only when Peter unmasks, and he is then persuaded to resist the arms.
Is Dr Octopus evil in No Way Home? Not by the end. Peter's spell with Doctor Strange goes wrong and opens the multiverse, and Otto arrives with Max Dillon, Flint Marko, Curt Connors and Norman Osborn, all villains from other realities who know Spider-Man's identity. Peter wants to cure them rather than send them back to certain deaths, so he steals the spell. Osborn's Green Goblin side retakes control and turns the villains against Peter, and the cures happen at the Statue of Liberty with help from the two other Spider-Men.
Who Are Otto Octavius's Key Relationships?
Otto's most important relationship is with Peter Parker / Spider-Man, who starts as his admirer and ends as the person who talks him down. In Spider-Man 2 Peter sees him as a mentor, which is why the fight on the elevated train hurts as much as it does. Spider-Man: No Way Home credits Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, so Otto meets three versions of the hero.
Rosalie Octavius, Otto's wife, is played by Donna Murphy in Spider-Man 2, and her death in the failed demonstration sets the tragedy in motion. Without her, the film would have a scientist and a malfunction, whereas with her it has a grieving husband whose mind is then hijacked.
Harry Osborn is the link to Oscorp, since he funds the research and later offers Spider-Man up in exchange for the reactor materials. Mary Jane Watson matters as the person Doc Ock kidnaps to force the final fight. In No Way Home the key tie is with Norman Osborn, whose Green Goblin side turns the visiting villains against Peter. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is the other link there, because his spell is what brings Otto into that universe. For the wider rogues gallery, see the Spider-Man villains page.
Does Doc Ock Die in Spider-Man 2 and No Way Home?Spoilers
Doc Ock dies in Spider-Man 2, and in No Way Home he is cured, then sent home. In Spider-Man 2, Otto regains control of himself, sinks the reactor into the river, and drowns along with it. Peter takes Mary Jane to safety afterward, and Otto is the one who chooses to end his own experiment.
In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Otto is cured at the Statue of Liberty rather than killed. The fight there is about curing the visiting villains, not destroying them, and Molina's Otto is among those who are cured and sent home.
We make no claim about the fate of the Doc Ock credited as Doc Ock (voice) in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where the role belongs to Kathryn Hahn, or about the character's credit in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
What Is the Best Otto Octavius Scene in the Spider-Man Movies?
The best Otto Octavius scene is the elevated train fight in Spider-Man 2 (2004), directed by Sam Raimi. It combines the speeding train, a kidnapped Mary Jane, and Peter collapsing after saving the passengers, then being carried to safety by those same people. Few superhero films give a hero a collective rescue like that.
The second-best Otto Octavius moment is the scene in Spider-Man 2 where Peter unmasks and Otto resists the arms. The scene works because the earlier film has built Otto as a man Peter respects, so the plea lands as a conversation between two scientists. That being said, the sacrifice that follows, when he sinks the reactor in the river, is what turns a villain into a tragic figure.
That makes Otto the most sympathetic villain in the Raimi trilogy. Norman Osborn dies when his own glider kills him in Spider-Man (2002), and in Spider-Man 3 Peter forgives Flint Marko, but only Otto chooses his own ending. In No Way Home the Statue of Liberty cure gives Molina one last scene as a man rather than as the arms, which I would rank third.
