Who Is Grogu in Star Wars?

Grogu is the young foundling in the care of Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, and the character gives The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) its title. The film was directed by Jon Favreau, runs 132 minutes and is classed on this site as a spinoff, not a main saga entry. Its setup places Din Djarin and Grogu in the service of the New Republic, tracking down Imperial warlords who survived the Empire's fall.

Pedro Pascal is billed first, as The Mandalorian, with Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder credited as the suit and stunt performers for that role. Grogu Star Wars Story Arc: What Happens in The Mandalorian and GroguSpoilers

In The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), Grogu helps Din Djarin rescue Rotta the Hutt on the moon Shakari, then saves Din's life by bringing an antidote after the Hutt Twins have him poisoned. The rescue is the price of a deal: the Hutt Twins promise the location of the warlord Commander Coin if the Mandalorian brings back Rotta, the son of Jabba the Hutt.

Rotta is a gladiator on Shakari and refuses to leave, so Din Djarin beats the young Hutt in the arena but spares his life. The warlord known as Janu then floods the arena with monsters. The Mandalorian and Grogu manage to capture Rotta, who tells them that Janu and Coin are one and the same man. Din Djarin raids Janu's compound, but the bounty hunter Embo catches him and hands him to the Hutt Twins.

The Twins have the Mandalorian poisoned by a Dragonsnake, and here Grogu becomes the one doing the saving, bringing an antidote from a fisherman. The pair then sneak into the Twins' palace, where the Dragonsnake devours the Twins. The New Republic, led by Colonel Ward, destroys the palace, and Rotta chooses to join the New Republic. Din Djarin then teaches Grogu to fly the Razor Crest.

Who Is Grogu Connected To? Din Djarin, Yoda and Luke Skywalker

Grogu's central relationship is with Din Djarin, the Mandalorian who cares for Grogu and travels with him on missions for the New Republic. In The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), the two take assignments together and share the Razor Crest. Around them sit Rotta, voiced by Jeremy Allen White, and Colonel Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver.

Is Grogu related to Yoda? No family link between Grogu and Yoda is established in the film record. The film record does not name Grogu's species. Any claim of a family tie would be a guess, so none is made.

Is Grogu before or after Yoda? In story order, The Mandalorian and Grogu comes after Yoda's appearances in the original trilogy and before his appearance in The Last Jedi. Yoda is voiced by Frank Oz in six films: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Last Jedi. In chronological order, The Mandalorian and Grogu sits tenth of thirteen.

No scene in the film record places Grogu with Luke Skywalker or at the Jedi Temple. For Luke's own appearances, see Luke Skywalker, and for Yoda, see Yoda.

Does Grogu Die? Grogu's Fate in the FilmSpoilers

Grogu does not die in The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), and Grogu is alive in the final scene. The only death-related moment involves Din Djarin, who is poisoned by the Dragonsnake and survives because of the antidote Grogu delivers.

The film ends with the Mandalorian and Grogu flying off together in the Razor Crest, with Grogu now learning to pilot it. The film record describes no larger setup for a sequel, and it places no Grogu scene in Star Wars: Starfighter. Anything about Grogu's later fate would be speculation, so it is left out until a source supports it.

What Is Grogu's Best Moment in The Mandalorian and Grogu?

Grogu's best moment in The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) is delivering the antidote that saves Din Djarin after the Hutt Twins have him poisoned. In my opinion, it works because it reverses the usual pattern in which the Mandalorian protects the foundling. With the Dragonsnake's poison taking hold, the child has to act alone, and a fisherman's antidote is the means. The scene also pays off the Dragonsnake, which later devours the Hutt Twins in their own palace, so the creature that threatens Din becomes the instrument of the Twins' end.

My second pick is the closing scene, where Din Djarin teaches Grogu to fly the Razor Crest. It is a modest ending next to the arena fight on Shakari, but it shows the relationship moving from guardian and charge toward something closer to crewmates. I think that small, quiet payoff suits this character better than a big finale would.

A comparison with the series helps here. Rotta the Huttlet, the rescue target, first appears in Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008), where Anakin Skywalker and his new apprentice Ahsoka Tano carry the sick child toward Tatooine and Ahsoka earns Anakin's respect. The 2026 film flips that setup: Rotta is now a gladiator who refuses to leave, voiced by Jeremy Allen White, where David Acord voiced the infant in 2008. The mentor and young partner pairing also echoes Anakin and Ahsoka, though Din and Grogu are guardian and foundling, not Jedi master and Padawan.

On production, the film is the first Star Wars feature shot entirely in California, per the state's 2024 announcement of its tax credit program. Ludwig Göransson composed the score, and Jon Favreau, who also voiced Rio Durant in Solo: A Star Wars Story, directed.
