Light Fury: How to Train Your Dragon Character Profile

A Light Fury is a kind of dragon in the How to Train Your Dragon films, and the one the story follows is a female who first appears in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), directed by Dean DeBlois. Toothless is a Night Fury, and she is a different kind of dragon, so the two should not be confused.

She arrives through the villain. The warlords hand a captive female Light Fury to the hunter Grimmel, who plans to use her as bait to lure Toothless, whom the warlords want as an alpha. That makes her both a lure in someone else's trap and a character in her own right, at a time when Hiccup is trying to lead a crowded, raided Berk toward the Hidden World, the legendary dragon refuge his late father once described.

She has no dialogue in the film, so she acts through movement and flight. When she first meets Toothless in the woods, the two are clearly drawn to each other, but she runs the moment she senses humans nearby.

The Light Fury goes from a hunter's lure to the dragon who saves Toothless in the climax, and her choices drive the second half of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). Her arc runs alongside Hiccup's in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), and follows her own path through the story.

Her story begins in captivity, handed to Grimmel as a lure. Her first free moment comes in the woods, where she and Toothless are visibly drawn together. The moment she senses humans, she bolts. Toothless is the one who changes course because of her: when Hiccup moves the villagers and their dragons out to sea after Grimmel's Deathgrippers wreck much of Berk, and the group settles on an island named New Berk, Toothless leaves to join her.

Grimmel sets a trap for Hiccup's group, though most escape. Hiccup and Astrid then reach the Hidden World and find her there with Toothless as alpha and her as his mate. Seeing the pair at home, Hiccup realizes that humans do not belong in that place.

Grimmel tracks them down and captures both dragons, and he uses Toothless to take control of the dragons of Berk. Hiccup and the riders strike back in wingsuits and free Toothless, but Grimmel drugs her and flies off with her. During the chase Hiccup and Toothless defeat the Deathgrippers, then Toothless is tranquilized and falls. She is the one who catches him, and Grimmel falls to his death.

With the danger over, Hiccup and Toothless accept that dragons are not safe among humans. Hiccup says goodbye, and the Berkians let their dragons go. A decade later, Hiccup and Astrid, now married with children, visit the Light Fury and Toothless, who have three young hybrid dragons.

The Light Fury and Toothless are mates, and the film builds that bond through behavior rather than dialogue. Syfy reports that Roger Deakins, who served as a visual consultant on the series, played a role in the courtship scene and in the design of the undersea world.

Her link to Hiccup runs through Toothless. Hiccup is Toothless's rider and friend, and when he sees Toothless as alpha beside her in the Hidden World, he accepts that dragons are safer without humans.

Her relationship with Grimmel is one of captivity. The warlords hand her to him as bait, and later, after he has captured both dragons, he drugs her and flies off while Hiccup and the riders free Toothless.

Because Toothless is a Night Fury and she is a Light Fury, their three young are hybrids. They are the pair's children, seen ten years later when Hiccup and Astrid visit with their own children.

No, the Light Fury lives. She comes through the climax alive after saving Toothless, and she ends the story in the Hidden World as his mate.

The final choice in the film is made for her protection as much as anyone's. Once Grimmel is beaten, Hiccup and Toothless agree that dragons will only be safe if humans stay away from them. Hiccup says goodbye, and the Berkians free their dragons to go to the Hidden World.

Her last scene comes ten years later. She and Toothless have three hybrid young when Hiccup and Astrid arrive with their own children. Hiccup vows that dragons will stay hidden until the two species can live together in peace, so the film leaves her in a family scene instead of a sacrifice. For Hiccup's own side of that farewell, see his profile on the Hiccup page.

The live action How to Train Your Dragon (2025) adapts the first story, and its plot does not include her. Cate Blanchett joins as Valka in the sequel, but no casting or plot detail is confirmed that says whether the Light Fury will appear in the live action How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2027), set for a US release on June 11, 2027. Until that changes, How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2027) remains an open question for her.

The Light Fury's best moments in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) are her first meeting with Toothless in the woods, her rescue of him during the Deathgrippers chase, the Hidden World reveal and the ten year epilogue. These are my picks, and they are opinion, not a ranking.

The first meeting gives her a full personality before she has any dialogue, which she never has. She is drawn to Toothless, but she bolts when she senses the humans, and in my opinion that mix of curiosity and caution makes her read as a wary, independent animal rather than a prop.

The rescue comes when Toothless falls, tranquilized, during the chase with the Deathgrippers. It is the clearest answer to the complaint that she is only a love interest, because she saves the title dragon at the point where Hiccup cannot, and it presents the pair as equals.

The Hidden World reveal shows Toothless as alpha with the Light Fury beside him. In my opinion, it softens the goodbye, because Toothless is not lost, he has arrived somewhere he belongs.

The epilogue brings Hiccup and Astrid back ten years later to find the pair with their three hybrid young. It is my favorite closing image of the trilogy, since the film ends on the two dragons rather than on the humans who spent three films around them.
