Who Is Toothless in How to Train Your Dragon?

Toothless is a Night Fury, the rare dragon that becomes Hiccup's closest friend in How to Train Your Dragon (2010), directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. Hiccup, the small and awkward son of the Berk chief Stoick, brings him down with a homemade launcher, and nobody in the village believes the claim. Hiccup goes looking for the creature himself, finds it wounded in the woods and cannot bring himself to kill it.

The name arrives right after that choice: Hiccup calls the dragon Toothless. Because his tail fin is damaged, Toothless cannot fly alone. Hiccup builds him a replacement fin and a harness, so the two can fly together, with Hiccup in the saddle. That shared flight is the engine of the whole saga, because it turns a hunter and his prey into a pair who need each other.

On screen, Toothless is a performance built from movement and sound rather than dialogue. The credits for How to Train Your Dragon (2010) list Randy Thom as the voice of Toothless (uncredited). Toothless has no alternate names; the credits list him only as Toothless (voice) (uncredited).

He appears in How to Train Your Dragon (2010), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) and the live action How to Train Your Dragon (2025). He also stars in the short Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury (2011), which is a short rather than a feature film. In the TV special How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (2019), Hiccup and Toothless trade stories about their bond, according to the DreamWorks synopsis.

Toothless Across the Films: From Wounded Night Fury to AlphaSpoilers

Toothless goes from a wounded Night Fury in How to Train Your Dragon (2010) to the alpha of the dragons in How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) and a mate and father in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). In the first film, he is the secret friend who teaches Hiccup how dragons really behave. Hiccup uses kindness instead of force in the dragon training class, and Toothless shows Hiccup and Astrid the hidden nest. There, they find the Red Death, a huge dragon that forces the others to bring it food. When Toothless is captured during Hiccup's final exam, Stoick believes his son has betrayed the village and disowns him. Hiccup frees Toothless, rallies his friends and rides into the battle, and together they defeat the Red Death.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), directed by Dean DeBlois and promoted with a trailer released by DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox, takes place five years after the Vikings of Berk made peace with dragons. Toothless and Hiccup spend their days charting unexplored lands. The film darkens when the warlord Drago Bludvist attacks a sanctuary with a Bewilderbeast of his own and takes control of every dragon in sight. Toothless, controlled by Drago Bludvist's Bewilderbeast, fires at Hiccup, and Stoick is killed shielding his son. Hiccup frees Toothless from the hold, the freed dragons rally to him, and they drive the Bewilderbeast back into the sea. The dragons accept Toothless as their new alpha.

In How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), Toothless gets a partner. Warlords hand a captive female Light Fury to the hunter Grimmel, and Grimmel uses her as bait to capture Toothless and take control of the dragons. Toothless and the Light Fury meet in the woods and are clearly drawn to each other. When Hiccup leads Berk to a new island, Toothless leaves to join her. Hiccup and Astrid then find the Hidden World, where Toothless is the alpha and she is his mate. Grimmel follows, captures both dragons and uses Toothless to take control of Berk's dragons. Hiccup and the riders strike back and free Toothless, but Toothless is tranquilized and falls in the chase. The Light Fury rescues him, and Grimmel falls to his death.

The live action How to Train Your Dragon (2025) retells the first story. Hiccup builds Toothless a harness and a replacement tail fin, Astrid follows Hiccup, discovers his secret and is won over after a flight with Toothless, and Stoick forces Toothless to guide the Viking fleet to the nest. Hiccup and Toothless set the Red Death ablaze, it crashes into the volcano, and Toothless saves the badly hurt Hiccup.

Toothless and Hiccup, the Light Fury and the Rest of Berk

Toothless's most important relationships are with Hiccup, his rider and best friend, and the Light Fury, his mate. The bond with Hiccup starts with a shot Hiccup regrets and grows into a partnership where each covers the other's weakness. Toothless needs the tail fin to fly, and Hiccup needs the dragon to believe in himself. The ending of How to Train Your Dragon (2010) makes it physical: Hiccup loses part of his left leg and wakes to find Toothless by his side and a prosthetic foot built by Gobber. In the live action How to Train Your Dragon (2025), Toothless gets a matching prosthetic fin, a small touch that makes the pairing feel earned.

Toothless's mate is the Light Fury. She first appears in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) as bait set by Grimmel, and the film treats her as a partner rather than a prize. Toothless and the Light Fury meet in the woods and are clearly drawn to one another, though she runs when she senses the humans. By the end of the film, she is his mate in the Hidden World, and she rescues him when he falls. The credits give her no personal name, so she is known only by her species.

Toothless and the Light Fury have three young hybrid dragons, called the Night Lights, shown in the epilogue of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). The epilogue jumps ahead a decade, when Hiccup and Astrid, now married with children, visit them and the families fly together. The names Dart, Ruffrunner and Pouncer are sometimes searched for as the young dragons' names, but none of Romper, Inverse or the Wikipedia entries on the films confirms any individual name, or describes how the young look, so only the group name Night Lights is established. In the short How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (2019), which first aired on NBC on December 3, 2019, the young Night Lights grow curious about a picture Toothless drew of Hiccup and New Berk. They fly to the village while their parents sleep and sneak around during pageant preparations, then retreat after mistaking the Toothless costume for their father. Toothless and the Light Fury wake in a panic to find them gone, and once they find them, they decide to stay together and watch the pageant from a distance.

No father is named for Toothless in the films, and he has no family of his own on screen until the Light Fury arrives. Among humans, Astrid learns his secret and is won over after a flight with him, while Stoick, believing his son has betrayed the village, disowns Hiccup over the dragon and later sees that Hiccup was right all along. Gobber, Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut and Tuffnut also appear alongside him, though they matter to him mostly because they matter to Hiccup.

What Happens to Toothless at the End?Spoilers

Toothless is alive when the animated films close, and his final scene shows him settled in the Hidden World with the Light Fury and their three young hybrid dragons. Once Grimmel has fallen to his death, Hiccup and Toothless agree that dragons will be safe only if humans keep away from them. Hiccup says farewell, and the Berkians free their dragons to make the journey to the Hidden World.

The final scene leaps forward ten years. Hiccup and Astrid, now married with children, visit the dragon family. Hiccup promises that dragons will stay hidden until people and dragons can live side by side in peace. That promise is the last word on the animated Toothless: it is a farewell, and it still leaves room for a reunion.

The earlier films put him in danger in other ways. In How to Train Your Dragon (2010), he comes through the fight against the Red Death. In How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), Drago's Bewilderbeast takes control of him instead of killing him, and Stoick is the one who dies. In the live action How to Train Your Dragon (2025), he saves the badly hurt Hiccup after the Red Death crashes into the volcano and explodes.

The next film is the live action How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2027), dated by Universal for June 11, 2027.

Best Toothless Moments, Ranked by Feeling

In my opinion, the best Toothless moments are his first meeting with Hiccup, the first flight with the replacement fin, the dragons rallying to him as alpha, his courtship of the Light Fury and the matching prosthetic fin. Other fans will pick differently, and that is half the fun.

First, the woods scene in How to Train Your Dragon (2010), when Hiccup stands over the wounded Night Fury and cannot finish the job. It sets up everything else, and it works because the dragon is allowed to simply look back at him.

Second, the first flight with the replacement tail fin in How to Train Your Dragon (2010). It is the point where Toothless stops being a creature in a story and becomes a character with a stake in the outcome, since Hiccup now steers a fin that only works with the rider in place.

Third, the moment in How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) when the freed dragons rally to Toothless. After the tragedy of Stoick's death, it gives the film its release, and it is the clearest answer to why the dragons accept him as their alpha.

Fourth, the courtship in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), where Toothless and the Light Fury are drawn to each other in the woods. It is a love story told almost without words. The goodbye at the end is harder, and it could be argued that it is also the better piece of storytelling, since it asks a family audience to accept that a happy ending can include a separation.

Last, the matching prosthetic fin at the close of the live action How to Train Your Dragon (2025), where Toothless gets a matching prosthetic fin. It is a small, precise detail that shows the remake understands why the original friendship worked.
