How to Train Your Dragon Cast: Live Action and Original Voice Actors

Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid lead the cast of the live action How to Train Your Dragon (2025), joined by Gerard Butler as Stoick and Nick Frost as Gobber. In the animated How to Train Your Dragon (2010), Hiccup, Astrid and Gobber were voiced by Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera and Craig Ferguson, so Butler is the one actor who appears in both casts. Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois directed the animated film, and DeBlois directed the live action one.

The credits go deeper than the dragon riders. How to Train Your Dragon (2010) also lists Robin Atkin Downes as Ack and Philip McGrade as Starkard, and Randy Thom provides the uncredited voice of Toothless. The newer film's supporting list includes Naomi Wirthner as Gothi, Andrea Ware as Burnheart, Anna Leong Brophy as Retcha and Marcus Onilude as Snorti. The animated sequels kept most of the original voices. How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) brought back Baruchel, Ferrera, Butler, Ferguson, Hill, Mintz-Plasse and Wiig, and added Cate Blanchett as Valka, Djimon Hounsou as Drago and Kit Harington as Eret. For How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), F. Murray Abraham arrived as Grimmel, and Justin Rupple stepped in for T.J. Miller as Tuffnut. Parents choosing a film can rely on the ratings: How to Train Your Dragon (2010), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) and How to Train Your Dragon (2025) are all rated PG in the US, the UK and Australia.

Dean DeBlois has directed every released film in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, sharing the credit with Chris Sanders on How to Train Your Dragon (2010) and working alone on the three films since. That makes him the one creative constant across the animated trilogy and the live action remake.

DeBlois directed How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), which played Out of Competition at the Cannes Film Festival that year, and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). How to Train Your Dragon (2025) was his first live action feature as director, according to TheWrap. The cinematographer Roger Deakins is described by Screen Daily and Syfy as a visual consultant on the second and third animated films. John Powell is credited as composer on each of the four released features, and TheWrap reports that he returned for the live action version. For the live action How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2027), DeBlois is confirmed as director and reported by Variety Australia as writer, and Marc Platt and Adam Siegel are reportedly named as producers. For the full list of title pages, see how to train your dragon movies.

Gerard Butler is the only performer in How to Train Your Dragon (2025) who also voiced his role in the animated films. Cate Blanchett is reported to rejoin the series as Valka in the live action How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2027).

Butler's return keeps the strained bond between Stoick and Hiccup that drives the first act of both versions. Every other principal and supporting role was recast one for one: Mason Thames for Jay Baruchel, Nico Parker for America Ferrera, Nick Frost for Craig Ferguson, Gabriel Howell for Jonah Hill, Julian Dennison for Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bronwyn James for Kristen Wiig, Harry Trevaldwyn for T.J. Miller, Peter Serafinowicz for David Tennant, Murray McArthur for Kieron Elliott as Hoark and Ruth Codd for Ashley Jensen as Phlegma. The comparison is explored further in how to train your dragon live action vs animated.

The reported cast for How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2027) repeats the 2025 principals. Deseret News reported on April 3, 2025 that Thames, Parker, Butler (as Stoick the Vast), Dennison, Howell, James, Trevaldwyn and Frost were set to return, and TheWrap reported Blanchett's casting as Valka on January 15, 2026. None of these names has been confirmed by the studio. Blanchett voiced Valka in both How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), so she would be moving from voice to live action in the same role.

On the production side, Screen Rant reported on May 15, 2026 that DeBlois announced the end of principal photography after 81 days, with the film moving to post production. Universal set the US release date of June 11, 2027 at CinemaCon, and no move has been reported.
