Who Is Raoul Silva to James Bond?

Raoul Silva is the main antagonist of Skyfall (2012), the 23rd film in the EON series, directed by Sam Mendes. He is played by Javier Bardem, who is billed third behind Daniel Craig and Judi Dench, and the credits give his character name as "Silva". Skyfall had its UK premiere in London on 23 October 2012 and opened in UK theaters on 26 October 2012; its US release is reported as 9 November 2012.

His story rests on a personal grievance rather than a plan for money or conquest. Silva is a former MI6 agent who believes M (Judi Dench) abandoned him, and that belief drives everything he does. That makes him a different kind of enemy from the SPECTRE masterminds of the 1960s films, and closer in spirit to Alec Trevelyan in GoldenEye (1995), another former colleague who turns on MI6.

Silva is also a technical threat. The film describes him as a cyberterrorist, so his weapons are access and information as much as guns, and Bond, the field agent, meets an opponent who can strike MI6 from a keyboard. For a series that spent decades on volcano lairs and orbital lasers, that is a real change of scale, and it fits the grounded tone of the Daniel Craig era.

Silva is a standalone villain. He does not appear in Spectre (2015) or No Time to Die (2021), where the series returns to Blofeld and then to Lyutsifer Safin. For the wider rogues gallery, start with James Bond villains.

What Happens to Raoul Silva in Skyfall?Spoilers

In Skyfall, Silva is revealed as the former MI6 agent behind the attack on MI6, lets Bond capture him in order to reach M, and is killed at the chapel near Skyfall. His arc runs from hidden mastermind to captured prisoner to hunter, and it tracks the film's three acts. Bond is shot during a train fight in Turkey and falls into a river, while the mercenary Patrice escapes with a stolen list of undercover agents. When a hacker blows up part of the MI6 building, Bond returns and M sends him to find Patrice and whoever hired him.

That search leads through Shanghai and Macau, where Bond meets Séverine, who takes him to a remote island. There he meets Silva for the first time, a former MI6 agent turned cyberterrorist who blames M for abandoning him. Silva has Séverine killed, and Bond apparently captures him and brings him to London.

The capture is the film's central twist. Silva escapes on purpose, because his real aim is to kill M, and Bond has to stop an attack on the inquiry led by Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes). Silva was never really the prisoner; he chose to be in custody. From there the film moves the fight away from London and into Scotland, where Bond takes M to Skyfall, his childhood home, and sets traps with the gamekeeper Kincade.

Silva's men attack, the house is destroyed, and M is badly wounded. Silva follows them to a nearby chapel for the final confrontation.

Who Is Raoul Silva Connected To?

Silva's most important relationship is with M (Judi Dench), the head of MI6 whom he holds responsible for abandoning him. Everything else in his story is organized around her, and Bond is the obstacle between them. Bond and Silva are both agents MI6 treated as expendable, but Bond returns to service and Silva does not.

Bond (Daniel Craig) is the second tie. Silva is the enemy Bond tracks after the Turkey mission, and their first meeting takes place on the island where Silva holds court. The two mirror each other only in a limited sense, since one still serves M and the other wants her dead.

Other characters Silva touches include:

  • Séverine (Bérénice Marlohe), the woman who leads Bond to Silva's island and who is killed by him.
  • Patrice (Ola Rapace), the mercenary who steals the list of undercover agents and whom Bond pursues from Istanbul to Shanghai and Macau.
  • Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), who leads the inquiry into M and whose hearing Silva attacks.
  • Kincade (Albert Finney), the gamekeeper who helps Bond defend Skyfall.

He has no recorded link to SPECTRE. Skyfall predates the organization's return in Spectre (2015), and the cast list for that film does not include him. He is also not presented as a relative of M. His connection to her is professional and, in his own mind, a betrayal. For more on the hero he faces, see the James Bond (character) page.

How Does Raoul Silva Die?Spoilers

Raoul Silva dies at the chapel near Skyfall, killed by Bond with a thrown knife. The fight that ends him is the climax of the Scottish act, after the house has been destroyed and M has been wounded.

Silva's death does not save the person he was after. M dies from her wounds in Bond's arms, so Silva's central aim, her death, is achieved even as he loses his life. It is a bitter result, and it explains why the film ends in mourning rather than celebration.

After M's funeral, Eve (Naomie Harris) says she is leaving fieldwork for a desk job as secretary to Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), and Mallory takes over as the new M. Bond says he is ready to get back to work. Silva's story is finished, and no later film brings him back.

Raoul Silva's Best Moments, Ranked by Craft

In my opinion, Silva's best moment is the planned escape from custody, because it rewrites what the audience thought was happening. Bond spends a full sequence bringing a dangerous man to London, and then the film reveals that the prison was the plan. It is a set piece built from misdirection rather than explosions, and the craft of staging it is the part that stands out most.

The island meeting is the strongest character introduction of the Craig run. The film delays Silva until Bond has already followed the trail through Shanghai and Macau, and then gives him a full scene with Séverine's death attached. By the time he is captured, the audience understands he is dangerous and personal at once.

Third comes the inquiry attack, which shows how Silva operates. He does not send a bomber to the hearing and hope; he uses his earlier escape to put himself within reach of M. As such, the sequence ties the villain's cleverness to Gareth Mallory's inquiry and gives the middle of the film its tension.

Finally, the chapel fight is a smaller, quieter ending than most Bond finales, and it is the right one. A thrown knife, with no helicopter or submarine in sight, matches the story's themes of age and loss. The only complaint is that Silva has less screen time than a villain this strong deserves. If you want to compare him with the rest of the series, the James Bond movies ranked page places Skyfall among all 25 EON films.
