James Bond Cast: Who Has Played 007?

Six actors have played James Bond in the 25 EON Productions films, and a seventh, David Niven, played the character in the unofficial 1967 spoof Casino Royale. Roger Moore holds the record with seven films, while George Lazenby appeared in one. The table lists each actor's run in release order.

Connery also starred in the non EON Never Say Never Again.

Dr. No (UK release October 7, 1962 and US release May 8, 1963, both as reported), directed by Terence Young, introduced Sean Connery as Bond. He starred in the first five films, handed the part to George Lazenby for On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), directed by Peter R. Hunt, and then returned for Diamonds Are Forever. Connery also headlined Never Say Never Again, which Jack Schwartzman's Taliafilm made independently with Kevin McClory as executive producer, so it sits outside the official series.

Roger Moore took over in Live and Let Die (1973), directed by Guy Hamilton, and kept the role through A View to a Kill. Timothy Dalton followed in The Living Daylights (1987), directed by John Glen, after Pierce Brosnan, who had been linked to the part, stayed on the television series Remington Steele. Brosnan arrived later in GoldenEye (1995), directed by Martin Campbell, and Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (2006), also directed by Campbell. Craig's fifth and most recent film is No Time to Die (2021), directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, with a UK premiere on September 28, 2021 at the Royal Albert Hall in London and a US release on October 8, 2021.

The main supporting cast of the EON films includes Ursula Andress, Gert Fröbe, Diana Rigg, Christopher Lee, Eva Green and Christoph Waltz. Andress played Honey Ryder in Dr. No, Fröbe played Auric Goldfinger in Goldfinger, Rigg played Tracy Di Vicenzo opposite Lazenby, and Lee played Francisco Scaramanga in The Man with the Golden Gun. The Moore years brought Barbara Bach as Major Anya Amasova, Carole Bouquet as Melina Havelock, Maud Adams as Octopussy and Christopher Walken as Max Zorin. Sean Bean played Alec Trevelyan against Brosnan, Michelle Yeoh played Wai Lin, and Halle Berry played Jinx. The Craig era features Green as Vesper Lynd, Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva, Waltz as Ernst Stavro Blofeld and Rami Malek as Lyutsifer Safin. Full profiles sit on the James Bond characters page, and the order of the actors is on James Bond actors in order.

The question most readers ask next is who comes after Craig. Amazon MGM Studios confirmed on May 14, 2026 that casting had begun, saying the search for the next James Bond is underway, and it has named no lead actor. TheWrap reported on October 22, 2026, citing insiders, that final screen tests would start the following day, and the studio declined to comment. The reported shortlist, with each source and status, is covered on the next James Bond movie page.

Who Has Directed the James Bond Films?

Twelve directors have made the 25 EON Bond films: John Glen (five), Guy Hamilton (four), Terence Young and Lewis Gilbert (three each), Martin Campbell and Sam Mendes (two each), and six who directed one. Glen directed the most, one after another from For Your Eyes Only to Licence to Kill. The table groups the films by director.

DirectorEON filmsTitles
John Glen5For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View to a Kill, The Living Daylights, Licence to Kill
Guy Hamilton4Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun
Terence Young3Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Thunderball
Lewis Gilbert3You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker

Roger Spottiswoode1Tomorrow Never Dies
Michael Apted1The World Is Not Enough
Lee Tamahori1Die Another Day
Marc Forster1Quantum of Solace
Cary Joji Fukunaga1No Time to Die

The directors line up with the actors in a few clear patterns. Young directed the first two Connery films and Thunderball, Hamilton directed Connery's Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever and then Moore's first two, and Gilbert made You Only Live Twice before directing Moore in The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker. Glen directed Moore's last three films and both of Dalton's. Hunt directed only the one Bond film, with Lazenby.

Brosnan worked with four different directors in four films: Campbell, Roger Spottiswoode on Tomorrow Never Dies, Michael Apted on The World Is Not Enough and Lee Tamahori on Die Another Day. Craig had four directors across five films: Campbell, Marc Forster on Quantum of Solace, Sam Mendes on Skyfall and Spectre, and Fukunaga. Campbell is the only director to launch two different Bond actors, Brosnan and Craig.

Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli produced The World Is Not Enough, per Variety.

The two non EON films have their own crews. The 1967 Casino Royale credits five directors, Val Guest, Ken Hughes, John Huston, Joseph McGrath and Robert Parrish, and its producer, Charles K. Feldman, made it as a spoof from the rights to Ian Fleming's novel. Never Say Never Again was directed by Irvin Kershner.

The next film has its crew in place before its cast. Denis Villeneuve is directing, Steven Knight is writing, and Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing, per Screen Daily. Knight said on September 12, 2026 that his first draft of the screenplay was finished, per Variety. On the casting side, Variety first reported on May 14, 2026 that Nina Gold had been hired as casting director, but the studio statement did not confirm her role. No release date has been announced.

Who Returns and Who Is Recast in the Bond Films?

The roles that return most are M, Miss Moneypenny and Q, while the role recast most often is Felix Leiter, played by seven different actors across the EON films. Here is how the main supporting parts changed hands.

Bernard Lee played M from Dr. No through Moonraker. Robert Brown then took over for Octopussy, A View to a Kill, The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill, and Judi Dench played M in seven films from GoldenEye to Skyfall. Ralph Fiennes appears as Gareth Mallory in Skyfall and as M in Spectre and No Time to Die. See the M page for more.

Lois Maxwell played Miss Moneypenny from Dr. No to A View to a Kill, Caroline Bliss took the part in The Living Daylights, Samantha Bond played her from GoldenEye through Die Another Day, and Naomie Harris is credited as Eve in Skyfall before playing Moneypenny in Spectre and No Time to Die. Q passed from Desmond Llewelyn to John Cleese in Die Another Day, after Cleese had appeared as R in The World Is Not Enough, and then to Ben Whishaw in Skyfall. Llewelyn made his last of 17 Bond appearances in The World Is Not Enough, and he died in a car crash on December 19, 1999 at 85, per CBS News. See Miss Moneypenny and Q.

Felix Leiter is the clearest recast. Jack Lord, Cec Linder, Rik Van Nutter, Norman Burton, David Hedison, John Terry and Jeffrey Wright have all played him in the EON films, with Hedison returning in Licence to Kill after Live and Let Die and Wright playing him in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and No Time to Die. Bernie Casey played him in Never Say Never Again. See Felix Leiter.

Ernst Stavro Blofeld has four EON faces: Donald Pleasence, Telly Savalas, Charles Gray and Christoph Waltz, who played the role in Spectre and No Time to Die. Max von Sydow played him in Never Say Never Again. Richard Kiel played Jaws in The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker, and Jesper Christensen played Mr. White in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Spectre. Rory Kinnear's Tanner appears in four Craig films. See Ernst Stavro Blofeld and Jaws.

Desmond Llewelyn appeared opposite five of the six EON Bonds: Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton and Brosnan. Lois Maxwell appeared opposite three of them, and Judi Dench's seven films as M carry her across both the Brosnan and Craig eras. Seven actors played Felix Leiter across ten EON appearances, and Jeffrey Wright's three films are the longest run by one actor.

Charles Gray played Dikko Henderson in You Only Live Twice and Ernst Stavro Blofeld in Diamonds Are Forever, which is as close to a retcon as the pre Craig era gets. Joe Don Baker played Brad Whitaker in The Living Daylights and Jack Wade in GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies.
