Godzilla vs. Kong: Who Wins? Every Fight in the 2021 Film Explained

Godzilla wins the one-on-one fight in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), directed by Adam Wingard, and Kong then lands the finishing blow on Mechagodzilla with an axe that Godzilla powers up. That split is the most accurate answer to the question, because the film gives each Titan a different win: Godzilla takes the brawl in Hong Kong, while Kong destroys the machine that had just overpowered Godzilla. Everything below contains spoilers for the film, and for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire where noted.

The fights run in order: the Hong Kong fight, the Mechagodzilla reveal, Mechagodzilla vs. Kong, the ending, the rematch in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), and King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962). The final section is a marked opinion piece on which Titan is stronger. For the cast, credits and streaming details, the Godzilla vs. Kong film page has them.

Before the two Titans meet, Kong lives under Monarch's watch in a dome on Skull Island, while Godzilla attacks an Apex Cybernetics facility. The film opens five years after the earlier Titan battles, and Kong's closest bond is with Jia (Kaylee Hottle), a young deaf orphan who uses sign language to talk with him. That bond gives Kong a human link that Godzilla does not have in this film.

Apex's CEO, Walter Simmons (Demián Bichir), then recruits the Hollow Earth theorist Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård), who persuades Monarch to move Kong in search of a power source beneath the surface. Meanwhile, Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown) and her friends start investigating Apex. So, the human plot and the Titan plot run side by side before either monster has thrown a punch.

Godzilla wins the Hong Kong fight, since he gets the better of Kong and leaves him badly hurt. The route into the fight is worth following, because it explains why Kong arrives armed. Inside the Hollow Earth, the group finds a glowing axe made from a Godzilla dorsal plate, and Kong takes it. Godzilla then senses the Apex signal and heads for Hong Kong, and Kong follows him there, so the brawl begins on ground that Godzilla chose rather than anywhere Kong would have picked.

Hong Kong also sits at the center of the human plot. Madison Russell, Josh Valentine (Julian Dennison) and Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry) have followed their Apex investigation to the city, where they find a secret facility, so the humans uncover what the company has built while the two Titans fight above them. The axe is worth tracking, because a weapon made from Godzilla's own dorsal plate comes back in the final fight. For the full profiles, see Godzilla and Kong.

Mechagodzilla beats Godzilla because it is controlled through a link to the severed head of King Ghidorah, which lets Ghidorah's will take over the machine. Apex reveals the giant machine after Godzilla has already beaten Kong, and it kills Simmons before it overpowers Godzilla.

Mechagodzilla answers a simple question: what stops Godzilla? The film's answer is another Titan's will inside a machine body, and that gives the monster a clear mechanism instead of just a bigger set of teeth. You can read more on the machine at Mechagodzilla and on the head it is wired to at King Ghidorah.

In the film, Kong destroys Mechagodzilla, but he needs three kinds of help to do it, so the result is a team win rather than a clean one-on-one answer. Lind revives Kong with an electrical shock, Josh disrupts the machine's controls, and Godzilla powers up the axe with his atomic breath. Only then does Kong use the axe to destroy Mechagodzilla.

Think of a relay race where the last runner breaks the tape: Kong gets the finish, but three others carried the baton. The question of who wins between King Kong and Mechagodzilla therefore has a film answer (Kong, with help) and an open answer, because the film never shows Kong facing the machine alone. Godzilla, for his part, loses to Mechagodzilla before Kong joins in, which is the only time in this film that Godzilla is beaten.

Godzilla vs. Kong ends with the two Titans parting ways instead of fighting again, once Mechagodzilla is gone. With the machine destroyed and Simmons dead, Apex's scheme to control the Titans falls apart. Godzilla and Kong acknowledge each other, then Godzilla heads back to the ocean while Kong returns to the Hollow Earth.

The human characters regroup, and Monarch sets up an observation post in the Hollow Earth, the realm where Kong is now the ruler. Each Titan ends up in its own territory, and Monarch's work below the surface carries on from there. Over the credits you hear The Air That I Breathe by The Hollies. No, Godzilla has never lost a fight to Kong in the Monsterverse films: Godzilla wins in Hong Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and their short fight in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) ends with no winner. In the sequel, also directed by Adam Wingard, Godzilla soaks up radiation and then has a short fight with Kong before Mothra calms things down.

That means the only decisive result between the two is the Hong Kong brawl, and it goes to Godzilla. By the time the sequel ends, the Titans are fighting on the same side.

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) is not the first meeting; Toho's King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) is a separate film outside the Monsterverse. For the 2021 film, the answer is that Godzilla wins the Hong Kong fight and Kong finishes Mechagodzilla with Godzilla's help.

Godzilla is the stronger Titan in the Monsterverse, and that is opinion, not a canon fact. The evidence is spread across the films: Godzilla wins the Hong Kong brawl, he beats the MUTOs in Godzilla (2014), directed by Gareth Edwards, finishing the female with atomic breath before he collapses from exhaustion, and in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), directed by Michael Dougherty, a powered up blast kills King Ghidorah and the other Titans, Rodan among them, bow to him. Kong kills the giant Skullcrawler in Kong: Skull Island (2017), directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, but only with human help.

That being said, Kong has the better answer to problems. The rules for each Titan differ: Godzilla runs on energy, since he soaks up radiation in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and runs empty after a huge blast, while Kong runs on adaptation, with the axe, Trapper's glove and allies like Jia. So, Godzilla wins the fair fight and Kong wins the messy one. On Mechagodzilla against Kong alone, Godzilla lost to the machine, so Kong alone likely fares no better, but the film never shows it.

The next film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is listed on Legendary's page for March 26, 2027, and no source says whether the two Titans fight again, so any rematch talk stays speculation.
