Godzilla Monsterverse Profile: The King of the Monsters
Godzilla is an ancient predator and Titan who fights on screen in four Monsterverse films, from Godzilla (2014) to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). His first film was directed by Gareth Edwards, and he is alive as of the latest film. The next Monsterverse film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is slated for March 26, 2027.
Who Is Godzilla in the Monsterverse?
Godzilla is an ancient predator and a Titan, the word the Monsterverse films use for giant creatures such as Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan. He anchors the series that Legendary built around him and Kong. The secret organization Monarch, which studies these creatures, traces its founding to a 1954 nuclear test at Bikini Atoll that was secretly an attempt to kill a giant creature.
His first appearance is Godzilla (2014), directed by Gareth Edwards, a film that runs 123 minutes and grossed $529 million worldwide against a $160 million budget, according to The Numbers. Godzilla is a creature rather than a credited on screen role in the top billed cast. The American Society of Cinematographers reports that he was not built as a physical creature for the 2014 shoot.
The films give no official height or weight for Godzilla. They show his size against cities and landmarks, in fights set in Honolulu, San Francisco, Boston, Hong Kong and Rome.
Godzilla fights on screen in Godzilla (2014), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). Kong: Skull Island (2017) only points toward him through imagery in a post credit scene. Godzilla's Story Arc Across the Monsterverse FilmsSpoilers
Godzilla's arc runs from a hidden predator in Godzilla (2014) to the acknowledged king of the Titans in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), and then to a surface patrol in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024).
Godzilla (2014). After the Janjira plant collapse and the hatching of a winged MUTO, the Monarch scientists Dr. Ishiro Serizawa and Dr. Vivienne Graham explain that an ancient predator called Godzilla exists and that the MUTOs are his natural prey. The military plans to lure all the creatures out to sea and destroy them with nuclear warheads, but the female MUTO eats most of the warheads. Godzilla fights the MUTOs near Honolulu and follows them to San Francisco, where he kills the male MUTO, finishes the female with a blast of atomic breath and collapses from exhaustion. He wakes, walks back into the sea, and the media call him the King of the Monsters. The public hails him as a protector.
Kong: Skull Island (2017). Godzilla himself stays off screen here. In the post credit scene, Houston Brooks tells James Conrad and Mason Weaver that Kong is not the only king, and classified footage shows cave like images of creatures including Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). Directed by Michael Dougherty, this film brings Godzilla in after Emma Russell frees a three headed Titan in Antarctica. A military weapon seems to kill Godzilla while leaving that Titan unharmed, and Monarch names the creature King Ghidorah. Serizawa gives his life by setting off a nuclear device that restores Godzilla's strength. Godzilla and Ghidorah then fight in Boston, around Fenway Park, and a powered up Godzilla kills Ghidorah after Mothra passes him her energy. The surviving Titans, Rodan among them, bow to Godzilla as king. The credits show cave paintings of Godzilla fighting a Kong like creature.
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). Directed by Adam Wingard, the film has Godzilla attack an Apex Cybernetics facility for no clear reason. He heads for Hong Kong, Kong follows, and in their fight Godzilla gets the better of Kong and leaves him badly hurt. Apex then reveals Mechagodzilla, which takes on Ghidorah's will and overpowers Godzilla. Godzilla powers up an axe made from his own dorsal plate with atomic breath, Kong uses it to destroy Mechagodzilla, and the two Titans acknowledge each other and part ways.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). Some years later Godzilla patrols the surface and kills a Titan that attacks Rome. He soaks up radiation and has a short fight with Kong before Mothra calms him. The three Titans then go to Hollow Earth to face the Skar King's forces, and when the Skar King and Shimo escape to Rio de Janeiro and start a new ice age, Godzilla melts the ice with his atomic breath.
Godzilla's Allies and Rivals: Kong, Mothra, King Ghidorah and More
Godzilla's most important relationships are a wary rivalry with Kong, a tie to Mothra that ends in her sacrifice, and a run of enemies that stretches from the MUTOs to Mechagodzilla.
Kong. The two Titans meet in Godzilla vs. Kong, where Godzilla wins the Hong Kong fight and then stands beside Kong against Mechagodzilla. In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire they have a short fight before Mothra calms Godzilla, and they then go to Hollow Earth together. See Kong Monsterverse for his side of it.
Mothra. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Mothra gives up her life to pass her energy to Godzilla so that he can destroy Ghidorah. In The New Empire, Jia, the last known member of the Iwi tribe, awakens Mothra, who is worshipped by the Iwi, and she is the one who settles Godzilla. See Mothra Monsterverse for more.
King Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla. Ghidorah, called Monster Zero before Monarch names him, kills Dr. Graham after Emma Russell frees him, and Godzilla is the Titan who finally kills him. His severed head then becomes the link that pilots Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong, which is why a machine can take on Ghidorah's will. Mechagodzilla is a giant machine and not a second Godzilla. Read more on King Ghidorah Monsterverse and Mechagodzilla Monsterverse.
The MUTOs. In 2014 the male and female MUTOs are the creatures Godzilla is described as hunting, and he kills both.
The humans. Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, played by Ken Watanabe, is the Monarch scientist who explains Godzilla in 2014 and sacrifices himself for him in 2019 (Ishiro Serizawa Monsterverse). Madison Russell takes the Orca to Boston to lure the Titans in (Madison Russell Monsterverse). The organization behind them is covered at Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Shimo and the Skar King. These two are the rivals of The New Empire. Shimo is an ice breathing Titan forced to obey the Skar King, and the pair set off the Rio de Janeiro ice age that Godzilla ends. See Shimo Monsterverse and Skar King Monsterverse, and the wider roster at Monsterverse Titans.
Does Godzilla Die? His Fate and Current StatusSpoilers
No, Godzilla does not die in any Monsterverse film so far, and he is alive and resting in the Colosseum in Rome at the end of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024).
The films keep threatening otherwise. In 2014 he collapses from exhaustion among the ruins of San Francisco after killing the female MUTO, and the world briefly has reason to think the fight cost him everything, before he wakes and walks back into the sea. In 2019 a military weapon seems to kill him, and it takes Serizawa's nuclear device to restore his strength. In 2021 Mechagodzilla overpowers him, and Kong's axe, charged by Godzilla's own atomic breath, ends the machine instead. Each time he returns, which is a reasonable thing to expect of a character whose title in the series is King of the Monsters.
The New Empire ends with Godzilla melting the ice with his atomic breath and going back to rest in the Colosseum, while Kong returns to Hollow Earth with Shimo and Suko. That leaves Godzilla as a ruler of the surface and Kong as leader of his tribe below.
What comes next? Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, directed by Grant Sputore and written by Dave Callaham, is slated for a US release on March 26, 2027, with Warner Bros. distributing, according to Legendary and Variety. Follow Godzilla x Kong Supernova for status updates, and see the Godzilla x Kong Supernova trailer page once footage is available.
Best Godzilla Moments in the Monsterverse, Ranked
The best Godzilla moment in the Monsterverse is the axe charge in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), where he powers up a weapon made from his own dorsal plate and Kong uses it to destroy Mechagodzilla. In my opinion it is the cleanest use of the series' rules: the atomic breath is something he can hand to someone else, and it takes both Titans to finish the machine.
Second, the Fenway Park fight in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Mothra passing her energy to Godzilla turns a monster brawl in Boston into a relay, and Serizawa's nuclear device earlier in the film sets it up. It could be argued that the Mothra sacrifice does more work for the ending than Godzilla himself does, but the blast that kills Ghidorah is still his.
Third, the San Francisco finish in Godzilla (2014). The atomic breath that ends the female MUTO is followed immediately by his collapse, and I think that cost is what makes it land: the blast is a finishing move that leaves him spent, not a free win. That is the same logic as the film's headline image, a creature too big to be built physically, as the ASC reports, being sold through consequences.
Fourth, the rest in the Colosseum at the end of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. It is a quiet beat after a loud film, and perhaps the most sensible way to close a stretch of the series in which he spends most of his time dealing with threats to cities.
One reading ties these together: radiation behaves like fuel for him. In 2014 the MUTO cocoon feeds on the plant's reactors, in 2019 a nuclear device restores Godzilla, and in 2024 he soaks up radiation before his short fight with Kong. None of the films states that as a rule, so treat it as my interpretation rather than canon.
