Who Is Kong in the MonsterVerse?

Kong is a giant ape Titan and the guardian of Skull Island in Legendary's MonsterVerse, first seen in Kong: Skull Island (2017), directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Skull Island is a South Pacific island that Bill Randa of Monarch persuades the government to survey in 1973, with a military escort. Kong has since led the franchise in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), both directed by Adam Wingard. Godzilla (2014), directed by Gareth Edwards, features no Kong appearance.

The MonsterVerse films call Kong a Titan, and kaiju is the genre term fans use for giant monsters. The word Titan becomes the public name for these creatures once they are known to the world in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), directed by Michael Dougherty. Kong sits in that group alongside the creatures on the MonsterVerse titans page.

The films give no official height or weight for Kong. Legendary has never published either figure, so his scale is shown through what he destroys and what has to contain him. In his first film he smashes an Army helicopter unit after seismic charges drop on his island, and by Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) Monarch keeps him inside a large dome on Skull Island.

Kong is protective of Skull Island and gentle toward those who do not threaten him. He guards his home and punishes what threatens it, yet the survivors in 2017 come to see his calmer side. In Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) he shares a close bond with Jia, a young deaf orphan who talks to him in sign language.

Kong is played through motion capture by Toby Kebbell and Terry Notary in Kong: Skull Island (2017). Those are the only performer credits attached to Kong for any of his films, and the later two films carry no separate credit for him.

His place in the series is easiest to see against the other leads. Godzilla is the force that arrives from the sea and returns to it, and Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah are creatures the humans react to. Kong is the Titan with a home, a territory and, by 2024, a tribe, which is why his three films read as one long move from a single island to a whole hidden world. For how his films sit alongside the rest of the series, see Monsterverse movies in order.

What Is Kong's Story Arc Across the Films?Spoilers

Kong's arc runs from guardian of Skull Island in Kong: Skull Island (2017) to leader of a tribe in Hollow Earth in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). Each film changes where he lives and who he answers to, and each one ends with him a little less alone.

In Kong: Skull Island (2017), Kong defends his island from a military survey and from the Skullcrawlers. The film opens in 1944, when a US pilot and a Japanese pilot crash on the island after a dogfight and are about to kill each other until the giant ape appears. In 1973, Bill Randa of Monarch gets funding for a survey and brings Lt. Col. Preston Packard's helicopter unit, the tracker James Conrad and the photographer Mason Weaver. The team drops seismic charges to test a theory about a hollow Earth, which provokes Kong, who smashes the helicopters and splits the survivors. Hank Marlow, a pilot stranded on the island for nearly 30 years, explains that Kong guards the island from the savage reptilian Skullcrawlers. Packard becomes obsessed with revenge and leads a plan to lure Kong to a lake and burn him with napalm. A giant Skullcrawler then rises from the lake, Kong kills Packard as he tries to detonate the charges, and Kong, with human help, kills the monster.

The production put real money behind that introduction: a budget of $185 million, and a worldwide gross of $569 million. Compare Godzilla (2014), which held its title creature back for long stretches of its 123 minutes. Kong: Skull Island (2017) shows its Titan in the opening scene and again within the first act, in a runtime of 118 minutes.

Kong is only hinted at in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). During the credits, cave paintings show Godzilla fighting a Kong-like creature and Titans gather at Skull Island. That sets up the crossover without putting Kong on screen. The 2017 post-credits scene had already done similar work: Conrad and Weaver are recruited by Monarch, Houston Brooks tells them that Kong is not the only king, and classified footage shows Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah.

In Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), Kong is moved from Monarch's dome to Hollow Earth and fights Godzilla before they team up against Mechagodzilla. Five years on from the earlier Titan battles, Kong lives under Monarch's watch inside the dome, with Jia as his closest companion. Nathan Lind, a Hollow Earth theorist, persuades Monarch to ship Kong toward an entrance in Antarctica to find a power source. Inside, the group finds a glowing axe made from a Godzilla dorsal plate, and Kong takes it. In Hong Kong, Godzilla gets the better of Kong and leaves him badly hurt. Lind revives him with an electrical shock, and Kong later uses the axe, powered by Godzilla's atomic breath, to destroy Mechagodzilla.

This film cost $155 million and earned $470 million worldwide. It was shot at Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland and on Oahu, with Tom Holkenborg scoring. Where the first film made Kong the last of a kind on a remote island, this one gives him a rival on equal terms for the first time.

In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), Kong finds a hidden tribe of apes and defeats the Skar King with Godzilla and Mothra. Kong lives alone in Hollow Earth, looking for any others of his species. He discovers a tribe that includes a young ape named Suko, ruled by the tyrannical Skar King, who uses a crystal to force the ice-breathing Titan Shimo to obey him. Shimo injures Kong's arm, and Trapper gives him a prototype glove that restores his strength. Suko destroys the control crystal with Kong's axe, which frees Shimo, and Shimo turns on the Skar King and freezes him before Kong shatters him.

The budget fell to $135 million while the worldwide gross rose to $572 million, the highest of the three Kong films. Across the trilogy, the scale of his world grows while the cost of making it drops, and his story changes from survival to leadership. Compare that with Godzilla's own path, which stays fixed on the surface and on the balance between Titans.

Who Are Kong's Allies and Enemies?

Kong's key relationships are with Jia, the deaf orphan who signs to him, and Godzilla, his rival turned uneasy partner, while his enemies change with each film.

Jia is Kong's closest human ally in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). In the first she is the one person who can calm him in Monarch's dome, and sign language is the film's way of showing that Kong understands more than he speaks. In the second she is the last known member of the Iwi tribe, and she chooses to stay with the Iwi at the end. Her profile is on the Jia page.

Other humans orbit that bond. Ilene Andrews, the Monarch scientist, travels with Kong in both films, and Ilene Andrews is the link between Monarch's caution and Kong's habits. Bernie Hayes, the podcaster, and Trapper, the Titan veterinarian, join the trip in The New Empire. Trapper gives Kong a prototype glove that restores his strength after Shimo injures his arm. In 2017, the human side is split: Conrad, Weaver and Marlow see that Kong is gentle toward those who do not threaten him, while Packard treats Kong as an enemy and is killed by him.

Kong and Godzilla go from rivals in Hong Kong to uneasy partners against Mechagodzilla and the Skar King. In Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) Godzilla wins the fight and leaves Kong badly hurt. Mechagodzilla, a giant machine piloted through a link to the severed head of King Ghidorah, then overpowers Godzilla and the two Titans fight on the same side. Godzilla powers up the axe with his atomic breath, Kong swings it, and they acknowledge each other and part ways. In The New Empire (2024), Godzilla soaks up radiation and has a short fight with Kong before Mothra calms him, and the three then go to Hollow Earth together. The pattern has softened: the first meeting needed a rematch to end, and the second needed only an interruption. For the matchup question, see Godzilla vs. Kong: who wins.

Mothra is worshipped by the Iwi and helps Kong in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). Jia awakens her, and she is the Titan who stops the second Kong and Godzilla fight. Her character page is Mothra.

Kong's enemies grow in scale from film to film. In Kong: Skull Island (2017) they are the Skullcrawlers, including a giant one that rises from the lake, and Packard's soldiers. In Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) the enemy is Mechagodzilla, built by Apex Cybernetics under Walter Simmons. In The New Empire the enemy is a ruler as much as a monster: the Skar King commands Shimo with a crystal, and Kong is the first Titan in the series to fight a tyrant that other Titans serve.

Does Kong Die? Fate and Current StatusSpoilers

Kong does not die in any of his three films and ends Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) as the leader of his tribe in Hollow Earth.

At the end of Kong: Skull Island (2017) he is the defender of his island, with the giant Skullcrawler dead and the survivors rescued. Kong watches them leave. At the end of Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), Mechagodzilla is destroyed and Walter Simmons is dead, so Apex's plan to control the Titans fails. Godzilla returns to the ocean and Kong returns to Hollow Earth, where Monarch builds an observation post.

The New Empire adds a family to that picture. Godzilla melts the ice with his atomic breath and goes back to rest in the Colosseum in Rome, Mothra restores the barrier that protects the Iwi, and Kong returns to Hollow Earth with Shimo and Suko, taking his place as leader of his tribe. Marketing for the film dropped Mothra, which TheWrap reported after the release, so her part in Kong's ending was a late surprise for audiences.

Compared with the other Titans, Kong's fate is the least final. In King of the Monsters (2019), Mothra gives up her life to pass her energy to Godzilla. In the 2014 film, Godzilla collapses and the public names him King of the Monsters. Kong is the one lead who finishes each film still on his feet.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is dated for a US release on March 26, 2027, and nothing published describes Kong's part in it. Legendary lists the film with Warner Bros. distributing, directed by Grant Sputore from a script by Dave Callaham. You can follow the latest on the Godzilla x Kong Supernova page.

What Are Kong's Best Moments?

Kong's best moments are the helicopter attack and the lake finale in Kong: Skull Island (2017), and the axe fight in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). This ranking is opinion, built on how each scene uses scale and rules.

The helicopter attack in Kong: Skull Island (2017) is Kong's best introduction. The seismic charges are a human act, and Kong's response is a direct answer: he swats the Army helicopters out of the sky and splits the survivors. The scene establishes the rule that Kong punishes what threatens his home. It also sets the film apart from Godzilla (2014), where Godzilla is withheld, because here the monster arrives in the first act and does the damage on screen.

The lake finale in Kong: Skull Island (2017) is the best payoff of that rule. Packard's men lure Kong to a lake and burn him with napalm. The giant Skullcrawler rises from the water, and Packard dies as he tries to detonate the charges. Kong then kills the monster with human help. Marlow has already explained that Kong guards the island from the Skullcrawlers, so the scene shows the cost of attacking the guardian: the thing he kept down comes up. Kong then watches the survivors leave.

The axe in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) is his best team up moment. The axe is made from a Godzilla dorsal plate, found in Hollow Earth. Godzilla powers it with his atomic breath, and Kong uses it to destroy Mechagodzilla. It is a small design idea that gives the two Titans a shared weapon without making either of them speak. The Hong Kong fight before it is the louder set piece, but the axe is the moment where the rivalry turns into cooperation.

A fourth moment is the arrival of the tribe in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). After two films of being the last of his kind, Kong discovers apes of his own species, including Suko, and finally has someone to protect. Shattering the Skar King is the bigger action beat, but the discovery is the one that changes who Kong is.
