Who Is General Zod in Superman?
General Zod is a Kryptonian general and criminal who is imprisoned in the Phantom Zone and later threatens Superman on Earth. He is credited as General Zod, and in the films his name is also shortened to Zod. Three films feature him: Superman (1978), directed by Richard Donner, Superman II (1980), directed by Richard Lester, and Man of Steel (2013), directed by Zack Snyder.
Two actors play General Zod: Terence Stamp opposite Christopher Reeve in Superman (1978) and Superman II, and Michael Shannon opposite Henry Cavill in Man of Steel (2013). The Reeve films treat Zod as a conqueror who gains powers under Earth's sun, while Man of Steel (2013) makes him a soldier fighting for the survival of his people.
Zod shares Superman's Kryptonian origin but wants to rule or remake Earth. If you are new to the character, think of him as someone who shares Superman's origins and none of his restraint. For the hero himself, see the Superman character page.

General Zod Across Superman (1978), Superman II and Man of Steel (2013)Spoilers
General Zod is sentenced to the Phantom Zone in Superman (1978), escapes to conquer Earth in Superman II (1980), and leads an invasion to rebuild Krypton in Man of Steel (2013). In Superman (1978), he is a prisoner almost immediately. Jor-El sentences General Zod and two followers to the Phantom Zone while Krypton's council ignores Jor-El's warning that the red sun will destroy the planet. Zod has a short, early appearance, but it plants the idea that Kryptonian criminals are still out there.
Superman II turns that setup into the main plot. A hydrogen bomb that Superman hurls into space breaks open the Phantom Zone and frees Zod, Ursa and Non. Under Earth's sun they gain powers equal to Superman's, take over the White House and demand that the world kneel to Zod. That answers a common question: yes, in this film Zod matches Superman power for power, which is why Superman needs a trick rather than a punch to win.
Man of Steel (2013) reboots the story. Zod kills Jor-El in a failed coup and is exiled to the Phantom Zone with his followers, then freed when Krypton is destroyed. He arrives at Earth and demands Clark Kent, because the genetic codex of the Kryptonian people is stored in Clark's cells. Zod wants a world engine to remake Earth into a new Krypton.
Is General Zod Related to Superman? Allies and Enemies
No, the films do not make General Zod a relative of Superman: he is a fellow Kryptonian and his sworn enemy. The link is shared origins rather than family. Marlon Brando plays Jor-El in Superman (1978), where he condemns Zod, and Russell Crowe plays Jor-El in Man of Steel (2013), where Zod kills him. See the Jor-El page for that side of the story.
Zod's allies change with the era. In Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980), Jack O'Halloran plays Non, and Sarah Douglas plays Ursa in Superman II. In Man of Steel (2013), Antje Traue plays Faora-Ul, a follower in Zod's crew. Superman II adds an unlikely partner: Lex Luthor, played by Gene Hackman, escapes prison with help from Eve Teschmacher, played by Valerie Perrine, and offers to lead the villains to Superman in return for Australia. For Luthor's other films, see Lex Luthor.
How Does Superman Defeat General Zod? What Happens to HimSpoilers
Superman defeats Zod by trickery in Superman II (1980) and by killing him in Man of Steel (2013), while Superman (1978) only sends him to the Phantom Zone. In that first film Jor-El sentences Zod and two followers to the Phantom Zone, and his part in the story ends there.
The Superman II finish is a bluff. Superman carries Zod, Ursa and Non back to the Fortress of Solitude and lures them into the crystal chamber that strips powers. Luthor explains the machine to the villains, but Superman has altered it beforehand, so only the three Kryptonians are affected. Zod ends up powerless and in custody.
Man of Steel (2013) ends his story for good. Over Metropolis, Superman wrecks the world engine, and the military turns the scout ship into a portal that returns the rest of Zod's crew to the Phantom Zone. Zod stays behind and turns on a threatened family, and Superman kills him to protect them. The act leaves Superman visibly shaken.
General Zod vs Superman: The Moments That Define Him
The scenes that define General Zod are the White House takeover in Superman II and the final fight in Man of Steel (2013). In Superman II (1980), the takeover and the demand that the world kneel before Zod show a villain who thinks of Earth as a prize. Terence Stamp plays it with cold authority, and the menace is not brute force but expectation: Zod assumes he is owed obedience.
In Man of Steel (2013), Zod wants the world engine to remake Earth into a new Krypton, and Superman destroys it over Metropolis. In my view, that is where Michael Shannon makes the case for Zod, because the character believes he is saving his people and the film lets him say so.
Why was Superman killing Zod controversial? Because Superman kills Zod to save a threatened family, which many fans see as out of character for a hero known for not killing. The film leaves him visibly shaken, and the debate lasts because Zod is sympathetic enough that his end feels like a loss rather than a relief. That is a view, and fans split on it.
