Who Are All the Superman Characters?
The main Superman characters are Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Perry White, Jimmy Olsen, Lana Lang, Supergirl and General Zod. Superman himself is known as Kal-El on Krypton and as the reporter Clark Kent on Earth. In Superman (1978), directed by Richard Donner, Christopher Reeve plays him opposite Margot Kidder as Lois Lane and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. Reeve returned for Superman II (Richard Lester), Superman III (Richard Lester) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (Sidney J. Furie). Brandon Routh took over in Superman Returns (Bryan Singer), and Henry Cavill played the role in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, all directed by Zack Snyder. David Corenswet is the current Superman in Superman (2025), directed by James Gunn, and he also appears in Supergirl (2026).
Who Are the Original Superman Characters?
The original Superman characters are the ones introduced in Superman (1978), and most of them became the template for later films. Marlon Brando plays Jor-El, who sends his infant son to Earth, and Susannah York plays Lara. Glenn Ford and Phyllis Thaxter play Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas. Jackie Cooper plays the Daily Planet editor Perry White, Ned Beatty plays Lex Luthor's henchman Otis, and Valerie Perrine plays Eve Teschmacher. Terence Stamp appears as General Zod, with Jack O'Halloran as Non. That core set of family, newsroom and villains is still the shape of the cast today.
Superman and His Family
Superman's family is Jor-El and Lara on Krypton, Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent on Earth, his cousin Kara Zor-El and his dog Krypto. Jor-El and Lara are played by Marlon Brando and Susannah York in Superman (1978), by Russell Crowe and Ayelet Zurer in Man of Steel, and by Bradley Cooper and Angela Sarafyan in Superman (2025). On Earth, Jonathan Kent is Glenn Ford in Superman (1978) and Kevin Costner in Man of Steel, while Martha Kent is Phyllis Thaxter, Eva Marie Saint and Diane Lane across the eras. For the full profiles, see Jor-El and the Superman character page.
Two more family members matter now. Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, appears in Superman (2025) and leads Supergirl (2026), where Milly Alcock plays her, with David Krumholtz as her father Zor-El and Emily Beecham as her mother Alura In-Ze. Krypto, Superman's dog, is in both films. In Supergirl (2026) he is hit by a poisoned dart early on, and Kara sets out to find the antidote. Read more on Supergirl and Krypto.
Who Are Some of Superman's Friends?
Superman's closest friends are the people at the Daily Planet in Metropolis. Lois Lane is the reporter at the center of every era, played by Margot Kidder, Kate Bosworth, Amy Adams and Rachel Brosnahan. Jimmy Olsen is the young colleague, played by Marc McClure, Sam Huntington and Skyler Gisondo. Perry White is the editor, played by Jackie Cooper, Frank Langella and Laurence Fishburne.
Outside the newsroom, Lana Lang is the old Smallville friend Clark meets again at a reunion in Superman III, played by Annette O'Toole in that film and by Jadin Gould in Man of Steel. In Superman (2025), the Justice Gang adds allies: Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.
What Are Superman's Nicknames?
Superman's names are Kal-El, Clark Kent and Superman; Man of Steel and Man of Tomorrow are also the titles of two films. Kal-El is his birth name on Krypton, Clark Kent is his name on Earth, and Superman is the name the public gives him. The films are Man of Steel (2013) and Man of Tomorrow, which is scheduled for July 9, 2027, according to ABC News. The cast lists credit him as Clark Kent / Superman, Superman / Clark Kent or Clark Kent / Kal-El depending on the film, so searches for his names usually point to the same person.
Lex Luthor and the Villains
Lex Luthor is the recurring human villain, played by Gene Hackman in three Reeve films, Kevin Spacey in Superman Returns, Jesse Eisenberg in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Nicholas Hoult in Superman (2025). Superman III uses a different antagonist in the tycoon Ross Webster, played by Robert Vaughn, with Richard Pryor as the programmer Gus Gorman. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace brings back Lex Luthor alongside his nephew Lenny, played by Jon Cryer, and Mark Pillow as Nuclear Man.
General Zod is the Kryptonian threat. Terence Stamp plays him in Superman (1978) and Superman II, where Sarah Douglas plays Ursa and Jack O'Halloran plays Non. Michael Shannon plays him in Man of Steel, with Antje Traue as Faora-Ul. In Superman (2025), Lex Luthor works with an ally called the Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), and Sara Sampaio plays Eve Teschmacher.
Who Are the Superman Characters in Superman (2025)?
Superman (2025) features Superman (David Corenswet), Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, the Engineer and Eve Teschmacher, along with Jor-El (Bradley Cooper) and Lara (Angela Sarafyan). Alan Tudyk is credited as Gary, and Krypto is the dog at Superman's side. The follow-up, Man of Tomorrow, is scheduled for July 9, 2027, according to ABC News. For that film's status, see the Man of Tomorrow page.
How the Characters Change From Film to Film
The same characters are written differently in each era, and the clearest way to see it is to follow Jor-El, Lois, Lex and Zod through specific scenes.
Jor-El. In Superman (1978), Marlon Brando's Jor-El is a hologram in the Fortress of Solitude that trains Clark for twelve years, and his warning not to interfere with human history is the rule Superman breaks when he flies around the Earth to turn back time. Superman Returns credits Brando as Jor-El in archive footage, and the film ends with Superman repeating Jor-El's words to Jason. Man of Steel gives Russell Crowe a double role: he is the scientist killed by Zod, and the artificial intelligence in the buried scout ship who explains Clark's origins. Superman (2025) turns the father figure into a problem. The damaged message from Jor-El and Lara survives only in part, and when Lex Luthor broadcasts the full version, it urges Superman to rule Earth and repopulate Krypton. In my opinion, that is the sharpest rewrite of any family role in the series, because Jonathan Kent's line that his own choices define who he is answers the message directly.
Lois Lane. Margot Kidder's Lois is first seen being rescued from a helicopter accident, and her article gives the hero his name. In Superman II she works out the secret herself at Niagara Falls, and the film ends with a kiss that wipes her memory. Kate Bosworth's Lois in Superman Returns has moved on, with a son named Jason and a Pulitzer for an article arguing that the world does not need Superman. Amy Adams chooses to protect his identity in Man of Steel. Rachel Brosnahan's Lois in Superman (2025) is the first to interview him and argue with him about whether his intervention in Boravia was legal and ethical, and she later helps Jimmy Olsen expose Luthor. Across the films she shifts from rescued witness to investigator, and that is my reading of the pattern rather than a stated aim of the filmmakers.
Lex Luthor. Gene Hackman's Luthor in Superman (1978) plans to sink the western United States by hitting the San Andreas Fault with a missile, and his henchman Otis sends a second missile toward New Jersey by mistake. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace has Lenny Luthor free his uncle from prison, and Lex steals a strand of Superman's hair to build Nuclear Man. Kevin Spacey's Luthor in Superman Returns grows a new landmass in the Atlantic from stolen Kryptonian crystals. Jesse Eisenberg plays a young tech billionaire who pushes a senator to let him import kryptonite and bombs a Senate hearing. Nicholas Hoult's Luthor in Superman (2025) admits that he staged the Boravia conflict out of envy. The trend runs from real estate schemes to public relations, and Superman (2025) is the first film in which Luthor wins through public opinion before he loses in a fight.
General Zod. Terence Stamp's Zod is sentenced to the Phantom Zone in the opening minutes of Superman (1978), then freed in Superman II by the hydrogen bomb Superman throws into space. Stamp's Zod takes over the White House and demands that the world kneel. Superman beats him by changing the crystal chamber so that only Zod, Ursa and Non lose their powers. Michael Shannon's Zod in Man of Steel wants a world engine to remake Earth into a new Krypton, and Clark kills him to save a threatened family. Man of Steel and Superman II share a villain but end the fight in opposite ways: one outwits Zod, the other cannot.
Production context. The cast lists show how much the production side shaped the characters. John Williams composed the score for Superman (1978), according to TMDB credits, while Superman II and Superman III were scored by Ken Thorne. Man of Steel used Illinois locations, with Plano standing in for Smallville and Willis Tower as the Daily Planet, according to ReelChicago. Superman Returns was shot in Sydney and north-west New South Wales, and the ABC reported in 2005 that it was the largest film shot in Australia. Reading these choices next to the characters, the Kents of Man of Steel feel rural and weathered in a way that matches the Kansas look of Superman (1978), while Metropolis shifts from studio city to real skyline.
