Jor-El Superman: Who He Is and Who Plays Him

Jor-El is Superman's father on Krypton, the scientist who sends his infant son Kal-El to Earth, and he is played by Marlon Brando in Superman (1978), Russell Crowe in Man of Steel (2013) and Bradley Cooper in Superman (2025). Brando also returns through archive footage in Superman Returns, so four films share one character and three actors.

Who Is Jor-El in the Superman Movies?

Jor-El is the Kryptonian scientist who fathers Superman and sends him to Earth as the infant Kal-El. He appears in four films, from Superman (1978), directed by Richard Donner, to Superman (2025), directed by James Gunn. In Superman (1978) he is Krypton's leading scientist, and he sentences General Zod and two followers to the Phantom Zone. He then warns the council that Krypton's red sun will destroy the planet, but they ignore him. He and his wife Lara send their infant son to Earth in a small ship, and the baby lands near Smallville, Kansas, where Jonathan and Martha Kent find him and raise him as Clark.

Which actor plays him? Marlon Brando plays Jor-El in Superman (1978) and appears again as archive footage in Superman Returns (2006), directed by Bryan Singer. Russell Crowe plays the role in Man of Steel (2013), directed by Zack Snyder. Bradley Cooper plays him in Superman (2025), and the film credits Angela Sarafyan as Lara.

Is Jor-El Superman's dad? He is the biological father, while Jonathan Kent is the adoptive father who raises Clark in Kansas. The only alternate form of the name in the credits is the Superman Returns listing, "Jor-El (archive footage)". Kal-El is the name of his son rather than an alias, and Man of Steel (2013) credits its lead as Clark Kent / Kal-El.

How Does Jor-El's Story Change Across the Superman Films?Spoilers

Jor-El appears in all four films as a voice that Superman obeys, argues with or inherits, but he is physically present only in the Krypton scenes. In Superman (1978), a green crystal from the baby's ship calls Clark to the Arctic after Jonathan Kent dies of a heart attack. The Fortress of Solitude forms there, and a hologram of Jor-El trains him for twelve years. At the climax, Superman ignores Jor-El's warning not to interfere with human history, flies around the Earth to turn back time and saves Lois Lane.

Superman Returns uses Brando's earlier footage rather than a new performance. Near the end, Superman visits Lois's son Jason and repeats to the boy the words that Jor-El once spoke to him, which passes the message down a generation.

Man of Steel (2013) gives Jor-El the most active role. He sends Kal-El off with the genetic codex of the Kryptonian people, and General Zod murders him in a failed coup. As an adult, Clark finds a buried Kryptonian scout ship in the Arctic, where an artificial intelligence modelled on Jor-El explains his origins and gives him a suit. Zod later learns that the codex is stored in Clark's cells, which turns Jor-El's final act into the reason for the film's conflict.

Superman (2025) makes the message itself the plot. Only the first half of a damaged recording from Jor-El and Lara survives at the Fortress. The full message is recovered and Luthor broadcasts it. In it, Superman's birth parents urge him to rule Earth and repopulate Krypton, and public opinion turns against him. The recording says Jor-El and Lara wanted Superman to rule Earth, and Superman rejects that through his own choices. Jonathan Kent tells him at the Kent farm that his own decisions define who he is.

Who Is Jor-El Connected To?

Jor-El's closest bond is with his son, and his other ties are with Lara, General Zod and the Kents. Lara is his wife and Kal-El's mother, played by Susannah York in Superman (1978), Ayelet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van in Man of Steel (2013) and Angela Sarafyan in Superman (2025). In Superman (1978) the two of them send the infant to Earth together, while in Man of Steel (2013) it is Jor-El who sends Kal-El off, and in Superman (2025) they are the voices on the recorded message.

General Zod is the enemy who defines him. Terence Stamp plays Zod in Superman (1978), where Jor-El sentences him to the Phantom Zone, and Michael Shannon plays him in Man of Steel (2013), where Zod kills Jor-El in a failed coup and is exiled with his followers.

Jonathan and Martha Kent are the counterweight, the adoptive parents who raise Kal-El as Clark in Smallville, Kansas. Where Jor-El shapes Superman through a hologram, an AI or a recording, the Kents shape him in person, and the films often set one influence against the other. For the two men who use or answer Jor-El's legacy, see the general zod superman and lex luthor superman pages.

What Happens to Jor-El?Spoilers

Jor-El dies when General Zod murders him in Man of Steel (2013), and in the other films he survives only as a hologram, archive footage or a recorded message. Krypton is later destroyed, so the version of Jor-El that speaks to adult Clark in Man of Steel (2013) is a machine built in his image. Superman (1978) frames his story around the planet's coming end and shows him as a hologram teaching his son in the Fortress of Solitude.

Superman Returns keeps him alive only through Brando's earlier footage, and Superman (2025) keeps him alive only through the recorded message that Luthor broadcasts. Is Jor-El a bad guy in the Superman movies? In every film he tries to save his son, and the one place his intent is disputed is the message in Superman (2025), where Superman, not Jor-El, has the last word.

Best Jor-El Moments in the Superman Movies

The best Jor-El moment, in my opinion, is the twelve years of hologram training in Superman (1978), because it gives the Fortress of Solitude a purpose beyond a hiding place. The scene also sets up the finale, where Superman breaks Jor-El's rule against changing human history to save Lois, and the film turns a father's advice into a choice his son makes alone.

The second pick is the Man of Steel (2013) scene in the buried scout ship, where Crowe's Jor-El appears as an AI and hands over the suit. It works because Jor-El has already been killed, so the exposition arrives with a loss attached.

The boldest pick is the broadcast in Superman (2025), because the film turns a loving father's farewell into a weapon, and Jonathan Kent's line about choices is the answer to it. The quietest moment is the closing beat of Superman Returns, where Superman repeats Jor-El's words to Jason, because it shows the legacy being handed on rather than obeyed.
