In the ending of Supergirl (2026), Kara kills Krem, takes the antidote to save Krypto, and returns to Earth to reunite with Superman in Metropolis. Before she leaves, Kara asks Ruthye to stay for the rest of her birthday week, so the revenge plot closes first and the franchise plot second.
The killing is the scene that decides how the film reads. Kara tells Ruthye that killing Krem will not take away her pain, Ruthye walks away, and Kara then kills Krem herself with his own sword. In my reading, that is the film's sharpest choice: Kara earlier stopped Ruthye from killing Krem on Bilquis, and Krem answered by murdering the husband and his family. Her speech on the Brigands' ship carries that guilt, so the kill is less a betrayal of her argument than an admission that mercy had already cost lives. That is opinion, and the film does not spell it out.
The Barenton sequence sets up the farewell. The green sun strips Kara's powers and Ruthye nurses her, which reverses their roles from Holzherr. The invitation to finish the birthday week repays that debt, and it lets Ruthye leave the story with a choice of her own after Kara took her revenge from her.
The final scene is the franchise link. Kara tells Superman she wants to stay and calls Earth her home, which sets her up to appear alongside him in later DC Universe films. Superman (1978) opened the release order as a main entry; Supergirl (2026) is the eighth film and the first spin-off, and it ends by handing back to the main line, with David Corenswet's Superman from Superman (2025) waiting at the apartment. That being said, the next confirmed film in the series is Man of Tomorrow, set for July 9, 2027, so any shared appearance remains a setup, not a promise.
The production history adds context. DC Studios took over post production after a late 2025 test screening, and the released cut is 11 minutes shorter than Craig Gillespie's version, according to Wikipedia. What those minutes contained has not been published, so the pacing of the final act cannot be tied to any specific cut.
Supergirl (2026) has no post credit scene; the Metropolis reunion is the last story beat. If you stayed in your seat for a stinger, there was none to find.
