Bellatrix Lestrange: Who She Is, Who Plays Her and What Happens to Her
Bellatrix Lestrange is a Death Eater loyal to Lord Voldemort, played by Helena Bonham Carter in four of the eight main Harry Potter films, from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011).
Who Plays Bellatrix Lestrange?
Who Is Bellatrix Lestrange?
Bellatrix Lestrange is a Death Eater, one of the followers of the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, and Helena Bonham Carter plays her in all four of her films. The credits use the single name Bellatrix Lestrange throughout, so there are no alternate names to track across the saga.
Her first film is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), directed by David Yates, where Bonham Carter is billed fifth. Yates also directed her three later films, which gives the character one consistent director in a saga that changed directors several times. By then the story had already established the threat she serves: Voldemort's spirit survives at the end of the first film, and he is brought back to a body at the close of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, when Wormtail uses Harry's blood and Voldemort summons his followers in a graveyard. Bellatrix arrives in the saga just after that, as the Ministry of Magic is still refusing to accept that he has returned.
The billing is a small clue to how prominent she is. In Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 she is billed fifth, ahead of Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort, who is billed eighth and seventh respectively. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince she is billed thirteenth, and in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 eighth, with Fiennes fourth. That final film took $1.31 billion worldwide according to The Numbers, so her last appearance is also her most widely seen.
How does she fit among the other adult villains? Quirrell, Lucius Malfoy and the disguised Barty Crouch Junior each belong to one or two films, while Bellatrix is the Death Eater who stays with the story from the Ministry battle to the last battle at Hogwarts. If you want to see where those four films sit in the saga, our Harry Potter movies in order guide lays them out, and the full list of people is on the Harry Potter characters page.

Bellatrix Lestrange's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers
Bellatrix's arc runs through four films, and in three of them she is the Death Eater who turns a threat into a personal loss for Harry.
In Order of the Phoenix, her escape from Azkaban is part of the wider return of Voldemort's followers. The film follows Dolores Umbridge taking over Hogwarts, Dumbledore's Army forming in secret, and Snape teaching Harry Occlumency, and Bellatrix sits outside all of that as the danger the Ministry will not admit exists. Harry sees a vision of Sirius in danger and travels with his friends to the Ministry of Magic to retrieve a prophecy, and Death Eaters ambush them there. In that battle she kills Sirius Black, her first major act of violence against someone close to Harry. The aftermath matters as much as the duel: Fudge finally admits Voldemort is back, and Dumbledore explains the prophecy.
Half-Blood Prince is her quietest film. The story concentrates on the secret task given to Draco Malfoy and on Snape's promise to Draco's mother that he will protect her son, while Bonham Carter appears in the supporting cast. Death Eaters attack London and later enter Hogwarts through a cabinet Draco repaired, so the film keeps her side of the war in view even when she is not at its center.
She returns in force in Deathly Hallows: Part 1. After Snatchers capture Harry, Ron and Hermione, they are taken to Malfoy Manor, where Bellatrix tortures Hermione Granger. Dobby appears and frees the prisoners, and Bellatrix fatally wounds him as they escape. Dobby dies at Shell Cottage, and Harry buries him by hand.
In Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the trio break into her vault at Gringotts and find Helga Hufflepuff's cup, a Horcrux, which shows that Voldemort kept something of his own in her vault. Griphook takes the sword and leaves them, so they free the vault's dragon and escape on its back. The cup is later destroyed with a Basilisk fang, and Bellatrix is killed in the last battle. Read together, the four films give her a clear shape: arrival, absence, cruelty and an ending that answers the loss of Sirius and Dobby.
Bellatrix Lestrange's Relationships: Voldemort, Sirius, Hermione and Draco
The films define Bellatrix mostly through her loyalty to Voldemort and through the people she harms.
Her link to Lord Voldemort is allegiance. She is a Death Eater, and the Horcrux in her Gringotts vault in Deathly Hallows: Part 2 shows how far he relies on her.
Is Bellatrix Voldemort's wife? No. In the four films she appears in, she is his follower, and nothing in their plots presents a marriage between them. Her husband is not a character in the film plots, so the screen version of Bellatrix is defined by her service to Voldemort rather than by a household.
Did Voldemort impregnate Bellatrix? Nothing in the four films shows or mentions a pregnancy or a child of Bellatrix and Voldemort. The films keep their relationship to master and follower, and I would treat any claim beyond that as fan speculation rather than something on screen.
Why did Bellatrix Lestrange love Voldemort? The films never give a reason in so many words, and they do not stage it as romance. What they show is devotion: she serves him after his return in the Goblet of Fire graveyard, she fights for him at the Ministry, and she guards a Horcrux for him at Gringotts. In my opinion, it is best read as fanatical loyalty, which fits the way Bonham Carter plays her.
Her link to Sirius Black is violent and one-sided. She kills him during the Ministry battle in Order of the Phoenix, a scene that sets her against Gary Oldman's Sirius.
Her other significant relationship is with Hermione Granger, played by Emma Watson, whom she tortures at Malfoy Manor in Deathly Hallows: Part 1. She also appears alongside Draco Malfoy, whose Malfoy Manor home is where the trio are held, and whose mother Snape promises to protect in Half-Blood Prince.
Why is Bellatrix's last name Lestrange and not Black? The credits give her only as Bellatrix Lestrange, and the films never show a maiden name on screen. In the family sense, Lestrange is the name she is known by in all four films. The spin-off films use the surname for a different character, Leta Lestrange in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, played by Zoë Kravitz, and nothing in those plots links the two women.
What is Bellatrix Lestrange's wand made of? The films do not state the wood or core of her wand in anything recorded for the saga, and the credits list no wand details. Ollivander, played by John Hurt, appears in the first film and in Deathly Hallows: Part 2, but the plots do not have him describe her wand. Any specific wood you may have seen quoted comes from outside the films.
Who Kills Bellatrix Lestrange?Spoilers
Molly Weasley kills Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, released in the US on 15 July 2011.
It happens in the final battle for Hogwarts, after Professor McGonagall has driven Snape out and the school has prepared for Voldemort's army. Ron and Hermione have by then destroyed the cup Horcrux that Bellatrix's vault held, and Harry has destroyed Ravenclaw's diadem in the Room of Requirement. Harry has also walked into the Forbidden Forest and returned, which is why the fighting at the school is still undecided when Molly steps in. Neville Longbottom kills Nagini with the Sword of Gryffindor, and Harry's own disarming spell sends Voldemort's curse back at him.
Who kills Bellatrix, and why does it feel earned? Molly is a mother defending her family, and Bellatrix is the Death Eater who took Sirius from Harry and wounded Dobby. It could be argued that no one else in the film would close her arc as neatly.
Her death fits the pattern of her appearances. In three of her four films she is tied to a major death: she kills Sirius, she fatally wounds Dobby, and she is finally killed by Molly Weasley. Her fate also keeps the data simple for anyone tracking the saga: she is gone before the epilogue, nineteen years later at King's Cross, where Harry, Ginny, Ron, Hermione and Draco watch their children board the Hogwarts Express.
Bellatrix Lestrange's Best Moments (Opinion)
In my opinion, the strongest Bellatrix scenes are the ones where Bonham Carter is given room to be unpredictable rather than simply cruel.
The Malfoy Manor interrogation in Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is, it could be argued, her finest sequence. It is a contained set piece with no chase and no creature effects, so the menace has to come from the performance and from the contrast with Emma Watson's Hermione. It also answers a question the earlier films only raised, which is what Voldemort's most devoted follower is capable of. Dobby's arrival cuts the scene short, and his death afterward gives the sequence its weight.
The Ministry battle in Order of the Phoenix is her most consequential scene, since it is where she changes Harry's life directly, and it explains why his hatred of her feels earned. It also arrives in a film with a crowded ensemble, so her fifth billing makes sense. Compared with the Death Eaters in Half-Blood Prince, who work through a cabinet and a plan, she is an open threat.
The Gringotts vault in Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is the lightest of the three. Its interest lies less in Bellatrix herself than in what her vault contains, and the escape on the dragon is the bigger memory. That being said, the Horcrux inside it shows how much Voldemort relies on her.
If you only have time for two films, I would pick Deathly Hallows: Part 1 for the performance and Order of the Phoenix for the stakes. Both are easy to find on our where to watch Harry Potter page.
