What Are the Harry Potter Movies?

The Harry Potter movies are eight films released between November 16, 2001 and July 15, 2011, followed by three Fantastic Beasts spin-offs released from 2016 to 2022, which gives the Harry Potter franchise 11 theatrical films in all. Every one of them draws on the wizarding world created by J. K. Rowling, and the main saga follows Harry Potter from his eleventh birthday through his years at Hogwarts.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001), directed by Chris Columbus, introduces Harry as an orphan who sleeps in a cupboard under the stairs at his aunt and uncle's house. On his eleventh birthday the giant Hagrid turns up and tells him that he is a wizard, famous for surviving an attack by the dark wizard Voldemort as a baby. A shopping trip through a hidden London street gets Harry his wand, and the Hogwarts Express then carries him to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he meets Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

Four directors shaped the series. Columbus made the first two films, Alfonso Cuarón directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Mike Newell took Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), and David Yates directed the last four Harry Potter films before going on to direct all three Fantastic Beasts films. The music changed hands almost as often: John Williams scored the first three films, Patrick Doyle the fourth, Nicholas Hooper the fifth and sixth, and Alexandre Desplat both Deathly Hallows films. The Harry Potter soundtrack guide covers the composers in more detail. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson lead the cast of all eight Harry Potter films, and the Harry Potter cast guide lists the supporting players.

The money involved is considerable. According to Box Office Mojo and The Numbers, the eleven films grossed about $9.64 billion worldwide combined. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) earned the most at $1.31 billion, while Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore earned the least of the eleven at $407 million. Budgets ran from $100 million for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets to $250 million for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and running times range from 130 minutes for Deathly Hallows: Part 2 to 161 minutes for Chamber of Secrets. Every figure by film sits in the Harry Potter box office guide.

The Fantastic Beasts films step back in time. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), directed by David Yates, follows the British magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) in 1926 New York, where a swapped case lets some of his creatures loose in the city. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) moves to 1927 and a hunt for Credence Barebone, and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022) has Dumbledore quietly assemble a team around Newt as Grindelwald gathers power.

Harry Potter Movies in Order: Release or Chronological?

The simplest way to watch the Harry Potter movies in order is by release date, which starts with Sorcerer's Stone in 2001, finishes the main saga with Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011, and then adds the three Fantastic Beasts films. The full explanation, with context for each film, is in Harry Potter movies in order.

Release order

  1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
  2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
  3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
  4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
  5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
  6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
  7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010)
  8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)
  9. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
  10. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
  11. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)

Chronological order

The chronological order differs in one respect only: the three Fantastic Beasts films move to the front, because Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set in 1926 and The Crimes of Grindelwald in 1927. After those three, the eight Harry Potter films follow in their release order.

Which order suits you? In my opinion, release order is the better first watch, with the Fantastic Beasts films kept for last, partly because the casting changed along the way, with Jude Law as Dumbledore and Mads Mikkelsen replacing Johnny Depp as Grindelwald for the third film. Viewers who want the story strictly in sequence can use the second list, and the Harry Potter timeline explains how the eras connect.

Is There a New Harry Potter Movie Coming?

No new Harry Potter film has been announced, and the next Harry Potter release is the HBO television series, which is reported to premiere on December 25, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max. Collider reports that Season 1 runs eight episodes and adapts the first book. The date is reported rather than confirmed, since one article still carries a stray reference to 2027.

The date has moved earlier. Variety reported a 2027 window in July 2025, when filming began at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the same UK lot where the films were shot, and by April 2026 the first teaser confirmed a December 2026 premiere, according to The Hollywood Reporter India. The series plans one season per book across seven seasons, with an entirely new cast. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry, Arabella Stanton plays Hermione and Alastair Stout plays Ron, with John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid. Warwick Davis, who played Filius Flitwick in the films, is also listed as Flitwick.

Behind the camera, Francesca Gardiner is showrunner and Mark Mylod, known for Succession, directs multiple episodes. J. K. Rowling and David Heyman, a producer of the films, are executive producers, and HBO announced in January 2026 that Hans Zimmer and Bleeding Fingers will compose the score. Season 2, adapting Chamber of Secrets, was renewed in May 2026 before Season 1 aired, with Kit Harington listed as Gilderoy Lockhart, and it has no release date yet.

One rumor has been answered directly. A March 2026 report that Cillian Murphy had been cast as Voldemort was denied, with Murphy saying he is categorically not in the series (Deadline).
