Ruffnut and Tuffnut: How to Train Your Dragon Twins

Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston are the fraternal twin sister and brother among the teenage Vikings of Berk who join the dragon training class in How to Train Your Dragon (2010). That film was directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, and it is where the twins first appear alongside Astrid, Snotlout and Fishlegs, the riders who gather around Hiccup.

If you are wondering which one is the girl twin, the answer is simple: Ruffnut is the sister and Tuffnut is the brother. People search for "Ruffnut and Tuffnut boy or girl" because the names sound so alike, and the credits settle it.

Kristen Wiig voices Ruffnut and T.J. Miller voices Tuffnut in How to Train Your Dragon (2010) and How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014). Both also voice the twins in the 22 minute short Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury. The films credit them as Ruffnut and Tuffnut in live action and as Ruffnut (voice) and Tuffnut (voice) in the animated films.

The voice cast changed once. Justin Rupple voices Tuffnut in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), while Kristen Wiig keeps Ruffnut. Rupple also voices Tuffnut in the 2019 holiday special How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming, which aired on NBC as a TV special and is not a feature film.

Searches for the twins also turn up Dragons: Race to the Edge and a character called Snuffnut. Neither appears in the cast lists of the four feature films or the two shorts, so this profile covers the twins as they are credited in those films only.

Ruffnut and Tuffnut go from dragon training classmates in How to Train Your Dragon (2010) to full members of Hiccup's riders in every later film. Their path follows the rest of the group, from the training ring to the biggest battles.

In How to Train Your Dragon (2010), Hiccup becomes the star of the training class by using kindness in place of force. After Toothless is captured during his final exam, Stoick sails with the fleet to find the dragons' nest, and Hiccup frees Toothless and rallies his friends to ride the training dragons into the fight against the Red Death. The twins are among those friends, and the battle is the point where they stop being students and become riders.

In How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), directed by Dean DeBlois, Hiccup and Toothless are charting unexplored lands five years after peace came to Berk. The twins are credited among the riders, and the warlord Drago Bludvist captures Astrid and the other riders before attacking the hidden ice sanctuary with a Bewilderbeast of his own.

In How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), Berk is crowded and under constant attack from hunters. The twins are among the riders who use wingsuits to strike back at Grimmel and free Toothless, and they stand with the Berkians when the dragons are released.

How to Train Your Dragon (2025), again directed by DeBlois, retells the first story with Bronwyn James as Ruffnut and Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut. The arc is the same: classmates first, then riders who join Hiccup in the final fight.

Ruffnut and Tuffnut are closest to each other, and the films present them as a pair. Beyond that, their circle on Berk is Hiccup, Astrid, Snotlout and Fishlegs.

So, who does Ruffnut end up with? None of the plots for the four feature films from 2010 to 2025 pairs her with anyone. Romance in those films belongs to Hiccup and Astrid, who begin a romance in How to Train Your Dragon (2025) and marry in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019).

No film pairs Fishlegs and Ruffnut as a couple. Fishlegs appears as a fellow rider, voiced by Christopher Mintz-Plasse in the animated films and played by Julian Dennison in 2025, and no plot describes a marriage between the two.

Ruffnut and Tuffnut survive every feature film, and none of the four plots shows either twin dying. In the 2010 and 2025 films, they ride out the final battle with the other teens as Berk and the dragons settle into life together.

That also answers a common search: no scene in the plots of the four feature films shows Tuffnut faking his death. He is credited in each of them, as Tuffnut (voice) in the animated films and as Tuffnut in 2025.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) is the closest the saga comes to a goodbye. Hiccup and Toothless agree that dragons will only be safe if humans keep away, so the Berkians release their dragons. The plot does not follow the twins separately at that point, and the epilogue ten years later is built around Hiccup, Astrid, Toothless and the Light Fury.

The live action How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2027) is dated for a US release on June 11, 2027. Dean DeBlois writes and directs it, and Cate Blanchett joins as Valka.

The twins' best moment is the finale of How to Train Your Dragon (2010), when Hiccup rallies the riders and the training class becomes a team. They are among the riders who take the training dragons into the battle against the Red Death, and in my opinion it is the clearest case of the twins working best inside a larger set piece rather than a long speech.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) uses them differently. Drago captures Astrid and the other riders, so the group spends part of the middle of the film as prisoners rather than as the confident team of the first film. The cast list reflects the same ensemble role: Tuffnut is billed eighth and Ruffnut ninth, behind Hiccup, Valka, Stoick, Gobber, Astrid, Snotlout and Fishlegs.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) gives them a more useful role. The wingsuit strike against Grimmel puts the whole ensemble in the air together, and the twins are part of the group that helps free Toothless. Comparing the three animated features, this is the one where the riders act most as a unit. The credits also show the one change in the pair: Justin Rupple, billed eleventh, voices Tuffnut, while Kristen Wiig is billed ninth as Ruffnut.

How to Train Your Dragon (2025) runs 125 minutes, against 98 for the 2010 film, and Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn perform the pair in live action, where the animated voices of Kristen Wiig and T.J. Miller were the point of reference. Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the 2010 film and directed the 2014 and 2019 sequels, directs this version, and John Powell returns as composer, so the story beats the twins play in are kept intact. If you want the twins at their loudest, start with the 2010 original.
