Astrid How to Train Your Dragon: Who She Is and Who Plays Her

Astrid Hofferson is a young Viking of Berk and Hiccup's classmate, voiced by America Ferrera in the animated films and played by Nico Parker in the live action How to Train Your Dragon (2025), directed by Dean DeBlois. She first appears in How to Train Your Dragon (2010), directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, and appears in each of the four feature films.

The credits use more than one form of her name. The animated feature films credit Ferrera as Astrid (voice), the live action film credits Parker as Astrid, and the short Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury (2011) credits Ferrera as Astrid Hofferson (voice). So, if you are searching for the actress or the voice actor, the table shows who performs her in each feature film and how the credit reads.

In the first film she is one of the teenagers who joins Hiccup in the village dragon fighting class, alongside Snotlout, Fishlegs, Ruffnut and Tuffnut. Ferrera also voices her in two shorts, Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury (2011) and the NBC holiday special How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (2019), which is based on the DreamWorks Animation film trilogy. Ferrera is billed second in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), up from fourth in 2010. For the lineup around her, see the full cast list.

Astrid goes from a suspicious dragon training classmate in How to Train Your Dragon (2010) to Hiccup's wife and a chieftain of New Berk by the end of the animated trilogy. The live action remake then reshapes how her closeness to Hiccup begins.

In How to Train Your Dragon (2010), Astrid grows suspicious when Hiccup suddenly excels in the training class, where he uses kindness in place of force. Toothless then shows her and Hiccup the hidden nest where the dragons live, and Astrid and Hiccup see the giant Red Death that forces the others to bring it food. That discovery leaves the two of them sharing the secret of the nest.

By How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), she is an established partner in Hiccup's explorations rather than a classmate. The film is set five years after the Vikings of Berk made peace with dragons, and Hiccup and Astrid are exploring together when they find a burnt forest and are captured by trappers who work for the warlord Drago Bludvist. Later, Drago captures Astrid and the other riders before he attacks the ice sanctuary run by Valka.

In How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), Hiccup has been chief for a year and Berk is crowded with rescued dragons. Hiccup and Astrid are the two who find the Hidden World itself, where Toothless is now alpha and the Light Fury is his mate. Later the riders, Astrid among them, use wingsuits to strike back and free Toothless from the hunter Grimmel. By the close of that story she goes from partner to spouse: Hiccup and Astrid marry months after the dragons are released, and they become chieftains of New Berk.

The live action How to Train Your Dragon (2025) retells the first film with Nico Parker in the role. Here Astrid follows Hiccup, discovers his secret and is won over after a flight with Toothless, and the two then find the dragons' hidden nest together. At the end of that film Astrid and Hiccup begin a romance.

Astrid's most important relationship is with Hiccup, whom she goes from classmate to exploring partner to wife. The other riders and the adults of Berk fill out the rest of her circle.

With Hiccup, the later films show the two leading as a pair. In How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) they find the dragon refuge together, and in the epilogue of that film they arrive there with their children. Her tie to Toothless is a separate matter. In the live action How to Train Your Dragon (2025), a flight with Toothless is what turns her suspicion into trust, so that bond is the hinge of her loyalty to Hiccup.

Among her peers are Fishlegs, Snotlout and the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut, who share her dragon training class in How to Train Your Dragon (2010) and later ride beside her. Among the adults, Gobber joins Hiccup and Astrid in planning the Snoggletog pageant in How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (2019), and Stoick is the chief of Berk in How to Train Your Dragon (2010). Valka enters her world in How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), when Astrid and the other riders are captured during Drago's attack on the sanctuary.

Her opponents shape her story too. Drago Bludvist captures her in How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), and Grimmel hunts the dragons she helps protect in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). The Light Fury is the dragon she and Hiccup find living beside Toothless in that same film. For the wider ensemble, see the full list of main characters.

Astrid survives every film, marries Hiccup after the events of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), and becomes a chieftain of New Berk beside him. The ending of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) places their marriage months after Hiccup lets the dragons go.

Ten years after The Hidden World (2019), Hiccup and Astrid visit Toothless and the Light Fury with their children, and the two dragons have three hybrid young. Hiccup vows that dragons will stay hidden until the two species can live together in peace. DreamWorks places How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (2019) ten years after The Hidden World, just before the epilogue of the final film, and it shows Astrid helping Hiccup and Gobber organize a holiday pageant for a new generation of Vikings who have forgotten the link between dragons and humans.

The live action version has not reached that point. How to Train Your Dragon (2025) ends with the romance beginning and with dragons living alongside the villagers. The live action How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2027) is dated for June 11, 2027, in the United States, and How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2027) is in production. Astrid's best moments are the flight with Toothless in How to Train Your Dragon (2025), the Red Death nest discovery in How to Train Your Dragon (2010), and the refuge arrival in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). These are opinion picks, and the order is a matter of taste.

The pick here is the live action flight in How to Train Your Dragon (2025), where Astrid follows Hiccup, discovers his secret and is won over after riding with Toothless. In my reading, it gives her a clearer reason to change sides than the animated film, where the shift comes through her growing suspicion. If you want the full comparison, the live action versus animated comparison sets the two versions side by side.

A close second is the animated nest discovery in How to Train Your Dragon (2010), when Toothless shows her and Hiccup the Red Death. It could be argued that this is the moment the series stops being about one boy and one dragon and starts being about a group of friends sharing a secret.

Third is the moment in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) when she and Hiccup arrive at the dragon refuge. It pays off the hunt for the Hidden World with two people who have been through captures and battles together. The wingsuit strike against Grimmel is the bigger set piece, but, perhaps, the refuge is where the couple feels earned.

Last, the epilogue visit in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) shows Astrid as a parent, visiting Toothless and the Light Fury alongside Hiccup and their children.
