Who Is Vesper Lynd in James Bond?
Vesper Lynd is a Treasury agent who accompanies James Bond to the high stakes poker game at the Casino Royale in Montenegro in the film casino royale (2006), directed by Martin Campbell. Eva Green plays her opposite Daniel Craig, and she is billed second in the cast. Vesper carries the buy in, which makes her Bond's minder as much as his partner at the table. MI6 stakes Bond in the game after he earns his 00 status in Prague and stops an attack on a prototype airliner at Miami airport, and Vesper is the government's eyes on its money.
Casino Royale (1967), a non EON spoof, is her first screen appearance, with Ursula Andress as a Vesper Lynd recruited by Sir James Bond. Casino Royale (2006) is her version in the 25 film EON series. Unless the 1967 film is named, Vesper means the Green version throughout.
Casino Royale (2006) had its UK premiere on 16 November 2006 (a reported date) and its US release on 17 November 2006. Casino Royale (1967) had its UK premiere on 23 April 1967 (a reported date) and its US release on 28 April 1967. The 1967 film was made by producer Charles K. Feldman, who owned the rights to Ian Fleming's novel, and it was shot as a spoof, separate from the official series.

Vesper Lynd's Story Arc Across the Bond FilmsSpoilers
Vesper's arc in Casino Royale (2006) takes her from the Treasury's minder at the card table to the woman whose loss Bond carries through three more films. In Montenegro Bond burns through his stake until CIA agent Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) bankrolls him, and the winning hand is his. Afterward Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), the subject of our le chiffre james bond profile, abducts Vesper and beats Bond for the account password. Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) then shoots Le Chiffre and leaves the two of them alive.
Bond heals, quits MI6 and imagines a future with her. When the winnings disappear, he reads it as her doing. The chase ends in Venice (covered in the fate section), and M (Judi Dench) later explains that Vesper was a double agent under duress, protecting the man she loved.
After Casino Royale (2006), Vesper returns only as a memory: in Quantum of Solace (2008), Spectre (2015) and No Time to Die (2021). She does not appear in person in any of them, and the cast lists show her only in the two Casino Royale films.
The film quantum of solace (2008), directed by Marc Forster, opens with Bond bringing in Mr. White, a member of the secret group behind her death. It closes with Bond dropping Vesper's necklace in the snow as he puts her betrayal behind him.
Spectre (2015) picks up the thread through Mr. White, described as a former Quantum member. Madeleine Swann says the organization behind Bond's earlier enemies is called Spectre.
The film no time to die (2021), directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, has Bond visit Vesper's grave in Italy, where a bomb goes off and assassins attack. He comes to believe Madeleine set him up.
In the 1967 film, Vesper is one of the agents recruited to play a James Bond so that SMERSH cannot tell who the real one is. She rescues the baccarat expert Evelyn Tremble after he beats Le Chiffre at cards and is captured, but she later shoots him. The finale is a wild battle that ends with the casino blowing up.
Vesper Lynd and James Bond: The Relationship
Vesper's key relationship is with James Bond (Daniel Craig), who falls for her during Casino Royale (2006) and believes she betrayed him. It moves from professional friction to a planned future: she arrives as the Treasury's watcher, he resigns from MI6 after the poker game, and he plans a life with her. The film's ending then explains that her betrayal came from coercion rather than choice, as M tells it.
Le Chiffre is the pressure on both of them. He is a banker who handles money for terrorists, he organizes the poker game to win back a fortune lost to Bond's Miami success, and he kidnaps Vesper and tortures Bond for the password. Mr. White is the larger shadow behind that scene. He kills Le Chiffre and lets the pair live.
M, played by Judi Dench, is the other voice in her story. M sends Bond to the table, and afterward M is the one who tells him why Vesper acted as she did. Felix Leiter, played by Jeffrey Wright, has a smaller link: he is the CIA agent who stakes Bond with more money when Bond is out of the game.
In Casino Royale (1967), her ties run to Sir James Bond, played by David Niven, who recruits her, and to Evelyn Tremble, played by Peter Sellers, whom she rescues and later shoots. Orson Welles plays Le Chiffre in that film.
How Did Vesper Lynd Die?Spoilers
Vesper Lynd drowns in Venice at the close of Casino Royale (2006), shut inside a cage lift as the building around her sinks into the canal. Bond had followed her there once the winnings were gone, and gunmen had cornered her in that crumbling house. Mr. White slips away with the money.
Afterward M tells Bond that Vesper was pressed into working as a double agent to protect the man she loved, and that she most likely gave up the money to buy his life. Bond returns to duty, tracks Mr. White to an estate on Lake Como, shoots him in the leg and gives his name.
Her death carries into the later films. Quantum of Solace (2008) ends with Bond dropping her necklace in the snow, and No Time to Die (2021) places her grave in Italy at the start of its story.
Vesper Lynd's Best Moments, Ranked by What They Change
Vesper's best moment is the Venice ending of Casino Royale (2006), followed by the necklace in Quantum of Solace (2008) and the grave in No Time to Die (2021). That is my ranking, and the reasons follow.
First, the ending. Bond believes she betrayed him, M reframes her as a coerced double agent, and Bond walks to Lake Como and shoots Mr. White in the leg. In my opinion this is where the cold, committed agent of the series is finished. Few of the earlier films let a loss reshape the lead like that. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) kills Bond's wife Tracy at the end, but Casino Royale makes the grief the engine of a whole run of films.
Second, the necklace in the snow at the end of Quantum of Solace. It is a quiet beat in a film that is mostly about chase and revenge, and it is where Bond lets go of the betrayal.
Third, the grave in No Time to Die. The film uses it to set up Bond's suspicion of Madeleine, which echoes how he felt about Vesper. The shadow is also a problem: Bond leaves Madeleine on a train because of it, and in my view the echo is heavy handed for a film this long.
If you are new to the character, start with Casino Royale (2006). It was shot across the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and Pinewood Studios, and it gives Eva Green a role with a clear start, middle and end. The 1967 film is a curiosity worth watching once you know the official version.
