Who Is Madison Russell in the Monsterverse?

Madison Russell is the Monsterverse character played by Millie Bobby Brown. She is the teenage daughter of Emma Russell and Mark Russell, and she appears in two films. She first appears in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), directed by Michael Dougherty, where Brown is billed third. She returns in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), directed by Adam Wingard, where Brown is billed fifth. She does not appear in Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island or Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, whose top fifteen credited casts do not list her.

We first meet her at a remote Monarch base with her mother, where Madison watches a new Mothra hatch. Emma is the scientist who uses the Orca, a Monarch sound device, to calm the creature. Her parents are estranged, and her father Mark blames Godzilla for the death of the family's son.

Her name on screen is Madison Russell, and the actress is credited as Millie Bobby Brown.

Madison Russell's Story Arc: From the Orca to Hong KongSpoilers

Madison Russell is kidnapped with her mother in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, turns against Emma's plan, and lures the Titans to Boston with the Orca; in Godzilla vs. Kong she investigates Apex Cybernetics. In the first film, mercenaries led by Alan Jonah raid the Monarch base and take both Emma and Madison, along with the Orca. Monarch's Ishiro Serizawa and Vivienne Graham recruit Mark to track the kidnappers, and the trail leads to Antarctica.

The central question for Madison is why her mother does what she does. In Antarctica, Emma frees a three-headed Titan known as Monster Zero, who kills Vivienne Graham and flies away. Emma argues that waking the other Titans will heal the planet, and she releases more of them, including Rodan. Madison turns against that plan. After Ishiro Serizawa gives his life by setting off a nuclear device that restores Godzilla's strength, Madison takes the Orca to Boston to lure the Titans in. The creature Monarch has named King Ghidorah follows her to Fenway Park, where Godzilla and King Ghidorah fight in the city.

In Godzilla vs. Kong, the film follows Madison through the Apex investigation instead. Godzilla attacks an Apex Cybernetics site, and the company's boss Walter Simmons says that humans need a way to stop the Titans. Madison looks into Apex alongside Josh Valentine and Bernie Hayes, and the trio ends up in Hong Kong, where they find a secret facility. That discovery runs in parallel with the Hollow Earth expedition, and Apex then reveals Mechagodzilla, a giant machine piloted through a link to the severed head of King Ghidorah.

Madison Russell's Relationships: Emma, Mark, Bernie and Josh

Madison Russell's closest relationships are with her mother Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) and father Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler) in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and with Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry) and Josh Valentine (Julian Dennison) in Godzilla vs. Kong. Emma is the scientist who uses the Orca to calm Mothra and is the reason Madison is dragged into the kidnapping. Mark is Emma's ex-husband and Madison's father, and his own arc is followed in the profile of Mark Russell.

In Godzilla vs. Kong, her circle widens. Bernie and Josh work with her to look into Apex. Bernie also returns in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, where Bernie Hayes travels with the Monarch team. That film also features Jia, the deaf orphan who communicates with Kong through sign language, and Ilene Andrews, the Monarch scientist. Madison and Jia are not shown sharing a scene, so Jia's storyline runs in parallel rather than as a relationship.

As for the Titans, her bond with Godzilla is indirect. She uses the Orca to draw the Titans toward Boston, and she works alongside Monarch scientists, but no scene shows her communicating directly with Godzilla.

What Happens to Madison Russell? Fate and Death QuestionSpoilers

Madison Russell does not die in Godzilla: King of the Monsters or Godzilla vs. Kong; her mother Emma Russell is the Russell who dies in the first film. At the end of the first film, Emma stays at the Orca to distract King Ghidorah while her family escapes, and Emma dies in the blast when Godzilla destroys King Ghidorah with a powerful atomic pulse. That is the usual source of the "madison russell death" search.

In Godzilla vs. Kong, Madison is part of the group that helps stop Apex. Josh Valentine disrupts Mechagodzilla's controls, Dr. Nathan Lind revives Kong with an electrical shock, and Kong uses the glowing axe, powered by Godzilla's atomic breath, to destroy the machine. Walter Simmons is dead and Apex's plan fails. The film ends on Godzilla and Kong parting ways rather than on Madison, and she is not credited in the top fifteen of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, so her status after that film is open.

The sequence around the Godzilla and King Ghidorah fight runs like this: Madison takes the Orca to Boston and lures the Titans in, King Ghidorah follows her to Fenway Park, Godzilla destroys King Ghidorah, and the surviving Titans, Rodan among them, bow to Godzilla as ruler.

Madison Russell's Best Moments, Ranked by Callan

Madison Russell's best moment is the Fenway Park sequence in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, where she uses the Orca to lure King Ghidorah to Boston. In my opinion, it is the most useful thing a human character does in the whole saga, because the Orca works like a lure and King Ghidorah follows it to the ballpark, which gives Godzilla a place to meet him.

Second, I would pick her break with her mother. Emma believes waking the Titans will heal the planet, Madison disagrees, and the film lets that argument carry the human side of the story while the monsters do the rest. For a creature feature, that is a fairly clear emotional rule: the Titans are forces, and the Russells are the ones deciding how to use them.

Third, I would pick the Hong Kong facility discovery in Godzilla vs. Kong. It is a smaller beat, and Madison is sidelined next to the Kong and Godzilla fight, but it is where her investigation with Josh and Bernie leads, and Apex then reveals Mechagodzilla. It gives the human plot some weight.

The Kong and Godzilla fight itself plays out in Godzilla vs. Kong, and the creatures behind both films are the Monsterverse Titans.

Facts

FAQs

Who plays Madison Russell in the Monsterverse?

Millie Bobby Brown plays Madison Russell in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). She is billed third in the first film and fifth in the second.

What happens to Madison Russell in Godzilla: King of the Monsters?

Madison Russell is kidnapped with her mother Emma, turns against Emma's plan to free the Titans, and takes the Orca to Boston. That answers what happened to Madison in Godzilla: she lures the Titans toward Fenway Park while Godzilla and King Ghidorah fight, and the surviving Titans bow to Godzilla afterward. She does not appear in the 2014 Godzilla.

What happened to Madison Russell in Godzilla vs. Kong?

In Godzilla vs. Kong, Madison investigates Apex Cybernetics with Josh Valentine and Bernie Hayes. The trio ends up in Hong Kong, where they find a secret facility. Apex then reveals Mechagodzilla, which Kong destroys with a glowing axe powered by Godzilla's atomic breath.

Why did Madison smile at Godzilla?

Neither Godzilla: King of the Monsters nor Godzilla vs. Kong has a scene where Madison smiles at Godzilla or communicates with him directly. What connects them is the Orca: she takes it to Boston and lures King Ghidorah to Fenway Park, which gives Godzilla the place to fight him, and the Titans bow to Godzilla once he wins. In my opinion, any smile a viewer remembers reads as relief or gratitude that her plan worked, but that is an interpretation of the scene and not a stated fact of the film.

Why did Emma Russell release King Ghidorah?

Emma Russell releases King Ghidorah because she believes waking the Titans will heal the planet. She frees the three-headed Titan known as Monster Zero in Antarctica, and Monarch later names it King Ghidorah. Madison opposes this plan, and Emma dies in the final battle after staying with the Orca to buy time for her family.

Will Madison Russell return to the Monsterverse?

No return has been reported. Madison is not among the top fifteen cast of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is due March 26, 2027.
