Who Is Linus Caldwell in Ocean's Eleven?

Linus Caldwell is the pickpocket in the crew of eleven that Danny Ocean and Rusty Ryan assemble for the Las Vegas vault job in Ocean's Eleven (2001), directed by Steven Soderbergh. Matt Damon plays him in Ocean's Eleven (2001), Ocean's Twelve (2004) and Ocean's Thirteen (2007), billed fourth in each.

In the first film, Danny walks out of a New Jersey prison and starts planning a robbery of three casinos owned by Terry Benedict, who is dating Danny's ex-wife Tess. Rusty helps him recruit a team of specialists. Linus is the crew's pickpocket and works close to Terry Benedict while the rest of the team builds a vault replica and rehearses.

No Ocean's film gives Linus Caldwell's age. The films credit him only as Linus Caldwell; he has no alternate name. For the full ensemble around him, see the Ocean's Eleven characters page, and for the people on screen, the Ocean's Eleven cast page.

Linus Caldwell's Story Arc Across Three FilmsSpoilers

Linus Caldwell's arc runs from crew pickpocket in Ocean's Eleven (2001) to the son of an FBI agent in Ocean's Twelve (2004) and the crew member who works Willy Bank's assistant Abigail Sponder in Ocean's Thirteen (2007).

In Ocean's Eleven (2001), the crew plans the robbery for the night of a big boxing match, when the vault holds its most cash. Linus works close to Benedict. On the night, the crew knocks out power across the city with a device that creates an electromagnetic pulse, and members dressed as a SWAT team enter the vault and bag the cash. Benedict's security staff watch a looped recording of the vault, so he believes it is still guarded while the real money is carried out. Benedict later has Danny arrested for violating parole, but the cash had already been swapped out, so he finds nothing.

In Ocean's Twelve (2004), Benedict tracks down all eleven men and gives them two weeks to repay the money with interest. The crew heads to Europe, and the story adds a detail about Linus: his mother, an FBI agent, helps get the crew freed after most of them end up in custody.

In Ocean's Thirteen (2007), the crew sets out to ruin the opening of Willy Bank's new Las Vegas hotel after Bank cheats Reuben Tishkoff out of his share. Linus gets close to Bank's assistant Abigail Sponder to reach the diamonds. Benedict, whom the crew needs for funding after their drilling equipment fails, secretly hires a thief to grab the stones first. The diamonds turn out to be a decoy, because Danny foresaw the double cross.

Who Are Linus Caldwell's Parents and Closest Allies?

The only parent the films identify is Linus's mother, an FBI agent who appears in the plot of Ocean's Twelve and helps free the crew. Ocean's Thirteen credits Bob Einstein as Agent Caldwell, a name that matches Linus's, but the published plot outline does not describe how that character relates to him, and no film outline names his father.

His working relationships are clearer. Danny Ocean leads every job, and Linus answers to him as one of the specialists. Rusty Ryan helps Danny Ocean recruit the team that includes Linus. Each of those characters has a page on the site, including Danny Ocean and Rusty Ryan.

On the other side of the heists sits Terry Benedict, the casino owner Linus works close to in the first film. Benedict is dating Tess Ocean, Danny's ex-wife, which is why the vault job is personal. In the third film the target changes to Willy Bank, played by Al Pacino, and Linus's contact there is Bank's assistant Abigail Sponder, played by Ellen Barkin.

The rest of the crew across the three films is Basher Tarr, Frank Catton, Reuben Tishkoff, Saul Bloom, Livingston Dell, Yen, Virgil Malloy and Turk Malloy.

What Happens to Linus Caldwell at the End?Spoilers

Linus Caldwell survives Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen and is free at the end of the trilogy.

At the end of Ocean's Eleven, Terry Benedict has Danny jailed on a parole violation, but the crew is nowhere to be found with the money, so Benedict has no proof and no cash. Danny is let out, Rusty and Tess Ocean pick him up, and the film closes with the gang gathered in front of the Bellagio fountain. In Ocean's Twelve, Linus's mother helps free the crew, and the debt to Benedict is settled once François Toulour loses his bet and pays. Reuben Tishkoff then returns the money. In Ocean's Thirteen, the rigged casino pays out heavily, Willy Bank's opening is ruined, Reuben is given a casino of his own, and Terry Benedict is publicly credited with a large donation he never meant to make.

The trilogy leaves Linus as a free member of a wealthy crew. A prequel to Ocean's Eleven led by Margot Robbie and set in 1962 is scheduled for June 25, 2027.

Linus Caldwell's Best Moments, Ranked by Technique

Linus Caldwell's three best moments are his pickpocket work near Terry Benedict in Ocean's Eleven, his mother's rescue of the crew in Ocean's Twelve, and his approach to Abigail Sponder in Ocean's Thirteen. This ranking is my opinion.

First is the pickpocket work in the original film, because it shows the job as a sequence of steps rather than a stunt. The crew has a vault replica to rehearse on, the power cut is timed to the boxing match, and Linus is the one working close to the target while the plan runs.

Second is the moment in Ocean's Twelve when his mother, an FBI agent, helps free the crew. The Europe jobs have fallen apart by then, and it is the one beat in the trilogy where a family connection decides the outcome. Compared with Toulour's Fabergé egg bet in Ocean's Twelve (the Night Fox wagers Danny that he can reach the egg first), it is small, but it is the one that gets the crew out.

Third comes Ocean's Thirteen, where Linus works Bank's assistant Abigail Sponder while Benedict plots a double cross. The payoff belongs to Danny's decoy diamonds, so Linus's part is the setup rather than the finish. If you are new to the series and want one Linus film, start with Ocean's Eleven, then follow the Ocean's Eleven movies in order to see how his role changes.
