Back to back, that is 601 minutes, a little over ten hours.
Ocean's Eleven (1960) is a Las Vegas heist film in which Frank Sinatra's Danny Ocean leads a crew of Second World War veterans from the same airborne unit. Their plan is to rob five casinos (the Sahara, Riviera, Desert Inn, Sands and Flamingo) at the same moment on New Year's Eve. The job is run like a military operation, with some of the crew taking jobs inside the casinos, one driving a garbage truck and another performing in a hotel lounge. Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford fill out the billing, and Nelson Riddle wrote the score.
Ocean's Eleven (2001), directed by Steven Soderbergh, begins the modern Danny Ocean saga. George Clooney plays Danny, paroled from a New Jersey prison and already planning a vault job in Las Vegas. He recruits Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt), and together they build a team of specialists that includes a pickpocket, a demolitions expert, a card dealer and an acrobat. The target is a vault shared by three casinos owned by Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), who is now dating Danny's ex-wife Tess (Julia Roberts). Timing is the engine here: the plan is set for a big boxing match night, when the vault holds the most cash.
Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen keep Soderbergh in the chair and most of the ensemble in place. Ocean's Twelve sends the crew across Europe after Benedict demands his money back, and adds Catherine Zeta-Jones as the Europol detective Isabel Lahiri. Ocean's Thirteen returns to Las Vegas, where Al Pacino plays the hotel developer Willy Bank and the crew sets out to wreck his grand opening.
Ocean's Eight, directed by Gary Ross, arrives last, with Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean and a Met Gala necklace job in New York.
About the Chronological Order
No, the Ocean's Eleven chronological order is the same as the release order: Ocean's Eleven (1960), Ocean's Eleven (2001), Ocean's Twelve, Ocean's Thirteen and Ocean's Eight. There is no reshuffling to do, and each later film continues from the one before it as the story moves forward from 2001 to Ocean's Eight.
The link between the first three Soderbergh films is direct. Ocean's Twelve opens with Terry Benedict tracking down all eleven members of Danny Ocean's old crew and demanding the money they took from him, with interest, within two weeks. Ocean's Thirteen then follows Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould), who is pushed out of a casino deal by Willy Bank and falls gravely ill, which pulls Danny's crew back together for revenge. Ocean's Eight is fifth in story order and is tied to the saga by family, since Debbie Ocean is the sister of the late Danny Ocean, and Reuben appears again.
So, is Ocean's Eight connected to Ocean's Eleven? Yes, through Debbie, through Danny's name and through Reuben, even though the cast is almost entirely new. The 1960 film is a separate case. Its Danny Ocean is played by Frank Sinatra, with a different set of characters, so it works as the origin of the title and the lead name rather than as the first chapter of the Clooney story. It is listed first because it is the earliest film, not because the later films continue its story.
One more film is on the way, and it changes the picture if the reports hold. Warner Bros. dated an untitled Ocean's Eleven prequel for June 25, 2027, according to Variety Australia. Monaco Life reported that Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper play Danny Ocean's parents in a heist set at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix, which would place it before every other entry in story order. That plot is a report, not a studio statement, and the full status sits on the untitled Ocean's Eleven prequel page. A separate TheWrap report about an Ocean's 14 with David Leitch directing is unconfirmed, and it cites an insider and credits The InSneider with the first report.
Where to Start With the Ocean's Movies
Start with Ocean's Eleven (2001), directed by Steven Soderbergh, because it introduces Danny Ocean, Rusty Ryan and Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon) and explains the heist before the crew runs it. It lays out the Las Vegas vault plan in clear steps, and a heist works like an engine: you want to see each part fitted before the machine starts.
Do you need to watch Ocean's Eleven before Ocean's Twelve? Watch Ocean's Eleven (2001) before Ocean's Twelve, because the whole film is Terry Benedict collecting a debt from the first job. Ocean's Thirteen is the most forgiving sequel for a newcomer, since its revenge story about Reuben and Willy Bank is easy to grasp, although the crew banter lands better once you know these people.
Ocean's Eleven (1960) works best as a companion after the Clooney films, so you can compare Sinatra's Danny Ocean and its five casino, New Year's Eve plan with the later boxing night vault. The 2001 film sets up its own story, with Danny paroled in New Jersey, so you lose nothing by starting there. Ocean's Eight works as a standalone heist, and it plays best after Ocean's Eleven (2001), so the Ocean family link and Reuben's return mean something.
For streaming, TMDB's JustWatch data, as of November 2, 2026, shows all five films on HBO Max with a subscription in the US and Australia. In the UK, Netflix carries Ocean's Eleven (2001), Ocean's Twelve, Ocean's Thirteen and Ocean's Eight, while Ocean's Eleven (1960) is rent or buy only. Availability changes, so check the service before you plan the weekend. The Soderbergh trio runs just over six hours, so queue Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen for one weekend, add Ocean's Eight for the next, and keep Ocean's Eleven (1960) for last. FAQs
How to watch Ocean's 11 in order?
The order is Ocean's Eleven (1960), Ocean's Eleven (2001), Ocean's Twelve (2004), Ocean's Thirteen (2007) and Ocean's Eight (2018), and that sequence is both the release order and the chronological order. If you want the modern story, start with the 2001 film and keep the 1960 original as a companion for last.
In what order should I watch the Ocean's movies?
Watch the Ocean's movies in release order: Ocean's Eleven (2001), Ocean's Twelve, Ocean's Thirteen and Ocean's Eight, with Ocean's Eleven (1960) as an optional companion. The three Steven Soderbergh films run in a straight line, and Ocean's Eight, directed by Gary Ross, follows them. The 1960 film, directed by Lewis Milestone, goes last.
Is Ocean's 8 connected to Ocean's 11?
Yes. In Ocean's Eight, Sandra Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, the sister of the late Danny Ocean, and Elliott Gould appears again as Reuben. The rest of the cast is new, and the heist at the Met Gala in New York is a self contained job, so the film stands on its own.
Do you need to watch Oceans 11 before 12?
Yes, watch Ocean's Eleven (2001) before Ocean's Twelve (2004), because Ocean's Twelve opens with Terry Benedict demanding back the money the crew took from him in the first film. The Europe heists and Isabel Lahiri's pursuit make more sense when you have seen what the crew took from Benedict in Ocean's Eleven.
Do I need to watch the 1960 Ocean's Eleven first?
No, Ocean's Eleven (2001) is a standalone start and the 1960 film by Lewis Milestone, with Frank Sinatra, works best as a companion afterwards. Its Danny Ocean and crew are different from the Clooney story, so you lose nothing by beginning with the 2001 film.
Is there a new Ocean's Eleven movie coming?
Yes, an untitled Ocean's Eleven prequel is dated by Warner Bros. for June 25, 2027, according to Variety Australia. Variety also reported in March 2026 that Bradley Cooper was in talks to write, direct and star, with Margot Robbie producing. The title and plot details are not officially confirmed by the studio.
