Ocean's Eight Plot: What the Film Is About

Ocean's Eight is a 2018 heist film in which Debbie Ocean, freshly out of prison, assembles an all-female crew to steal a Cartier necklace at the Met Gala.

Debbie is the sister of the late Danny Ocean, the character from the earlier Ocean's Eleven films, so the story borrows the family name and the habit of thinking big. After a long sentence she has spent those years planning one scheme, and she reunites with her old partner Lou (played by Cate Blanchett) to put it in motion. Together they recruit a crew of specialists: a fashion designer, a jeweler, a hacker, a pickpocket and a suburban fence. Each of them covers one stage of the job, much like a pit crew where every person owns a single tire.

The plan hinges on one awkward detail, because the necklace has to end up around the neck of the gala's famous host, the actress Daphne Kluger (played by Anne Hathaway). Getting a jewel onto a person who has no idea she is part of the plan is the engine of the whole film.

Ocean's Eight Full Plot: How the Met Gala Heist WorksSpoilers

Spoilers follow.

In Ocean's Eight, Debbie Ocean's crew steals the $150 million Toussaint necklace from Daphne Kluger at the Met Gala, frames Claude Becker, and secretly swaps the museum's royal jewels for fakes. The plot is easiest to follow as a sequence of steps, so that is how it is laid out here.

Step one, the target. Debbie Ocean walks out of prison and starts the job immediately. The prize is the Toussaint, a Cartier diamond necklace worth about $150 million, which will be worn at the Met Gala.

Step two, the crew. She brings in her old partner Lou, then builds the team: designer Rose Weil, jeweler Amita, hacker Nine Ball, pickpocket Constance and fence Tammy.

Step three, the delivery. Rose becomes the stylist for Daphne Kluger, the gala host, so that Daphne is the one who wears the necklace. Amita and Rose make a convincing replica, Tammy takes a job at Vogue, and Lou attends the gala in disguise to help from inside.

Step four, the night. Daphne is slipped something in her soup and leaves the room, which lets Constance lift the necklace. Amita breaks it into pieces that the crew smuggles out of the museum, and the replica is left behind so that nothing looks wrong.

Step five, the fall guy. Debbie also sets up Claude Becker, her former partner and ex-lover, to take the blame.

Step six, the complication. Daphne works out what happened and agrees to join the crew as the eighth member in return for a share. With Debbie, Lou, Rose, Amita, Nine Ball, Constance, Tammy and Daphne, the crew reaches eight. Insurance investigator John Frazier suspects Debbie, but her alibi holds up, and Becker is arrested once the stolen stones have been sold.

Step seven, the second theft. It then emerges that Lou and Yen also stole royal jewels on loan to the museum during the lockdown and swapped them for Amita's fakes, a haul worth more than the necklace. The crew splits up to enjoy their money and start new ventures, and Debbie visits Danny's grave and raises a martini to him.

Ocean's Eight Ending Explained: The Double TheftSpoilers

Spoilers follow.

In the ending of Ocean's Eight, Claude Becker is arrested for the necklace theft while the crew keeps the royal jewels they secretly swapped, a haul worth more than the Toussaint.

Why Does the Second Theft Matter?

The second theft matters because it turns the necklace into a decoy. The audience spends the film watching the Toussaint, and while Daphne, Constance and Amita handle the obvious target, Lou and Yen swap the loaned royal jewels for Amita's fakes during the lockdown. That haul is worth more than the necklace, and because the museum never notices it, the job pays out above the plan.

Why Is Becker the Fall Guy?

Becker takes the blame because Debbie chose him in advance. She sets him up as her former partner and ex-lover, and he is arrested once the stolen stones have been sold. John Frazier suspects Debbie, but her alibi holds, so the investigation lands on the man she picked.

Where Does Everyone End Up?

Each member of the crew goes their own way. Amita moves to Paris, Rose opens a shop, Constance becomes a YouTuber, Tammy expands her fencing business, Nine Ball opens a pool hall, Daphne turns to directing and Lou takes a road trip. The film closes with Debbie at Danny's grave, toasting him.

How Does the Ending Work as Design?

It could be argued that the double theft is the cleverest piece of engineering in the film, because it hides the real score behind a job that already looks complete. Daphne joining as the eighth member is the warmer turn, since the mark becomes a partner, but the second theft is what makes the crew's math work. The quick epilogue moves fast, and each new venture gets only a line or two.

  • A partnership with Cartier gave the crew two days to film almost the whole Cartier Mansion on Fifth Avenue, shortly after its two year renovation.
