Sonic Box Office: Every Movie's Gross and Budget

The three Sonic films earned $1.22 billion worldwide, which is more than $1.2 billion, from a combined production budget of $297 million. Each film grew on the one before it, and the table sets the numbers side by side before the detail.

The grosses for each film come from Box Office Mojo, and the series totals are the sums of those three figures. The budget for the first film is also from Box Office Mojo, and the budgets for the second and third films are from The Numbers.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), directed by Jeff Fowler, grossed about $320 million worldwide on an $85 million budget, with $149 million of that in North America. It opened on February 14, 2020, after a delay that came with a redesign of the title character, according to CNBC. The film still returned roughly 3.8 times its budget. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned $405 million worldwide on a $90 million budget, about 4.5 times its cost and the best budget multiple of the three. Its $191 million domestic total and $215 million international total both beat the first film by a wide margin. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 grossed $492 million worldwide, the highest figure in the series, against a $122 million budget. It opened in the US on December 20, 2024, with Keanu Reeves voicing Shadow, and it was the film that took the series past $1 billion in combined worldwide grosses. Its domestic total of $236 million and international total of $256 million are both series highs too.

On the numbers, none of the three films is a flop, and in my opinion the series has a steady growth curve. Each film earned at least about 3.8 times its production budget worldwide, and each one outgrossed its predecessor.

The growth is the part I find most telling. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned roughly 27 percent more worldwide than the first film, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 added roughly another 21 percent on top of that. A series that gains audience with each installment, instead of shedding it, is a good sign. It could be argued that the redesign of Sonic, which came with the delay to February 14, 2020, paid for itself in goodwill that carried the later films.

Is Sonic 2 a hit? Yes, and by budget multiple it is the strongest of the three, at about 4.5 times its $90 million cost. Is Sonic 3 a hit? I would say so too, though the picture is slightly more modest in ratio terms. Its budget rose to $122 million, so its multiple of about 4 times is lower than the second film's even though it earned the most money. That being said, a bigger gross on a bigger budget is still a clear win, and it passed $1 billion for the franchise as a whole.

One caution: these multiples compare gross receipts with production budgets only, and the budgets listed by Box Office Mojo and The Numbers are production costs, so they say nothing about marketing spend. The ratios are a fair way to compare the three films with one another, but they are not a profit statement.

The domestic split is steady as well. North America supplied just under half of each film's worldwide total, so the series does not lean on one market. If you are weighing where Sonic 4 might land, the safest reading is that it is entering from a position of strength, with a March 19, 2027 US date. Predicting its gross would be guesswork, and I would rather wait for the opening weekend than guess.
