How Many Sonic Movies Are There?

There are three released Sonic movies, and Paramount Pictures has scheduled a fourth, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, for March 19, 2027, which makes four once the newest film opens. All of them follow the blue hedgehog who reached the big screen in 2020. If you arrived after seeing a number like 10, the answer is no: the film series is nowhere near that. For the full series overview, start at sonic movies.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), directed by Jeff Fowler, is the first film. It introduces Sonic as a young hedgehog hiding in a cave near Green Hills, Montana, where he spies on sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter). Ben Schwartz voices Sonic and Jim Carrey plays Dr. Robotnik. The release was pushed to February 14, 2020 and Sonic was redesigned before it opened. The film went on to earn $319.7 million worldwide on an $85 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.

Sonic 2 movie is formally Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), also directed by Fowler, and it opened on April 8, 2022. Eight months after Sonic sent Dr. Robotnik away to the Mushroom Planet, Robotnik escapes and teams up with Knuckles the Echidna (voiced by Idris Elba), who is hunting the Master Emerald. Tails, voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey, arrives to help Sonic. The sequel grossed $405.4 million worldwide on a $90 million budget.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) reached US theaters on December 20, 2024 and brings in Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves. G.U.N. Director Rockwell (Krysten Ritter) recruits Sonic, Tails and Knuckles to catch him in Tokyo, and Carrey now plays both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik. It earned $492.2 million worldwide on a $122 million budget. It could be argued that the series has grown with every entry, since each film earned more than the one before it, though the budget also jumped from $90 million to $122 million for the third. Full figures are at sonic box office.

Knuckles is the live action TV series tied to the Sonic films, and it is not counted among the movies. It premiered on Paramount+ on April 26, 2024, with all six episodes available at once. Created by John Whittington and Toby Ascher, it stars Idris Elba as Knuckles and Adam Pally as the small-town deputy Wade Whipple, with Stockard Channing, Cary Elwes and Christopher Lloyd in the cast. Fowler, who directed the films, directed the pilot.

The series is set between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, so it fills a gap in the story rather than adding a film to the count. No renewal has been announced, although Ascher has said the team would explore more seasons if they had a strong idea and story. Where it fits in a marathon is laid out in the sonic timeline and the sonic movies in order guide.

Yes, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is real and in post production, with a US theatrical date of March 19, 2027. Paramount revealed the title and cast on March 19, 2026, and released a 30 second teaser showing Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Confirmed cast includes Schwartz as Sonic, Carrey, Elba as Knuckles, Reeves, O'Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, Marsden, Sumpter, Ben Kingsley, Matt Berry, Nick Offerman and Richard Ayoade. Kristen Bell is reported to voice Amy Rose, and Fowler is reported as director with Pat Casey and Josh Miller reported as writers. Filming ran from March 2 to May 15, 2026 in Berkshire, UK, according to reports. No UK or Australian date has been reported yet.

One item is a rumor: Carrey is reportedly also playing Robotnik's grandfather Gerald again, per Digital Spy on March 22, 2026. The reports on the film do not mention a fifth film or call it the final chapter, so four is the count for now. Full status is on sonic 4, and the teaser is collected at sonic 4 trailer.
