Michelle Jones in Spider Man: Who MJ Is and Who Plays Her

Michelle Jones, called MJ, is Peter Parker's classmate and later partner in the Tom Holland Spider-Man films, played by Zendaya. She is credited as Michelle in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), directed by Jon Watts, and as MJ in every film after it. She belongs to the school circle around Peter, which also includes Ned Leeds, played by Jacob Batalon, and she is the person Peter hopes to confess his feelings to on the class trip in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).

Zendaya appears in four films, and her billing climbs as the character matters more to the story. She is seventh in Homecoming, sixth in Far From Home, second in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and fourth in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), which was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Second billing in No Way Home, behind only Holland, is the clearest sign of how far the role has grown since her first appearance.

The four films credit her only as Michelle (Homecoming) and MJ (the three later films), and none of them credits her as Mary Jane Watson. The initials fit Michelle Jones, though the credits give no further reason for the change. Mary Jane Watson is a different screen character, played by Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi trilogy and voiced by Zoë Kravitz in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). You can read about her on the Mary Jane Watson page.

Michelle Jones's story runs through four Spider-Man films, from background classmate in Spider-Man: Homecoming to the person whose safety drives Peter's choices in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Her first appearance puts her inside the school world that Peter is trying to hold together while he patrols as Spider-Man, and the film ends with Peter turning down Tony Stark's offer to join the Avengers full time.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) gives her the first real plot. Peter is still grieving Tony Stark and wants a normal school trip to Europe, with a plan to confess his feelings to MJ. Nick Fury drags him into the fight against the Elementals instead, and Quentin Beck, who calls himself Mysterio, turns out to be a fraud using holographic projections and drones. MJ works out that something is wrong while Beck tricks Peter with illusions. Peter recovers, builds a new suit and returns to London, and by the end he and MJ begin a relationship. The mid credits scene then has J. Jonah Jameson broadcast Beck's edited video, which accuses Spider-Man of murder and names him as Peter Parker.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) puts that exposure on her doorstep. Peter, MJ, Ned and May are arrested, lawyer Matt Murdock gets the charges dropped, and their college applications are rejected because of the notoriety. Peter asks Doctor Strange for a spell that makes the world forget him, the spell breaks, and villains from other universes arrive. It ends with Peter casting a new spell, after which everyone forgets him, MJ and Ned included. Weeks later he watches them from a distance and decides not to approach.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) picks up four years after that spell. Peter keeps away from MJ and Ned to protect them, and works alone on street level crime. MJ and Ned return to the city just as his powers start changing. The telepath later identified as Jean Grey targets MJ, and Peter rescues her and hides her on Frank Castle's houseboat, where the group works on a universal inhibitor. Peter then reintroduces himself to Ned, and the two share their old handshake.

Michelle Jones's closest relationships are with Peter Parker, her partner from the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Ned Leeds, her friend, with May Parker and Jean Grey also shaping her story. The films treat the Peter pairing as a romance only from the end of Far From Home. Before that, Peter's wish to confess his feelings sets the emotional frame for the European trip, and MJ's suspicion that something is off keeps her close to the main plot. You can follow Peter's side of the story on the Peter Parker page.

Her tie to Ned matters almost as much, because the two are caught in the same fallout. In Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) they share Peter's arrest and the rejected college applications, and in the spell's aftermath both lose their memory of him. In Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) they return to the city together, and Peter reintroduces himself to Ned and shares their old handshake. The Ned Leeds page covers that friendship in more detail.

May Parker, played by Marisa Tomei, is arrested alongside MJ in No Way Home. In Brand New Day, Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink, becomes the dangerous link to MJ, since the telepath targets her. Frank Castle, played by Jon Bernthal, provides the houseboat where she is hidden. See May Parker for May's own arc.

Michelle Jones is alive in the most recent film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), and no film so far has killed her or written her out. Her last appearance has Peter rescue her from Jean Grey's pursuit and shelter her on Castle's houseboat while the group builds the inhibitor.

The unresolved question is where she and Peter stand. The ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) starts their relationship, and the spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) wipes her memory of him, along with Ned's. As the film ends, Peter reintroduces himself to Ned, and Brand New Day does not show the same for MJ. Her memory and the state of the relationship are therefore left open, and anyone asking whether Peter and MJ end up together has to treat it as undecided on screen.

Michelle Jones's best moments are the scenes where she is a step ahead of Peter, led by her realization in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) that something is wrong. While Beck's illusions leave Peter stranded and hurt, MJ is the one who works it out, and that gives her a real role in a plot that could have kept her on the sidelines.

The most affecting stretch is the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), when Peter looks in on MJ and Ned after the spell and decides not to approach them. In my opinion this is the saga's quietest set piece, because it works with no fight at all, only a decision about whom to protect. Zendaya's second billing in that film fits the weight the story gives her.

My third pick is the Far From Home ending, where the relationship begins just before the mid credits scene detonates it. The pairing is short lived on screen, which is exactly why it lands. Last, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) moves her into the thick of the action, since Peter rescuing her from Jean Grey and hiding her on Castle's houseboat is the first time the franchise treats her as the person the villains come for.

If you are new to her story, start with Far From Home, then watch No Way Home, and finish with Brand New Day. Our Spider-Man movies in order page shows where each of those sits in release and chronological order.
