To watch the Spider-Man movies by universe, go in this order: the Sam Raimi Trilogy, The Amazing Spider-Man Films, the MCU Spider-Man Films, then the Spider-Verse Films.

Sam Raimi Trilogy (3 films, 6 hours 27 minutes). Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007), all directed by Sam Raimi with Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson. Villains: Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn / Green Goblin, Alfred Molina as Dr. Otto Octavius / Doc Ock, then Sandman and Venom.

The Amazing Spider-Man Films (2 films, 4 hours 37 minutes). The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), both directed by Marc Webb, with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. Villains: Rhys Ifans as the Lizard, then Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon / Electro and Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn.

MCU Spider-Man Films (4 films, 9 hours 15 minutes). Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with Tom Holland as Peter Parker, Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home set up Tom Holland's Peter Parker, Spider-Man: No Way Home opens his world to the Raimi and Webb characters, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set four years after Doctor Strange's spell.

Spider-Verse Films (2 films, 4 hours 17 minutes). Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, animated, centered on Shameik Moore voicing Miles Morales and Hailee Steinfeld voicing Gwen Stacy.

How does No Way Home tie the Raimi and Webb films together? Spider-Man: No Way Home ties the Raimi and Webb films together when Doctor Strange's spell goes wrong and pulls people from other universes into Tom Holland's, including Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborn / Green Goblin and Alfred Molina's Dr. Otto Octavius / Doc Ock from Raimi's films, and Jamie Foxx's Max Dillon / Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Peter keeps asking for changes while the spell is being cast, which destabilizes it, and that is why it fails. Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire are both credited as Peter Parker / Spider-Man alongside Holland. Their appearances make Spider-Man: No Way Home the one film that joins the live action three.

Characters repeat across the universes with different faces. Gwen Stacy is Bryce Dallas Howard in Spider-Man 3, Emma Stone in the Webb films and Hailee Steinfeld in the Spider-Verse films, and Aunt May is Rosemary Harris, Sally Field, Marisa Tomei and, in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Lily Tomlin.

The Spider-Verse films connect to the live action films only by theme and character names, not by story. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse follows Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In the first film, Kingpin's collider tears open the walls between universes, and in the second, Gwen lives on Earth-65 and Miles on Earth-1610, with the Spot able to move between universes. Nothing in those plots depends on a live action film, and no live action film depends on them.

Which universe should you start with? Start with the Sam Raimi Trilogy if you want Spider-Man: No Way Home to land fully, because it introduces the Green Goblin and Doc Ock, who both return. Start with Spider-Man: Homecoming for the Tom Holland run only, or Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for the animated story, which needs no earlier film.

About the Release Order

The Spider-Man movies in order of release run from Spider-Man (2002) to Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), eleven theatrical films across four groups of stories. Here is the full list, with the director and the lead for each.

  1. Spider-Man (2002), directed by Sam Raimi, with Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker.
  2. Spider-Man 2 (2004), directed by Sam Raimi, with Alfred Molina as Dr. Otto Octavius / Doc Ock.
  3. Spider-Man 3 (2007), directed by Sam Raimi, with Thomas Haden Church as Sandman and Topher Grace as Venom.
  4. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), directed by Marc Webb, with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.
  5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), directed by Marc Webb, with Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon / Electro.
  6. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), directed by Jon Watts, with Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Michael Keaton as the Vulture.
  7. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, with Shameik Moore voicing Miles Morales.
  8. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), directed by Jon Watts, with Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio.
  9. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), directed by Jon Watts, with Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.
  10. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), directed by Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson and Joaquim Dos Santos, with Oscar Isaac voicing Miguel O'Hara.
  11. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, with Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Sadie Sink as Jean Grey.

Why does release order work as the default? Release order works as the default because it is the sequence in which audiences met each version of Peter Parker, and later films refer back to earlier ones. Raimi's trilogy ran from 2002 to 2007, Marc Webb's two films followed in 2012 and 2014, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe version began with Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) lands between Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) falls between Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

What order do the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies come in? The Tom Holland Spider-Man movies come in this order: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). Captain America: Civil War is not a Spider-Man film, but Spider-Man: Homecoming refers back to Peter Parker's part in a dispute in Germany, the events of that film, so it sits just before for anyone following Holland's version from the start. Spider-Man: Far From Home opens with Peter still grieving Tony Stark, and Spider-Man: No Way Home begins with his identity exposed to the whole world.

Another animated film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is in production and set for a US release on June 18, 2027, and it will join the end of both lists on release. Its status and cast are on the Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse page.

About the Chronological Order

The Spider-Man chronological order follows each series through its own story and puts the two animated Spider-Verse films last, so the live action sequence matches release order exactly. The three live action universes are separate stories, so chronological order means the order of events inside each one.

  1. Spider-Man (2002), Peter Parker gets his powers and loses Uncle Ben.
  2. Spider-Man 2 (2004), set two years after the first film, with Alfred Molina as Dr. Otto Octavius / Doc Ock.
  3. Spider-Man 3 (2007), the end of the Raimi trilogy, with Sandman and Venom.
  4. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), a fresh start with Andrew Garfield, the Lizard and Gwen Stacy.
  5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Electro, Harry Osborn and the Oscorp storyline.
  6. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Peter returns to school after the dispute in Germany and takes on the Vulture.
  7. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), a school trip to Europe, with Nick Fury and Mysterio.
  8. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Peter's identity is public and he turns to Doctor Strange.
  9. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), set four years after Doctor Strange's spell, with Frank Castle and Mac Gargan.
  10. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), the animated story of Miles Morales.
  11. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), Miles and Gwen Stacy across the multiverse.

Where do the Spider-Verse films fit? The Spider-Verse films fit last because they run on their own animated track with Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy and Peter B. Parker as leads. Cinvibe lists them last so that the live action stories stay together. Watch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse before Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, but neither animated film depends on a live action film.

Captain America: Civil War is not a Spider-Man film and has no page in these lists. It is the story Spider-Man: Homecoming refers to, so a Holland marathon can open with it. For the full event by event sequence, see the Spider-Man timeline.

Where Should You Start With the Spider-Man Movies?

Start with Spider-Man (2002) if you want every connection in Spider-Man: No Way Home to land, or with Spider-Man: Homecoming if you only want the Tom Holland films. That is my opinion rather than a rule, because the films do not require each other apart from within a single series.

How long is a full marathon? The eleven films run 1,476 minutes in total, which is 24 hours 36 minutes. The four Tom Holland films alone take 555 minutes, or 9 hours 15 minutes, which makes a long weekend of it.

The shortest path that still sets up Spider-Man: No Way Home is Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), 389 minutes together, followed by the four Tom Holland films. Those three earlier films feature the villains Spider-Man: No Way Home leans on most. If you are new to the character, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a clean first film, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (117 minutes) is the lightest way into Miles Morales before Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Where can you watch them? In the US, most Spider-Man movies stream on Disney Plus, with exceptions for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Netflix) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (rent or buy only), as of 2 November 2026 according to JustWatch via TMDB. Streaming changes often, so check where to watch Spider-Man for the US, UK and Australia before you queue anything up.

Facts

FAQs

In what order should I watch the Spider-Man movies?

There are eleven Spider-Man movies in release order: Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man 3 (2007), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). If you prefer to keep the live action stories together, watch those nine first and then the two Spider-Verse films.

What order do the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies come in?

The Tom Holland Spider-Man movies come in the same order for release and story: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins four years after Doctor Strange's spell, while Spider-Man: No Way Home is the film that also features Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

What is the chronological order of the Spider-Man movies?

The chronological order is Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man 3 (2007), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). The animated films are placed last because they follow their own continuity.

Do I need to watch the other Spider-Man movies before Spider-Man: No Way Home?

No, but the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb films make its returns land harder, since Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx reprise their villains and Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appear as Peter Parker.

Do I need to watch Captain America: Civil War before Spider-Man: Homecoming?

No, it is not required, because Captain America: Civil War is not a Spider-Man film. Spider-Man: Homecoming refers back to Peter Parker's part in a dispute in Germany, the events of that film, so watch it first only if you want the full Tom Holland run from the start.

Is there a Spider-Man movie after Brand New Day?

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is the next announced film. It is animated, in production and set for a US release on June 18, 2027, according to TheWrap, and it follows Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
