Spiderman Far From Home Plot: What Is the Movie About?

Spider-Man: Far From Home follows Peter Parker on a school trip across Europe that turns into a secret mission for Nick Fury. Peter is still grieving Tony Stark after Avengers: Endgame, and all he wants is a normal vacation with his classmates, including a plan to confess his feelings to MJ.

Fury tracks him down anyway. He explains that giant monsters called Elementals are attacking the world, and he introduces Quentin Beck / Mysterio, who says he comes from another version of Earth and has already watched these creatures destroy his home. Peter reluctantly agrees to help, and he tries to keep the whole thing hidden from his friends while the class tour keeps moving from city to city.

The film is the second MCU Spider-Man film, following Spider-Man: Homecoming, and it runs 129 minutes. If you want the full run of the saga before you start, the Spider-Man movies in order guide shows where this one sits.

Spider-Man: Far From Home Recap: Full Plot SummarySpoilers

In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker is recruited by Nick Fury to help stop the Elementals, only to discover that Quentin Beck is a fraud who faked them with holographic projections and drones. The recap below reveals the whole story, including the ending.

Peter's class tour of Europe is interrupted when Fury pulls him into the fight. Beck, nicknamed Mysterio, says he is from another dimension and has fought the monsters before. Peter bonds with him, and, feeling unready to be the next Tony Stark, he hands over a pair of glasses Stark left him that control a powerful defense AI.

That decision is the mistake the rest of the film pays for. Beck turns out to be a former Stark employee, and with the glasses in his hands he plans a bigger staged attack in London.

MJ works out that something is wrong, and Beck tricks Peter with illusions that leave him stranded and hurt. Peter recovers, builds a new suit and returns to London to fight the drones. He learns to rely on his spider-sense instead of his sight, and he wipes out the drones. Beck is killed when his own drones fire on him in the chaos.

Before he dies, Beck has recorded a video that edits the events to make Spider-Man look like the killer, and his team releases it after his death. Peter gets the glasses back, and he and MJ begin a relationship.

When and Where Was the Spider-Man: Far From Home Premiere?

The world premiere of Spider-Man: Far From Home took place on June 26, 2019, at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles (Hollywood). The cast walked the red carpet there six days before the film opened in US theaters on July 2, 2019, and ABC7 Los Angeles covered the red carpet.

The UK matched the US date of July 2, 2019. Australia is listed at June 28, 2019, a date that remains unconfirmed.

Spiderman Far From Home Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home exposes Peter Parker's identity to the world, because Beck's edited video blames Spider-Man for his death. Everything below covers the final act and both scenes after the credits.

Peter gets the glasses back and returns them to Happy, and he then begins a relationship with MJ. Beck's team releases the doctored video, and the mid credits scene is where the broadcast names Spider-Man as Peter Parker. The film ends on that cliffhanger.

The cause goes back to the middle of the film. Peter gives Stark's glasses to Beck because he feels unready to be the next Tony Stark, and that handover is what lets a former Stark employee stage the London attack. The ending is the price of that choice, not a twist from nowhere.

In my opinion, the film's best trick is how it lets the audience enjoy a victory before it takes the win away. Peter beats the drones by trusting his spider-sense over his eyes, a neat answer to a villain whose whole method is deceiving what people see. Yet the video turns that victory into the thing that ruins him, because Beck wins the argument after he is dead.

It could be argued that this is the boldest ending in the MCU run of Spider-Man films. Peter's story here starts in grief over Stark after Avengers: Endgame and ends with his name broadcast to everyone, a bigger swing than the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Compared with the earlier Spider-Man outings, where the mask always protected the person underneath, this one strips the protection away on screen. The next film in release order, Spider-Man: No Way Home, has to deal with that fallout directly.

Spider-Man: Far From Home Post Credit Scenes ExplainedSpoilers

Spider-Man: Far From Home has two scenes during and after the credits: a mid credits scene that exposes Peter Parker's identity and a post credits scene that reveals Nick Fury and Maria Hill are the Skrulls Talos and Soren. Both contain major spoilers.

In the mid credits scene, J. Jonah Jameson broadcasts Beck's edited video, accusing Spider-Man of murder and revealing that he is Peter Parker. This is the scene that carries the cliffhanger into the next film, and it pays off the video Beck recorded before his own drones killed him in London.

In the post credits scene, Nick Fury and Maria Hill turn out to be the Skrulls Talos and Soren in disguise, while the real Fury is aboard a spaceship elsewhere. That reveal recasts the Fury of the whole film: the man who pulled Peter off his school trip and handed him the Elementals mission was not the real Fury. It also fits a film built on deception, since Beck fakes monsters while the person recruiting Peter is himself a fake.

Where Was Spider-Man: Far From Home Filmed?

Spider-Man: Far From Home was filmed in England, the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain and the United States, with Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire as its base. The full list of locations covers Hertfordshire, London, Prague and Liberec, Venice, Belchite and New York City and Newark.

The Czech leg is the best documented. The production spent about two weeks shooting there in September 2018, and local spending was reported at around $11 million. The Czech Film Fund offered a 20% rebate, and the report noted that Czech cities can double for other European settings. The Czech Film Commission lists Prague and Liberec as the shooting locations, and Liberec stood in for Prague on screen.

Venice in Italy and London give the film its postcard European backdrop, while New York City and Newark cover the American scenes. Belchite in Spain is a further location, according to The Numbers.
