After Lex Luthor turns public opinion against Superman, Lois and Jimmy Olsen expose Luthor's scheme, which clears Superman's name and leads to Luthor's arrest. Jimmy Olsen is Clark Kent's colleague and ally at the Daily Planet, and no Superman film plot summary calls him Superman's best friend. In my view it is the one time the character feels necessary to the plot rather than decorative. Lois and Jimmy turn a tangle of lies about Boravia into a public record, and that is the job a Daily Planet reporter exists to do. Gisondo gets a script that trusts Jimmy with the story's resolution.

The second pick is the Daily Planet in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, where David Warfield takes over the paper and Perry White eventually wins it back. Jimmy is only sixth billed there, yet it is the film that lets McClure's newsroom feel under threat.
