Krypto Superman Dog: Who He Is and Which Films He Is In
Krypto, Superman's dog, appears in two films so far: Superman (2025), directed by James Gunn, and Supergirl (2026), directed by Craig Gillespie. Superman, played by David Corenswet, owns him in Superman (2025), and Kara Zor-El, played by Milly Alcock, owns him in Supergirl (2026).
Who Is Krypto, Superman's Dog?
Krypto is Superman's pet dog, and he appears in Superman (2025) and Supergirl (2026). In Superman (2025), directed by James Gunn, Superman is beaten for the first time by a powerful metahuman nicknamed the Hammer of Boravia, then retreats to the Fortress of Solitude with Krypto, where robots heal him with concentrated sunlight. The Superman character has the Kryptonian name Kal-El, and David Corenswet, who plays him, also appears in the second Krypto film.
What is Superman's name on Krypton? It is Kal-El. In Superman (1978), his father Jor-El and his mother Lara send their infant son Kal-El to Earth in a small ship, and the Kents of Smallville, Kansas raise him as Clark. The credits label the man and the hero together: Christopher Reeve is billed as Superman / Clark Kent in Superman (1978) and Superman II, while David Corenswet is billed simply as Superman in Superman (2025).
What kind of dog is Krypto? Neither film names a breed in its credits or published plot summaries, so the dependable description is simply Superman's pet dog. In Superman (2025), Inverse describes him as an unruly dog with one sticky-up ear who causes trouble while saving Kal's life a few times. How did Krypto meet Superman? Neither film shows it, so the origin of the friendship is unanswered on screen. No performer is credited for Krypto in the live-action films: the top-billed TMDB cast lists for both name nobody for the role, while the Superman (2025) cast runs from David Corenswet through Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
Krypto's second film makes him someone else's dog as well. In Supergirl (2026), directed by Craig Gillespie, Kara Zor-El (played by Milly Alcock) is 23 and partying her way across space when the outlaw Krem hijacks her ship and shoots her dog Krypto with a poisoned dart. The dart leaves him only a few days to live. So, if you are wondering whose dog he is, the honest answer is both: Superman's in the first film and Kara's in the second. Inverse names Kara as Krypto's true owner, which matches the comics, where Krypto is Supergirl's dog and Superman only looks after him in Superman (2025).
Where did the screen version come from? Gunn said Krypto was inspired by his rescue dog Ozu, whom he adopted shortly after he began writing Superman (2025), according to Malay Mail. Ozu came from a backyard hoarding situation. Gunn described him as problematic: he damaged the house, ate Gunn's laptop, and took a long time to let people touch him. Gunn said Krypto entered the script while Ozu was changing his life.
Krypto the Superdog is also the name of an earlier screen version. The animated series Krypto the Superdog premiered on Cartoon Network on March 25, 2005, exactly 50 years after the character's comic debut. Alan Burnett and Paul Dini developed it, Warner Bros. Animation produced it, and it ran for 2 seasons. In the animated film DC League of Super-Pets, released by Warner Bros. in the US on July 29, 2022, Dwayne Johnson voices Krypto. It had a production budget of $90 million and grossed about $207.6 million worldwide, according to The Numbers.

Krypto's Story Arc Across Both FilmsSpoilers
Krypto's arc runs from a captured pet in Superman (2025) to a poisoned one in Supergirl (2026), and in both he is the reason a hero has something to lose. The Engineer, an ally of Lex Luthor, follows Superman to the Fortress of Solitude. Later, while Luthor releases a giant creature on Metropolis as a distraction, Luthor, the Hammer and the Engineer break into the Fortress, capture Krypto and recover the full Kryptonian message from Jor-El and Lara. Once Luthor broadcasts it, public opinion turns against Superman, so Krypto's capture is a hinge of the plot.
Krypto then earns his place in the finale. When Luthor opens a rift that splits Metropolis, Superman defeats the Engineer and learns the Hammer is a clone of himself, and with Krypto's help he knocks the clone into a black hole beneath the rift. Luthor admits he staged the Boravia conflict out of envy and is subdued by Krypto. Back at the Fortress, Kara arrives drunk to collect Krypto. In the Superman (2025) mid credits scene, Superman and Krypto sit on the Moon looking at Earth.
The second film flips the stakes. Kara tracks Krem across the galaxy for the antidote, with the young Ruthye along for the chase. Once Supergirl kills Krem with his own sword, she takes the antidote and saves Krypto. She then returns to Earth with him and reunites with Superman at their Metropolis apartment.
Krypto's Relationships: Superman, Kara and Lex Luthor
Krypto's closest bonds are with Superman and with Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El (Supergirl), and his sharpest conflict is with Lex Luthor. With Superman, the link is companionship and rescue: Krypto goes with him to the Fortress of Solitude when he is hurt, and the two sit on the Moon together in the mid credits scene.
With Kara Zor-El, the link moves from a handover to a partnership. In Superman (2025) she arrives drunk at the Fortress to collect him. In Supergirl (2026) he is plainly hers, and her whole journey across Holzherr, Bilquis and Barenton is driven by the need to save him. Ruthye, the young woman Kara Zor-El meets on Holzherr, shares that chase. You can read more about Kara Zor-El (Supergirl).
With Lex Luthor, the relationship is hostile. Luthor's group captures Krypto to get at the Kryptonian message, and Krypto later helps subdue Luthor at the end. Krem, the villain of Supergirl (2026), is the other person who endangers him.
What Happens to Krypto? Fate and StatusSpoilers
Krypto survives both films, so his status is alive. In Superman (2025) he is captured by Luthor's group, helps Superman in the finale and subdues Luthor, and Kara then arrives at the Fortress to collect him. In Supergirl (2026) the poisoned dart puts his life on a clock of a few days, and Supergirl saves him with the antidote after killing Krem.
In Superman (2025) his last image is the mid credits scene with Superman on the Moon; in Supergirl (2026) Kara brings him back to Earth and reunites with Superman at their Metropolis apartment. Nothing in either story closes the door on a return, which matters if you are following the wider Superman movies in release order. The next film in the series, Man of Tomorrow, is due in US theaters on July 9, 2027.
Best Krypto Moments in the Films
The best Krypto moment is the mid credits scene of Superman (2025), where Superman and Krypto sit on the Moon looking at Earth. It is a small beat, but it says more about Superman as a person than a fight does. Compare it with the Fortress in Superman (1978), where Jor-El's hologram trains Clark for twelve years: here the Fortress is a place to recover, and the company is a dog.
The finale assist comes second for me. Krypto helping Superman knock his clone into the black hole is a proper set piece beat, and his subduing of Luthor right after gives the villain's confession a punchline.
Supergirl (2026) earns the third spot because the poisoned dart makes a funny, drifting road story suddenly urgent. Kara is not saving a planet, she is saving her dog, and that is easy to care about. And, as a bonus, Kara arriving drunk to collect Krypto in Superman (2025) is the comic cousin of that same bond.
