Annabelle Doll: The Haunted Doll of The Conjuring Universe

The Annabelle doll is the haunted porcelain doll at the center of the three Annabelle films and a fixture of the Warrens' artifact room, appearing from Annabelle (2014) to Annabelle Comes Home (2019). In Annabelle (2014), Father Perez describes her as the demon's link to the world, and the films are based on cases claimed by Ed and Lorraine Warren rather than on anything proven.

Who Is the Annabelle Doll in the Movies?

The Annabelle doll is a porcelain doll that a demon uses as a doorway into the human world, and she is the central cursed object of The Conjuring universe. Her story is told across three films: Annabelle (2014), directed by John R. Leonetti; Annabelle: Creation (2017), directed by David F. Sandberg; and Annabelle Comes Home (2019), directed by Gary Dauberman. She also ties to The Conjuring (2013), directed by James Wan, because Annabelle (2014) ends with her in the Warrens' collection.

The name causes some confusion, because it belongs to more than one thing. In Annabelle (2014) the doll is a gift from John Form to his pregnant wife Mia, and she is linked to Annabelle Higgins, the cult member who dies in the nursery holding her. In Annabelle: Creation the girl Janice is adopted and takes the name Annabelle, which feeds into the 2014 prologue. Tree O'Toole is credited in Annabelle (2014) in the role "Thin Woman; Annabelle", and Joseph Bishara is credited as the "Annabelle Demon" in Creation.

Father Perez confirms in Annabelle (2014) that she is the demon's link to the world, and in Annabelle Comes Home opening her case frees the doll's demon. The Annabelle Doll Movie Story: From Bee's Closet to the Glass CaseSpoilers

The Annabelle doll movie story runs from a dollmaker's grief in the 1950s to a locked glass case in the Warrens' home, and in chronological order it begins with Creation rather than with the film that carries her name. Samuel and Esther Mullins lose their daughter Bee when a car hits her. Years later they take in Sister Charlotte and six orphaned girls, and Janice, weakened by polio, enters Bee's locked room and opens a closet holding a porcelain doll. That releases a demon, which first appears to Janice in Bee's shape, then possesses her and kills Samuel. Linda throws the doll down a well, but the evil does not stop. Esther explains that she and Samuel unknowingly invited a demon in when they begged to see Bee again, and Sister Charlotte locks Janice and the doll inside the closet. Janice later escapes, is adopted, and returns as Annabelle to murder her adoptive parents.

That murder opens Annabelle (2014). In 1967 John Form gives Mia the rare doll, their neighbors are killed by two cult members, and the woman dies in the nursery clutching the doll. The Forms move to Pasadena, and the haunting starts again after Mia finds the doll John had thrown away. Father Perez confirms the doll is the demon's link to the world, and the demon takes her. Evelyn offers her own soul in Mia's place, the doll and demon vanish, and Leah is safe. Six months later the doll is bought by a mother for her daughter, Debbie, and she ends up in a glass case in the Warrens' collection.

The Conjuring (2013) opens in 1968 with the Warrens concluding that a haunted doll is only a tool for a demon. The Conjuring 2 later shows Ed adding a haunted Crooked Man toy to the collection, next to the Annabelle doll. The last chapter is Annabelle Comes Home, where the Warrens take the doll from two nurses and seal her in the case. On the drive home she stirs up spirits that attack Ed. A year later Daniela, the friend of babysitter Mary Ellen, opens the case, frees the doll's demon and wakes other cursed items, including the Ferryman, the Bride, a haunted board game and the Black Shuck. A phone call warns the girls that Annabelle needs a soul to be satisfied. Judy plays recorded footage of Ed exorcising the Bride, and the girls get the doll back into the case and lock it.

Who Is Connected to the Annabelle Doll?

The Annabelle doll is connected first to the Warrens, who keep her, and then to a string of families and caretakers who each pay a price for handling her. Ed Warren and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, are the ones who lock her away, and their daughter Judy, played by Mckenna Grace in Annabelle Comes Home, is the one who helps put her back in the case. For the full profiles, see Ed Warren, Lorraine Warren and Judy Warren.

In Annabelle (2014) the doll belongs to Mia and John Form, and Evelyn, who runs a bookshop, gives up her own soul to save Mia's daughter Leah. Father Perez, played by Tony Amendola, is the priest who identifies the doll as the demon's link to the world and is attacked while trying to bring her to the Warrens. He returns in The Curse of La Llorona, where he has dealt with an earlier haunted doll case, which is that film's tie back to her story.

In Creation the doll is tied to the Mullins household. Samuel and Esther, played by Anthony LaPaglia and Miranda Otto, bring the evil in through grief, and Janice, played by Talitha Eliana Bateman, becomes the human host. Sister Charlotte, played by Stephanie Sigman, is the one who locks the closet. The Creation tag scene shows Valak at the Abbey of St. Carta in 1952, which points toward Valak the Nun in The Nun (2018). The films treat that as a teaser, and they do not state that the doll's demon and Valak are the same entity.

What Happens to the Annabelle Doll? Where Is She Kept?Spoilers

In the films the Annabelle doll ends up locked in a blessed glass case inside the Warrens' artifact room, and that is where Annabelle Comes Home leaves her. Annabelle (2014) has her vanish with the demon once Evelyn gives herself up, then reappear in a shop and pass to a mother and her daughter Debbie, before she reaches the Warrens' collection, which links that film to The Conjuring (2013). So, was the doll ever missing? Only briefly, inside the story, and the films always bring her back to the case.

Annabelle Comes Home is the closest the saga comes to a last word on her. Judy and Mary Ellen rescue Daniela, the girls get the doll back into the case and lock it, and the Warrens return the next morning to find the disturbances over. The artifact room stays locked as the Warrens' collection. Later main films keep that room in view: in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It Ed places a cup from the occultist's altar among items tied to the earlier films, such as the Annabelle doll, and in The Conjuring: Last Rites a cursed mirror returns to the Warrens' museum.

The real-world version is a separate matter. The films are based on cases claimed by Ed and Lorraine Warren, and anything said about a real doll, its history or its current whereabouts is the Warrens' account as relayed by others, not something the movies establish as proven. The doll on screen is a dramatization built for horror, and her fate is the one the screenwriters set.

Best Annabelle Doll Moments, Ranked by Fear

The best Annabelle doll moments are the ones where the film lets the doll do nothing at all, and in my opinion that restraint is why she works better as an object than most movie monsters do. I will pick three.

First, the closet in Annabelle: Creation. Janice, who has been told to stay out of Bee's locked room, goes in and opens a closet holding a porcelain doll, and the dread comes from what the audience already knows about the house. In my opinion it is the cleanest example of a rule the saga keeps: the doll is the doorway, and the demon behind it is the threat.

Second, Evelyn's sacrifice in Annabelle (2014). It could be argued that this is the emotional high point of the whole doll story, because it gives the curse a cost that lands on a person with a history, her own daughter's death in a car accident. The scare scenes around it are competent, and the film is at its best when the demon's price becomes personal.

Third, the artifacts room in Annabelle Comes Home. The doll is again barely used, and the film instead lets Daniela open the case and then spends its running time on the consequences, with the Ferryman, the Bride and the Black Shuck doing the heavy lifting. Judy playing recorded footage of Ed exorcising the Bride is a smart use of the franchise's own history. That being said, the doll is the least active presence in her own film, which some fans will count against it and I count as a deliberate choice.

If you want the doll at her most frightening, start with Creation. If you want her in context, the rest of the cursed collection is covered in the Conjuring timeline, and Conjuring movies ranked places each film in the series.
