Who Is Albus Dumbledore?
Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the senior adult in Harry Potter's story. He first appears in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001), directed by Chris Columbus, where Richard Harris plays him. He is called away from the school when Harry, Ron and Hermione decide to reach the Stone first, and afterward he is the one who explains to Harry why his mother's love protected him. The credits also list a Young Albus Dumbledore (uncredited) and a Young Dumbledore, so the younger version of the character is billed separately from the adult.
How many actors played the headmaster? Three actors play the adult character in the credited cast. Harris plays him in the Sorcerer's Stone and in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). Harris died on 25 October 2002, shortly after he finished the second film, according to UPI. Michael Gambon's casting as his replacement was announced in February 2003, and he plays the role from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), directed by Alfonso Cuarón, through Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Jude Law then takes the part in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022), both directed by David Yates.
The HBO series is covered on the harry potter tv series page, where TODAY reports a premiere date of 25 December 2026. For what comes next, see the new harry potter movie page.

Dumbledore's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers
The headmaster moves from protective mentor to the strategist of the war against Voldemort, and his influence outlasts him. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone he talks to Harry in the hospital wing and tells him the Stone has been destroyed. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets he is forced out as headmaster while students are being petrified, and he returns once Ginny is rescued and the Chamber's threat is over.
In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban he hints that Harry and Hermione can use her Time-Turner to change the night, which lets them free Buckbeak and help Sirius Black escape. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire he tells the school that Voldemort has returned, even though the Ministry of Magic refuses to accept it, and he honors Cedric Diggory at the memorial.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix tests his authority most. Dolores Umbridge gains power until she becomes Headmistress, the students form Dumbledore's Army, and the headmaster arranges for Snape to teach Harry Occlumency. He fights Voldemort at the Ministry, then returns to his post and explains the prophecy to Harry. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince he asks Harry to coax a hidden memory out of Horace Slughorn, and that memory shows how Voldemort split his soul into Horcruxes.
His presence continues after that. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Rufus Scrimgeour delivers his bequests to Harry, Ron and Hermione: a Deluminator, a book of fairy tales and a Golden Snitch, while the Sword of Gryffindor is missing. In Part 2, his brother Aberforth's secret passage gets the trio into Hogwarts.
In story order, the Fantastic Beasts films come first. In The Crimes of Grindelwald he asks Newt Scamander to find Credence Barebone, and in the following film he quietly assembles a team led by Newt. The harry potter timeline places both before the Sorcerer's Stone.
Key Relationships: Harry, Grindelwald and Aberforth
The headmaster's most important relationships are with Harry, with Voldemort as his opponent, and with Gellert Grindelwald, the man he once loved. With Harry Potter the bond is that of a mentor who explains things late and carefully: he tells Harry the prophecy's meaning in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and in the limbo like place in Part 2 he tells Harry that he may go back. With Lord Voldemort the rivalry turns physical in the Ministry fight of the Order of the Phoenix.
What is the link between him and Grindelwald? In Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, he tells Grindelwald that he once loved him and backed his vision. A magical blood pact stops the two from fighting each other, and it breaks only when Grindelwald tries to strike Credence and the headmaster and Aberforth shield him. See Grindelwald for his own profile.
Who is his brother? Aberforth Dumbledore, played by Ciarán Hinds in Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and by Richard Coyle in the 2022 spin-off. In that later film he also tells Credence that he is a Dumbledore by blood, and Credence is credited as "Credence Barebone / Aurelius Dumbledore".
The rest of his circle matters too. Newt Scamander is his former student and the leader of his team. Snape is the man who kills him, and Snape's memories in Part 2 show that he secretly served the headmaster.
How Does Dumbledore Die in the Films?Spoilers
Albus is killed by Severus Snape in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), directed by David Yates. He takes Harry to a sea cave to retrieve a Horcrux and weakens himself by drinking the painful potion that guards it, and the locket they bring back turns out to be a fake. Back at Hogwarts, Death Eaters have entered through a magical cabinet that Draco Malfoy repaired. Draco corners the weakened headmaster but cannot bring himself to kill him, and Snape arrives and does it. The school mourns, and Harry decides not to return to school and to hunt the remaining Horcruxes instead.
Why was he killed off? Within the story, his death removes the protector Harry has relied on since the first film and sends the three friends out on their own for the last two. At the end of Part 1, Voldemort takes the Elder Wand from his tomb. In Part 2, Snape's memories show that he loved Lily Potter and secretly served the headmaster, who appears one last time in the limbo scene. Harry ends the series by destroying the Elder Wand. The character's status is dead, and the limbo scene is his only return in the films.
Best Dumbledore Moments in the Films
In my opinion, the strongest scenes for this character are the quiet ones, in which he gives Harry just enough to act on. The hospital wing in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is the clearest case, because he does not lecture. He tells Harry that the Stone is gone and that his mother's love protected him, and the series' central idea is laid down in a few lines.
It could be argued that the Time-Turner hint in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is his most economical piece of guidance. He never says what to do. He suggests that the night can be changed, and Harry and Hermione work out the rest. Set beside the Order of the Phoenix, where he fights Voldemort at the Ministry, the Azkaban scene shows his preferred method: a nudge, not an order.
The Goblet of Fire memorial matters for a different reason. He is the adult who says Voldemort killed Cedric while the Ministry denies it, and that is the point where the saga turns from school story into war. The sea cave in the Half-Blood Prince is the hardest to watch, because he weakens himself by drinking the potion that guards the locket.
Among the spin-offs, perhaps the best scene is the one where he admits to Grindelwald that he loved him, since it recasts every later scene between them. If you are new to the saga, start with the Sorcerer's Stone hospital wing and then follow the harry potter movies in order.
