New Harry Potter Movie: What Is Coming Next
There is no new Harry Potter movie announced, and the next screen project is HBO's Harry Potter television series, reported to premiere in the US on December 25, 2026. It is a TV series, not a film, and its first season runs to eight episodes.
Is There a New Harry Potter Movie Coming Out?
No new Harry Potter movie has been announced. The saga's eight main films ended with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in July 2011, and the three Fantastic Beasts spin-offs ended with Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, which reached theaters in April 2022. You can see every one of them on the Harry Potter movies hub, or in sequence in Harry Potter movies in order. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a stage play, so it is a mention here and not a screen project.
So, what are people actually searching for? In most cases it is the HBO series, which is the next screen project in the franchise. It is a television production with a planned run of one season per book, and filming began at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK on July 14, 2025, with Variety reporting that the season one shoot was expected to run until spring 2026. Season one has eight episodes and a reported December premiere. The series is covered in full on the Harry Potter TV series page, and the trailers are collected under new Harry Potter movie trailer.

Hans Zimmer and Bleeding Fingers compose the score, announced on January 14, 2026. For the film casts, see Harry Potter cast.

Is the Cillian Murphy Voldemort Rumor True?
No, the Cillian Murphy rumor is denied. A report in March 2026 claimed Murphy had been cast as Voldemort in the series, and Deadline carried his response that he is categorically not in it. The claim is listed with the status denied and should not be treated as casting news.
For context, Ralph Fiennes played Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The confirmed series cast lists no one for the role. Anything else you read about future casting stays a rumor until HBO or a trade paper such as Variety, Deadline or The Hollywood Reporter states it.

What We Know About the Next Harry Potter Project
The short version is that a new Harry Potter movie is not on the schedule, but a new Harry Potter story on screen is. The series has a start of filming (July 14, 2025), a score (Zimmer and Bleeding Fingers), an eight episode first season and a reported premiere of December 25, 2026. It also has a second season in view, since the cast list already names roles specific to season two.
That structure explains why there is no film. Where the eight films compressed each book into one feature, with the last book split into Part 1 and Part 2, the series gives each book a season. In my opinion, that is the real reason the franchise is returning as television: it allows chapters the films trimmed, such as more of the Dursley household and the school year, to be shown at length.
It could be argued that a film might still follow one day, perhaps from the Fantastic Beasts side of the saga, whose box office fell from $816 million worldwide for the first film to $407 million for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. But nothing in the reporting says so, and I will not guess. If you want something to watch in the meantime, start with Harry Potter movies in order, then check where to watch Harry Potter.
