Snotlout: How to Train Your Dragon Character Guide

Snotlout is one of the teenage Vikings who train alongside Hiccup and Astrid on the island of Berk, and he is credited in all four theatrical films of the series. He first appears in How to Train Your Dragon (2010), directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, where Jonah Hill is billed fifth as Snotlout (voice).

Snotlout is credited as "Snotlout" and "Snotlout (voice)" in the feature films, and as "Snotlout Jorgenson (voice)" for Jonah Hill in the short Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury. All three names refer to the same character.

Snotlout goes from a trainee in Berk's dragon fighting class in How to Train Your Dragon (2010) to one of the dragon riders who stay with Hiccup through How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). His arc is told mostly through the group of young riders rather than through scenes built around him alone.

In How to Train Your Dragon (2010), Hiccup joins the village dragon fighting class with Astrid and the other teens. Near the end, Hiccup rallies his friends to ride the training dragons into the battle against the Red Death.

In How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), directed by Dean DeBlois, Snotlout is billed sixth. Five years after the peace with dragons, Hiccup and Astrid are captured by trappers who work for the warlord Drago, who later captures the other riders and takes control of every dragon in sight. After Stoick is killed, Hiccup returns to Berk and frees Toothless, and the freed dragons help drive Drago's Bewilderbeast back into the sea.

In How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), Snotlout is billed seventh. Berk is crowded with rescued dragons, and the riders use wingsuits to strike back at Grimmel and free Toothless.

How to Train Your Dragon (2025) retells the first story with Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, again billed fifth. Hiccup and his friends ride the training dragons to join the fight against the giant dragon.

Snotlout is a peer and classmate of Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs, Ruffnut and Tuffnut, and the films place him among them from the first dragon training scenes. Hiccup is the chief's son and the group's eventual leader, while Astrid is the rider who first becomes suspicious of Hiccup's secret.

Fishlegs and the twins in Ruffnut and Tuffnut complete the class. In How to Train Your Dragon (2010) they are voiced by Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kristen Wiig and T.J. Miller, and in How to Train Your Dragon (2025) they are played by Julian Dennison, Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn.

The adults around them include Stoick, chief of Berk, and Gobber, the blacksmith Hiccup works for. The credits for both of those films also list a character named Spitelout, voiced by David Tennant and played by Peter Serafinowicz.

The films do not state Snotlout's family ties to Hiccup.

Snotlout survives the series: none of the four films shows him dying or leaving Berk. In How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), the Berkians release their dragons so the creatures can go to the Hidden World, and the film ends with a time jump of ten years.

The short How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (2019), a half hour NBC special that aired on December 3, 2019, is set ten years after How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) and just before the film's epilogue. It credits Zack Pearlman as Snotlout (voice), the only time the role is voiced by someone other than Jonah Hill in the animated stories.

The live action How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2027) is dated for June 11, 2027 in the US. Snotlout's casting for it has not been confirmed.

Snotlout's best moments are the group battles: the Red Death finale in How to Train Your Dragon (2010) and the wingsuit strike on Grimmel in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). He shares the screen with the other riders in the series' biggest set pieces, and that is where he works best.

The first is the finale of How to Train Your Dragon (2010), where Hiccup's classmates climb onto the training dragons and join the fight against the Red Death. That is the moment the class stops being a joke and becomes a team.

The second is the wingsuit strike in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), when the riders go after Grimmel to free Toothless. It is the most inventive group action in the series.

The third is the final battle of How to Train Your Dragon (2025), which gives Gabriel Howell's Snotlout the same stage as Jonah Hill's. Watch both finales back to back, then read our live action versus animated comparison.
