Who Is Miguel O'Hara Spider-Man?

Miguel O'Hara is the Spider-Man from a 2099 future in the animated Spider-Verse films, and he is also known as Spider-Man 2099. He is voiced by Oscar Isaac, who is billed third in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), directed by Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson and Joaquim Dos Santos.

So, is Miguel O'Hara supposed to be Spider-Man? Yes, he is a Spider-Man from a 2099 future, and the films place him among the Spider-people as a leader. What sets him apart is his role: in the sequel he is the leader of the Spider-Society, a multiversal group of Spider-people, and he enforces its rules with a hard edge.

His home is Earth-928, the 2099 future he comes from, and he lives in Nueva York, the city on that world where the Spider-Society is based. The filmmakers designed Nueva York as an authoritarian, brutalist, minimalist city that reflects Miguel's personality, drawing on Syd Mead's illustrations and Oscar Niemeyer's architecture. Oscar Isaac has described Miguel as the one Spider-Man without a sense of humor.

If you are new to the series, start with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, then move on to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where Miguel becomes a main character. The other animated heroes are listed in our Spider-Verse characters guide.

What Is Miguel O'Hara's Story Arc?Spoilers

Miguel O'Hara goes from a post credit cameo in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) to the leader of the Spider-Society and Miles Morales's main opponent in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). Spoilers follow.

He debuts after the end credits of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman. He drops in on Earth-67 as a Spider-Man from a 2099 future and quarrels with that world's animated Spider-Man. The scene plays as a joke, yet it hints that more Spider-people are out there.

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales pursue the Spot, a scientist turned villain who can move between universes. The Spot is Dr. Jonathan Ohnn, who worked at Alchemax before a collider explosion disfigured and empowered him. Alchemax is the company tied to the Spot's origin, and the chase leads the two heroes to Miguel's home city, Nueva York on Earth-928, and to the Spider-Society, which he runs. The group's mission is to repair the damage caused by dimensional anomalies, and its estimated membership grew from about 280 variations to about 630. Miguel's rule is that certain canon events must happen to keep realities stable, and he reads Miles's refusal to let his father die as a danger to the whole multiverse.

The dispute then turns into confinement. The Spider-Society imprisons Miles, and Miles gets out. He learns he is on Earth-42, a world where no one was bitten by the spider that gave him his powers, so it has no Spider-Man. From start to finish Miguel is the voice of the opposing view, and his case for stability drives the sequel's central conflict.

Who Are Miguel O'Hara's Key Relationships?

Miguel O'Hara's key relationships are with Miles Morales, whom he opposes; Gwen Stacy, who sides with Miles; and Miles's father Jefferson Davis, whose fate is the point of their dispute.

Miles is the teenager from Earth-1610 whom Miguel treats as a threat to the multiverse, and you can read more about him on our miles morales spider man page. Miguel's authority comes from the Spider-Society, the group he leads from Nueva York, and the canon events it enforces are the ideas he defends against Miles.

Gwen Stacy, who lives on Earth-65 as Spider-Woman, is the other half of that conflict. She reconnects with Miles and travels with him to the Spider-Society, and later she returns to Earth-1610 with allies to bring Miles home. Her side of the story is covered on our gwen stacy spider man page.

Jefferson Davis is the person Miguel's argument is really about. Miguel's demand that a certain death must happen is what turns a leadership dispute into a deeply personal one for Miles.

What Happened to Miguel O'Hara in Spider-Man?Spoilers

No released film settles Miguel O'Hara's fate, since Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stops on a cliffhanger. Spoilers follow.

His quarrel with Miles is still open when the credits roll. Miles is getting ready to break out of Earth-42, and Gwen is gathering a team of Spider-People ahead of the Spot's planned strike on Earth-1610's New York. Neither side of the Spider-Society argument wins out on screen.

The story picks up in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which Sony has dated for June 18, 2027 after moving it a week earlier, and it is in production. Our Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse page follows its progress. Until that film arrives, where Miguel ends up is unknown.

Best Miguel O'Hara Moments: Our Take

Miguel O'Hara's best moment is his argument about canon events, because it gives Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse an opponent who believes he is right. It could be argued that the film is stronger for refusing to make him a simple bully: his fear is that the multiverse will fail if Miles refuses to accept a loss.

The way the series introduced him also works well. The post credit scene in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a joke about two animated Spider-Men bickering on Earth-67, yet it sets up one of the central figures of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and it rewards viewers who stayed for the credits.

I also rate the design of his home, Nueva York. Its brutalist, minimalist look makes the city read as an extension of Miguel's personality, so the Spider-Society's hard rules feel built into the place. The escalation from those rules to Miles's imprisonment and escape turns a debate into a chase, and it makes the Earth-42 reveal land harder.
