Who Are the Spider Verse Characters?
The Spider-Verse characters are the Spider-People, allies and villains of two animated films, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman directed the first, and Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson and Joaquim Dos Santos directed the second.
Miles Morales is the lead of both films, and Gwen Stacy is the second pillar. The first film gathers Spider-People from different worlds in Miles's Brooklyn after Kingpin's collider tears open the walls between universes. The second film widens the map with the Spider-Society, a multiversal group led by Miguel O'Hara, and it adds voices such as Greta Lee as LYLA and Amandla Stenberg as Margo Kess, also known as Spider-Byte. For the wider cast across every Spider-Man film, see the spider man characters page.
Miles Morales: The Spider-Man of Earth-1610Spoilers
Miles Morales is the Spider-Man of Earth-1610, voiced by Shameik Moore in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He is a Brooklyn teenager who has just started at a new boarding school and feels out of place, though he is close to his uncle Aaron. A radioactive spider bites him in an abandoned subway tunnel, and he struggles at first to control his sticky hands.
By the end of the first film he makes his own suit, takes a leap of faith, beats Kingpin's forces and destroys the collider, and he becomes the Spider-Man of his city. In the sequel he is balancing the mask with life at home, and he clashes with Miguel O'Hara because he refuses to let his father die. The Spider-Society imprisons him, he escapes, and he learns he is on Earth-42, a world where no one was bitten by the spider that gave him his powers, so it has no Spider-Man. His parents are Jefferson Davis (credited as Jeff Morales in Across the Spider-Verse), voiced by Brian Tyree Henry, and Rio Morales, voiced by Luna Lauren Vélez. His full profile is on the miles morales spider man page.
Gwen Stacy: Spider-Woman of Earth-65Spoilers
Gwen Stacy, also called Spider-Woman or Spider-Gwen, is the Earth-65 Spider-Person voiced by Hailee Steinfeld in both Spider-Verse films. She joins Miles in the first film, and at its close she finds a way to stay in touch with him from her own dimension.
In Across the Spider-Verse she lives cut off from her friends and is hunted by her father, a police captain voiced by Shea Whigham as George Stacy, after a tragic accident involving her world's Peter Parker. She reconnects with Miles when the pair are pulled into a fight with the Spot, and later she returns to Earth-1610 with allies to bring Miles home. Her profile is on the gwen stacy spider man page, and her costumed alias has its own entry at spider-gwen.
Peter B. Parker: The Worn-Out MentorSpoilers
Peter B. Parker, voiced by Jake Johnson, is an older and worn-out Spider-Man pulled into Miles's world by Kingpin's collider. He is not the Spider-Man who dies in the tunnel in Miles's own universe: that Peter Parker is voiced by Chris Pine.
Peter B. Parker reluctantly agrees to train Miles in exchange for help using the flash drive to send him home. The pair become the emotional center of the first film, and he stays behind to hold off the enemy so the others can reach the collider. Jake Johnson reprises Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Miguel O'Hara: Leader of the Spider-SocietySpoilers
Miguel O'Hara is the Spider-Society's leader, a Spider-Man from a 2099 future with Oscar Isaac in the voice role. His name is also on the miguel o'hara spider man page.
Audiences first see him at the very end of Into the Spider-Verse. In the post-credits scene he lands on Earth-67 and trades arguments with the animated Spider-Man who lives there. That brief appearance sets up his role in Across the Spider-Verse, where he runs the multiversal group and holds that certain canon events must happen to keep realities stable.
His rule collides with Miles, who will not let his father die. Miguel treats that refusal as a threat to the whole multiverse, so he becomes the main opposing force among the heroes. The Spider-Society imprisons Miles, and Miles escapes.
Spider-Man Noir: Nicolas Cage's Spider-ManSpoilers
Spider-Man Noir is voiced by Nicolas Cage in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. He is one of the Spider-People from different worlds who join Miles and Peter B. Parker after the collider scatters them across universes.
When the collider is destroyed, Miles sends the other Spider-People back to their own worlds, which includes Spider-Man Noir. His part in the story belongs to the first film's team-up.
Peni Parker: Kimiko Glenn's Spider-PersonSpoilers
Peni Parker is voiced by Kimiko Glenn in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and she is one of the Spider-People Miles meets after the collider tears universes open. She is part of the group that includes Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Ham.
Once the collider is destroyed, Miles sends her back to her own world along with the others.
Spider-Ham: John Mulaney's Spider-PersonSpoilers
Spider-Ham is voiced by John Mulaney in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and he is the member of the Spider-People team who comes from the most cartoon-like world. He joins Miles after the collider opens the way between universes.
In the same way as Spider-Man Noir and Peni Parker, he returns to his own world when the collider falls.
Hobie Brown: Daniel Kaluuya's Spider-Person
Hobie Brown is a Spider-Person voiced by Daniel Kaluuya in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He is one of the new Spider-People of the sequel, which expands the multiverse beyond the first film's team.
The film's plot centers on Miles, Gwen, Miguel and the Spot, so Hobie sits in the wider ensemble of the Spider-Society storyline.
Pavitr Prabhakar: Karan Soni's Spider-Man
Pavitr Prabhakar is a Spider-Man voiced by Karan Soni in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He is another of the new Spider-People who populate the Spider-Society in the sequel.
Like Hobie Brown, he widens the sense of how many worlds have their own Spider-Man. For a character list, he is one of the names that the second film adds to the first film's roster.
Jessica Drew: Issa Rae's Spider-Woman
Jessica Drew is a Spider-Woman voiced by Issa Rae in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. She is part of the Spider-Society storyline that Miguel O'Hara leads.
She arrives in a sequel that also brings in Hobie Brown and Pavitr Prabhakar among its new Spider-People, which shows how far the second film pushes the cast beyond the first film's six Spider-People.
The Spot: The Villain Who Moves Between UniversesSpoilers
The Spot, played by Jason Schwartzman, is the chief antagonist of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and a scientist who became a villain. What sets him apart is that he can cross from one universe to another.
He drags Gwen and Miles into a clash near the start of the sequel, and following him sends the pair through several dimensions until they reach the Spider-Society. The story never closes his arc. It stops on a cliffhanger, with Miles getting ready to break out of Earth-42 and Gwen joining a team of Spider-People who brace for the attack the Spot has planned on Earth-1610's New York.
Kingpin (Wilson Fisk): The Villain Behind the ColliderSpoilers
Wilson Fisk, known as Kingpin, is the main villain of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, voiced by Liev Schreiber. His huge collider tears open the walls between universes, which is how Peter B. Parker, Gwen Stacy and the other Spider-People reach Miles's world.
In the tunnel, Kingpin kills the Spider-Man of Miles's universe, voiced by Chris Pine. At the end Miles destroys the collider with Kingpin caught in the blast, which closes the villain's story in the first film.
Prowler and Uncle Aaron: Mahershala Ali's Double RoleSpoilers
The Prowler is Uncle Aaron, Miles's uncle, voiced by Mahershala Ali in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Miles later finds out that Aaron is secretly the Prowler and works for Wilson Fisk / Kingpin.
Aaron is killed, and Miles loses confidence and pulls away from the group. Mahershala Ali is credited again in Across the Spider-Verse, which keeps the character's shadow over Miles in the sequel.
Doc Ock: Kathryn Hahn's Villain
Doc Ock is a villain in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, voiced by Kathryn Hahn. She is one of the antagonists on Kingpin's side.
For the villain count, the first film gives Wilson Fisk / Kingpin, the Prowler and Doc Ock, while the second film brings the Spot. Together they are the main villains of the Spider-Verse character list.
Spider Verse Characters Explained: Is Miles Stronger Than Peter?Spoilers
No film ranks Miles Morales against Peter B. Parker, so neither is officially stronger. Peter B. Parker trains Miles, and Miles ends the first film by beating Kingpin's forces and destroying the collider after Peter B. Parker holds off the enemy so the others can reach it.
My view is that choices are a better measure than strength. Miles's strongest act is refusing to let his father die, which is a choice rather than a power. Miguel O'Hara argues that canon events must happen, and Miles will not accept it, which makes that refusal the strongest thing any character does across both films.
The roster reads cleanly as a saga. The first film is Miles, Peter B. Parker and a team of Spider-People who return home. The second is Gwen, Miguel and the Spider-Society with a host of new voices. You can read the films at spiderman into the spiderverse and spiderman across the spiderverse, and follow the next one on the spider-man beyond the spider-verse page.
