Star Wars has earned $10.76 billion worldwide across 13 theatrical films, made up of nine main saga films and four spinoffs, as of November 2, 2026. The nine main saga films account for $8.90 billion of that total, and the four spinoffs account for $1.87 billion. All figures are unadjusted for inflation.
The highest grossing film is Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), directed by J.J. Abrams, with $2.07 billion worldwide according to Box Office Mojo (The Numbers rounds its slightly lower figure to $2.06 billion): $937 million domestic and $1.13 billion international, on a $245 million budget. Behind it come Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), directed by Rian Johnson, at $1.33 billion, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), directed by J.J. Abrams, at $1.08 billion. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), directed by Gareth Edwards, reached $1.06 billion, and Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999), directed by George Lucas, reached $1.05 billion. Those five are the only films that grossed more than a billion dollars.

George Lucas directed four of these films: the 1977 film, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Together they earned $3.38 billion worldwide. Disney released its first Star Wars film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in 2015, and the 2015 to 2026 films earned a combined $6.28 billion worldwide. For the order of release, see star wars movies in order, and for the full film list, see how many star wars movies are there.
The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), directed by Jon Favreau, has earned $346 million worldwide against a $165 million budget. It was released on May 22, 2026 in the US, and its totals follow The Numbers because Box Office Mojo reports a slightly different international figure. The next release is Star Wars: Starfighter, dated May 28, 2027 in the US, and it is in production.
Star Wars Box Office Analysis: What Each Era Earned
The original trilogy earned $1.81 billion worldwide, the prequels earned $2.61 billion and the sequel trilogy earned $4.48 billion. In my opinion, the clearest way to read the franchise is by trilogy, because the budgets tell a different story for each one: $11 million, $18 million and $32.5 million for the originals, $115 million, $115 million and $113 million for the prequels, and $245 million, $317 million and $275 million for the sequels. So, the sequels brought in the most money, and the 1977 film remains the most efficient, since $11 million became $775 million.
Each sequel trilogy film earned less worldwide than the one before it, and the gaps are large. Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned more than $2 billion, Star Wars: The Last Jedi earned $1.33 billion, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker earned $1.08 billion. It could be argued that a record setting opener makes every follow up look weaker, and The Rise of Skywalker still opened to $175.5 million domestic and $373.5 million worldwide, according to TheWrap.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the result I find most interesting. Paradoxically, a standalone story with new leads (Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso and Diego Luna as Cassian Andor) out-earned Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, finishing at $1.06 billion against $1.05 billion, and it beat both Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and the whole original trilogy film by film. The Phantom Menace was a numbered saga entry with a returning franchise name, so Rogue One passing it says something about demand for the setting itself.
Solo: A Star Wars Story and The Mandalorian and Grogu sit at the other end of the live action spinoffs. Solo earned $393 million on a $275 million budget in Box Office Mojo's data, although The Numbers lists a different production budget of $330.4 million, so the margin depends on which source you trust. The directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller left the production, as CBS News reported on June 20, 2017, and Ron Howard directed the finished film. The Mandalorian and Grogu earned $346 million on $165 million, which is a smaller gross than Solo but a better ratio to budget. I would place both as modest results by this franchise's standards, and that is an opinion, not a measurement.
These figures are unadjusted for inflation, so a 1977 ticket and a 2015 ticket are not directly comparable. If you want to see where each of these films can be watched today, start with where to watch star wars.
