The highest grossing Conjuring movie is The Conjuring: Last Rites at $499 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, on a $55 million budget reported by The Numbers. The original The Conjuring (2013), directed by James Wan, took $321 million from a $20 million budget. The Conjuring 2 (2016), also directed by Wan, edged it with $323 million on $40 million. That gap is only about $1.5 million, so the two films are close to level on gross, although the sequel cost twice as much to make.

Among the spin-offs, The Nun (2018), directed by Corin Hardy, leads with $366 million on a $22 million budget. Annabelle: Creation (2017), directed by David F. Sandberg, follows with $307 million. Annabelle (2014), directed by John R. Leonetti, took $258 million from a $6.5 million budget, the smallest in the series. The Nun II (2023) made $270 million, Annabelle Comes Home (2019), directed by Gary Dauberman, made $231 million, and The Curse of La Llorona (2019), directed by Michael Chaves, made $123 million, the lowest gross in the series. Box Office Mojo lists a $30 million budget for Annabelle Comes Home while The Numbers lists $27 million, and the figures here use the higher one.

Overseas audiences carry most of the money. Added together, the ten films earned about $1.0 billion in the domestic market, which is roughly a third of the worldwide total, so about two thirds came from international markets. The four main films total about $1.35 billion worldwide and the six spin-offs about $1.55 billion, which means the spin-offs hold the larger share overall, though there are more of them. Budgets across the ten films add up to $275.5 million.

Hit or Flop? What the Conjuring Budgets and Grosses Say

By grosses alone, no Conjuring film was a flop, because the weakest return in the series is still more than five times a production budget. A gross is not a profit, since marketing costs and theater splits come out of it, but multiples this large leave a lot of room. The films are sold on cases the Warrens claimed to have investigated, such as the 1977 Enfield haunting in The Conjuring 2, and the receipts measure how well those stories play as horror, not whether the claims are true.

Was The Conjuring (2013) a hit or a flop? It was a hit: a $20 million film about the Perron family farmhouse in Rhode Island grossed $321 million, a return of roughly 16 times its budget. TheWrap described it as one of the most profitable movies of its summer. The sequel kept the gross level while the budget doubled, so in my opinion the first film remains the better business, at about 16 times its cost against about 8 for The Conjuring 2.

Was The Conjuring: Last Rites a success? By the numbers, yes. It is the highest grossing film in the series and also the most expensive at $55 million, and it returned about nine times its budget. It also reversed the dip of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), directed by Michael Chaves, which grossed $206 million on a $40 million budget. That is the lowest worldwide total of any main film, and about five times its cost, the weakest multiple of the ten.

In my opinion, the sharpest result is Annabelle (2014), which turned $6.5 million into $258 million, about 40 times its budget and the best multiple in the series. It could be argued that a haunted doll is the cheapest monster in horror, since it needs one prop and a dark nursery rather than a creature build, and the money suggests audiences were happy to pay for that. The Nun (2018) points the other way. The demon nun played by Bonnie Aarons in The Conjuring 2 and The Nun (2018) carried a film to $366 million, the best spin-off gross, which suggests, perhaps, that a well designed creature can carry a spin-off. The Curse of La Llorona shows the limit: at $123 million it is the smallest gross, though on a $9 million budget it still returned about 14 times its cost.

The next entry is The Conjuring: First Communion, directed by Rodrigue Huart, which TheWrap reports Warner Bros. has dated for September 10, 2027, with production reported as under way. For status, cast and date changes, see conjuring first communion, and for how each film stacks up as a film rather than a business, see conjuring movies ranked.
