Four films in The Conjuring Universe feature songs alongside their scores: The Conjuring (2013), The Conjuring 2 (2016), Annabelle: Creation (2017) and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021). The other six films use only the original score by Joseph Bishara, Abel Korzeniowski, Marco Beltrami or Benjamin Wallfisch.
The Conjuring (2013), directed by James Wan and set in 1971, features three songs: "Time of the Season" by The Zombies, "In the Room Where You Sleep" by Dead Man's Bones and "Sleep Walk" by Betsy Brye. The 1960s rock of "Time of the Season" suits a film that opens in the early seventies.
The Conjuring 2 (2016), also directed by Wan, is set in Enfield, north London, in 1977. It features "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Elvis Presley, "London Calling" by The Clash and "I Started a Joke" by Bee Gees. In "Can't Help Falling in Love", Ed Warren, played by Patrick Wilson, performs the song on guitar in the film, so it plays as a moment on screen rather than background sound.
Annabelle: Creation (2017), directed by David F. Sandberg, is set mostly in 1955 on the Mullins farmhouse. It features "You Are My Sunshine" by Charles McDonald, a gentle tune that sits oddly against the grief of the Mullins family.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), directed by Michael Chaves and set in 1981 in Connecticut, has the longest list of songs in the set: "Baby Hold On to Me" by Eddie Money, "Call Me" by Blondie, "Suspicious Minds" by Elvis Presley and "Brand New Day" by Van Morrison.
Our picks: the best songs in the The Conjuring Universe films (opinion)
- "Can't Help Falling in Love" (The Conjuring 2): In my opinion, Ed Warren's guitar performance gives the film a human moment amid all the haunting, which makes it the strongest pick here.
- "London Calling" (The Conjuring 2): It fits the London setting of the Enfield story better than any other track on this list.
- "Time of the Season" (The Conjuring, 2013): A 1960s track that suits the 1971 setting, and the easiest of the three to remember.
- "In the Room Where You Sleep" (The Conjuring, 2013): The title alone suits a haunted house film, and it is the most on theme of the three.
- "Suspicious Minds" (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It): A second Presley song in the series, and a good fit for a story about a man who is not himself.
- "Call Me" (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It): The most upbeat entry in the franchise, which makes it a useful break from the dread.
- "You Are My Sunshine" (Annabelle: Creation): A gentle, familiar tune that sits oddly against the grief in the Mullins farmhouse.
