Hagrid (Rubeus Hagrid): Actor, Story and Fate
Hagrid, credited as Rubeus Hagrid, is the giant who tells Harry Potter he is a wizard in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001), directed by Chris Columbus. Robbie Coltrane is credited as Hagrid in seven of the eight Harry Potter films. The HBO series is a separate adaptation, which is why people search for a second Hagrid actor.
Who Plays Rubeus Hagrid?
Who Is Hagrid in the Harry Potter Films?
He is the giant who rescues Harry Potter from the Dursleys and introduces him to the wizarding world. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001), directed by Chris Columbus, he arrives on Harry's eleventh birthday, tells him he is a wizard, and explains that he is famous for surviving an attack by Voldemort as a baby. He then takes Harry shopping in a hidden London street, where Harry gets his wand and supplies, before the Hogwarts Express carries him to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The credits use the names Rubeus Hagrid and Hagrid. Robbie Coltrane played the character and is credited in seven of the eight Harry Potter films, billed seventh in the first film and fourth in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Dumbledore is the headmaster, while the giant is the person who actually turns up at Harry's door.
Is he good or evil? He is good. The films place him on Harry's side from his first scene, and the one time he is accused of wrongdoing, in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the accusation turns out to be false. That makes him a far plainer case than Snape.

Hagrid's Story Across the Harry Potter FilmsSpoilers
The character's story in the films runs from guide in the first film, to scapegoat in the second, to a recurring ally who stays credited through the final instalment. He first appears in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, where his job is to open the door to the wizarding world and then step back while Harry, Ron and Hermione take over the plot.
The second film gives him his biggest problem. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the enchanted diary that belonged to Tom Riddle shows him being blamed for the Chamber being opened fifty years earlier. He is taken to Azkaban, Dumbledore is forced out as headmaster, and a clue from him leads Harry and Ron to the spider Aragog, who clears his name and hints at a basilisk. Once the monster is dead and Dumbledore returns, he is released.
After that, he appears as part of the world around Harry rather than the engine of the story. Cast lists place Coltrane in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 does not list him among its fifteen top billed cast, so the credited run is seven of the eight films. He returns in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, where he is billed thirteenth. The three Fantastic Beasts spin-offs do not list him among their main cast.
Hagrid's Relationships: Harry, Dumbledore and Aragog
His closest bond is with Harry, and the films set it up in a single scene: the giant who knocks on the door is the first person to tell Harry the truth about himself. That makes him closer to a guardian than a teacher, even though he never takes on the role formally. Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger join the same circle in the first film, and the second film shows what that loyalty is worth when Harry and Ron follow his clue to Aragog to clear his name.
His other notable relationship is with creatures, and the films treat it as a character trait as much as a hobby. In Chamber of Secrets, the clue that sends Harry and Ron to Aragog is his own, so his willingness to befriend frightening animals is what helps clear him. The spider is a dangerous acquaintance, yet the film uses him to show that the giant is not the one behind the attacks.
Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts. When he is forced out in the second film, his gamekeeper friend is taken to Azkaban in the same stretch of the story, and both return once the Chamber is resolved. Does Hagrid Die in the Harry Potter Movies?Spoilers
He does not die in the Harry Potter film plots; the clearest threat to him on screen is his arrest in Chamber of Secrets. He is taken to Azkaban for a crime he did not commit, and he is released after Harry exposes Lucius Malfoy and Dumbledore returns as headmaster.
The plots of the later films record the deaths of Cedric Diggory, Sirius Black, Dumbledore, Dobby, Snape and Voldemort, and none of them mentions this character. Coltrane remains credited as Rubeus Hagrid in Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which closes with a jump of nineteen years to King's Cross station.
If your question is about the actor rather than the character, the two are separate matters. The HBO series, reported for December 25, 2026, is a separate adaptation from the films. The Harry Potter TV series page covers it, and the new Harry Potter movie page explains why the series, and not a film, is the focus right now.
Best Hagrid Moments: Where He Matters Most
In my opinion, the strongest moments are the two where the film trusts him with a story rather than a cameo: his arrival in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and his arrest in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The first is the better introduction. Columbus has him deliver three pieces of news in a row (you are a wizard, you are famous, here is where you shop), and Coltrane plays it as a kindly man rather than a lecturer. It could be argued that the series never again sells its own premise as warmly, and that warmth is largely his doing.
The second is the more telling one. Being sent to Azkaban is the point where he stops being a helper and becomes the person the plot is about. It shows how quickly the wizarding world is willing to blame him, and how readily Harry, Ron and Hermione stand by him. The Aragog sequence that follows is the one scene where his affection for dangerous creatures pays off in the plot.

FAQs
Who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies?
Robbie Coltrane played the role in the Harry Potter films. He is credited as Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, billed seventh, and as Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, seven of the eight films.
Why are there two Hagrid actors?
The second actor belongs to a different adaptation. Coltrane played the giant in the films, while the HBO series, reported for a December 25, 2026 premiere, is a separate production of the story. The series is covered on the Harry Potter TV series page.
When did Hagrid pass away?
The character does not die in the film plots. He is arrested and released in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Coltrane is credited as Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Any question about the actor is a separate matter from the character's story.
Is Hagrid good or evil?
He is good. He rescues Harry from the Dursleys, takes him to buy his wand, and is wrongly blamed for the Chamber of Secrets being opened. Aragog clears his name in the second film.
Why is Hagrid so loved?
The films make him the first kind adult Harry meets, and that first impression holds. He tells Harry the truth in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and he is treated unjustly in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which gives audiences reason to side with him.
