Shira in Ice Age: Who She Is, Who Voices Her and What Happens to Her

Shira is a saber-toothed cat in the Ice Age films, voiced by Jennifer Lopez. She debuts in ice age continental drift (2012), directed by Michael Thurmeier and Steve Martino, as the first mate to Captain Gutt, the pirate ape voiced by Peter Dinklage. She is introduced as the sabre-toothed first mate of the ape Captain Gutt, and her first job is to deal with a group of captives: Manny, Sid, Diego and Granny, who have washed up on the pirates' path aboard a drifting slab of ice.

Why does she change sides? The story gives her time with Diego, and that closeness is what pulls her away from Gutt. When the heroes free the enslaved hyraxes and take a ship, Shira stays behind to slow the crew down. That choice is the point where she stops being the captain's officer and starts acting for the herd.

After Gutt is eaten by a siren, she is no longer bound to anyone, and she arrives on the green island where the hyraxes start rebuilding. There she joins the herd as Diego's partner.

Collision Course gives her no separate mission. She is already part of the group sheltering in the cave while meteors fall, and she is one of the animals who help the Geotopians and the herd refill a volcano with crystals to push the asteroid away. Her arc closes at Peaches and Julian's wedding, where the local kids celebrate her and Diego.

Yes, Shira is Diego's partner, and by the end of Continental Drift the story presents them as a couple. Their connection starts on the pirate ship, where she is meant to deal with him and instead grows close to him, and it becomes a romance once she joins the herd on the island.

Her relationship with Captain Gutt runs the other way: he is her commander, and she stops following his orders when the herd needs her.

With the rest of the herd, the bond is newer. manny ice age and sid ice age first met her as an enemy, and she is still welcomed onto the island. That echoes Diego's own history in Ice Age (2002), where he began as a predator sent to deliver a baby to his pack before he turned on his leader and joined Manny and Sid.

Shira survives both films she appears in and ends Ice Age: Collision Course as part of the herd, together with Diego. At the end of that film, Peaches and Julian are married, and Diego and Shira are celebrated by the local kids at the wedding. The herd is together and settled, so there is no death, separation or exile in her story so far.

Did Diego marry Shira? No wedding between them is shown. The wedding in Collision Course is Peaches and Julian's, and Diego and Shira are honored guests. Do they have a baby? Neither film gives them one.

In my opinion, Shira's best moment is the one where she stays behind to slow the pirates down, because it is where her loyalty visibly changes and it costs her something. It is also the clearest case of the film showing, rather than explaining, why the herd can trust her.

The second is her arrival with the herd on the green island at the end of Continental Drift. After a film as the enemy's first mate, she is given a place in the herd, and the film does not make her earn it a second time. That restraint suits the saga's habit of folding former rivals into the family.

The third is the quiet one in Collision Course, when Diego and Shira are celebrated by the local kids at the wedding. It is a short beat in a busy film, but it shows that she now belongs to the herd's story as much as Diego does.

It could be argued that her arc is a smaller echo of Diego's in Ice Age (2002), who also begins on the wrong side of the fight and changes course by choice.
