Ice Age Characters: Who Is Who in the Herd

The Ice Age characters are a herd that keeps growing: a core trio of Manny, Sid and Diego, the family and friends who join them, and a fresh set of villains and dinosaurs in almost every film. The series runs to six films, five theatrical releases and the Disney+ spinoff The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, and all six carry a PG rating in the US, according to TMDB. In the theatrical run the three leads are voiced by Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary.

The main characters in Ice Age are Manny, Sid and Diego, the mammoth, the sloth and the sabertooth who become a herd in Ice Age (2002), directed by Chris Wedge. Manny, voiced by Ray Romano, is a grumpy woolly mammoth who is heading against the migration when he grudgingly saves Sid, and in an ice cave full of human paintings he relives the loss of his own family. Sid, voiced by John Leguizamo, is a clumsy and talkative ground sloth abandoned by his own group, and his longing for a family drives Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009), directed by Carlos Saldanha, when he adopts three large eggs. Diego, voiced by Denis Leary, starts as the sabertooth lieutenant sent by Soto (Goran Višnjić) to snatch a human baby, then fights his own leader to save Manny and is badly wounded for it.

In The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild the trio are voiced by Sean Kenin (Manny), Jake Green (Sid) and Skyler Stone (Diego), because Simon Pegg is the only returning voice actor.

Ellie is the mammoth Manny falls for in Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006), directed by Carlos Saldanha, after he has already lost the family he had before the series began. Ellie, voiced by Queen Latifah, was an orphaned calf adopted by a possum mother and believes she is a possum herself. Manny is quietly afraid he is the last mammoth alive, so he hesitates, and he only chooses to stay with her once a herd of other mammoths appears through the cracked glacier. The films present Ellie as the partner Manny chooses after the loss of his first family, and together they have Peaches. The wedding the series stages is their daughter's, not theirs.

Crash and Eddie are the possum brothers whose mother adopted Ellie as an orphaned calf, introduced in The Meltdown and voiced by Seann William Scott (Crash) and Josh Peck (Eddie). They travel with the herd from that film on, follow Sid into the lost jungle in Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and finally get their own story in Buck Wild, where they cause an avalanche that wrecks the herd's summer home. Crash and Eddie leave camp to prove they can look after themselves, with Vincent Tong and Aaron Harris taking over the voices, and they end the film by choosing to live in the Lost World.

Peaches is the daughter of Manny and Ellie, born at the end of Dawn of the Dinosaurs and grown into a teenage mammoth by Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012), directed by Steve Martino and Michael Thurmeier. Peaches, voiced by Keke Palmer, wants to fit in with a group of cooler young mammoths, then realizes they are shallow and makes up with Louis (Josh Gad), the friend who had always been loyal to her. By Ice Age: Collision Course (2016), directed by Michael Thurmeier, she is engaged to Julian (Adam Devine), and the film closes at their wedding.

The girls and women of Ice Age are Ellie, Peaches, Shira, Granny, Brooke, Zee and Scratte, spread across the films from The Meltdown onward. Shira, voiced by Jennifer Lopez, is a sabertooth who serves as Captain Gutt's first mate in Continental Drift, grows close to Diego, and joins the herd as his partner. Granny, voiced by Wanda Sykes, is Sid's Granny, and she brings a sea monster named Precious that helps drive off the pirates. Scratte, voiced by Karen Disher, appears in Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Brooke belongs to Collision Course and Zee to The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild.

Brooke is a Geotopian in Collision Course, voiced by Jessie J, and she is the character who persuades her people to help the herd even after Sid, by mistake, destroys the city's crystals and the residents begin to age. Geotopia is a hidden city whose residents depend on those crystals to stay young. Brooke is reunited with Sid at the wedding of Peaches and Julian, after a crystal shard falling into a hot spring restores her people's youth.

Zee is the character Crash and Eddie team up with in Buck Wild, voiced by Justina Machado and credited in TMDB as "Zee (or whatever her name is)". She joins the brothers and a Tyrannosaurus called Momma to take on Orson, a small Protoceratops voiced by Utkarsh Ambudkar, who was once banished for his ambitions and returns with a pack of raptors. The brothers win by using fire breathing lizards to turn the raptors against him. The film also works as a pilot for the Buck Wild series.

Buck is a daring one eyed weasel who first appears in Dawn of the Dinosaurs, voiced by Simon Pegg, and he is the guide to the dinosaur world beneath the ice. Buck is locked in a feud with Rudy, a huge albino dinosaur, and when Rudy survives a fall from a cliff Buck chooses to stay below and seal off the lost world instead of going home with the herd. The other dinosaurs are the three baby Tyrannosaurs that hatch from Sid's eggs and their enormous mother, Gavin and his family of flying dinosaurs in Collision Course (Nick Offerman voices Gavin), and the raptors and Momma of Buck Wild. Scrat is the acorn chasing creature who sits outside the herd and starts the disaster in most films, voiced by Chris Wedge in The Meltdown and Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Scrat pokes the hole in the glacier wall that drains the flood in The Meltdown, tears the land apart in Continental Drift, and sets asteroids on course for Earth in Collision Course. He also finds the lost city of Scratlantis, which sinks and leaves him stranded in a desert. Scratte, voiced by Karen Disher, joins him in Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

The villains change with each film: Soto and his sabertooth pack in Ice Age (2002), the sea reptiles in The Meltdown, Rudy in Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Captain Gutt in Continental Drift, Gavin in Collision Course and Orson in Buck Wild. Captain Gutt is an ape pirate voiced by Peter Dinklage. The humans matter most in Ice Age (2002), where the baby's mother flees over a waterfall and leaves the child with Manny and Sid, and the baby's father later thanks Manny with a shell and bead necklace. Soto wanted revenge on the humans who hunted his pack, which is why he sent Diego after the baby.

The returning characters in Ice Age: Boiling Point have not been confirmed. The film is in production with a US release date of February 5, 2027, according to TheWrap.
